Licht und Sicht boten keinen Grund zur Klage, die einzigartige Atmosphäre sorgte für ungewohnten Zuschauerandrang im freien Training zum Großen Preis von Singapur, dem 50. GP des BMW Sauber F1 Teams.

„Das Training war eine Prüfung, wie erwartet – nicht nur für die Fahrer, sondern auch für die Autos. Man ist pausenlos in Kurven, und der Belag ist sehr uneben, an zwei, drei Stellen ist das extrem. Es ist sehr wichtig, dass das Auto eine stabile Straßenlage hat, weil man in einigen Ecken sonst zu viel Zeit verliert. Ich habe mir den Kurs in der ersten Runde eingeprägt, und weil ich auch schnell war, konnten wir gleich mit der Abstimmungsarbeit beginnen. Im zweiten Training haben wir den Reifenvergleich erledigt. Jetzt werden wir analysieren, was wir für Samstag noch verbessern können.”

„Mein Trainingstag hier lief insgesamt gut, auch wenn meine schnellste Runde aus der zweiten Session das nicht vermuten lässt. Die Strecke hier macht sehr viel Spaß. Sie ist viel mehr Stadtkurs als die neue Strecke in Valencia und auch herausfordernder. Hier ist alles deutlich enger. Als ich die Strecke Mittwochnacht abgelaufen bin, kamen mir die Geraden noch relativ lang vor, aber im Formel-1-Tempo ist das natürlich anders. An die künstliche Beleuchtung gewöhnt man sich sehr schnell, nach ein, zwei Runden hat man das vergessen, obwohl die Helligkeit nicht überall genau gleich ist. Ein Thema sind die Bodenwellen, davon gibt es eine ganze Menge. Mit dem Rhythmus, die Nacht zum Tage zu machen, habe ich kein Problem. Ich bleibe einfach lange auf und schlafe dann bis mittags, um in den späten Abendstunden fit zu sein.“

„Das war ein gelungener Auftakt in das wohl ungewöhnlichste Rennwochenende des Jahres. Das Ambiente hier ist phantastisch, die Stimmung einzigartig. Beide Fahrer haben nur ein paar Runden gebraucht, um sich auf die neue Strecke einzustellen. Nach dieser kurzen Eingewöhnungsphase haben wir uns wie sonst auch auf die Rennvorbereitungen konzentriert. Wir haben einige Änderungen an der Fahrzeugabstimmung durchgeführt und werden die Daten heute Nacht noch analysieren.“

Singapore Grand Prix, Friday

The ING Renault F1 Team began its preparations for this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix today as Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet completed their free practice programmes on the Marina Bay street circuit.

Sunday’s race will be the first Grand Prix to be staged at night and so today’s two free practice sessions were held in the evening to give the drivers their first taste of driving under the artificial lighting.

Weather conditions were ideal for both sessions, allowing the team to get straight down to learning the track and dialling the car into the circuit. Along with set-up work, the team also completed its usual evaluation of the two compounds of Bridgestone tyres in preparation for qualifying and the race.

Both drivers were competitive during the day, with Fernando topping the time sheets during the second session. Having collected some valuable information the team now looks forward to a strong qualifying session tomorrow.

“The first day of work has gone well. The circuit is interesting, very bumpy in places, especially into turn number 7, and we have to keep an eye on that because it can become a problem. In terms of the lighting, when I walked the track I was impressed, but behind the wheel at 300 km/h some parts of the track are a bit dark. But despite that, this is an amazing opportunity for the spectators to attend a night race and I am satisfied with my day.”

“It was an interesting experience to drive today during the night and the organisers have done a remarkable job to make this possible. The behaviour of the car felt good and it reacted well to the different set-up options that we tried. However, we still have a bit of work to do ahead of qualifying tomorrow, but the first signs are encouraging.”

“It is always exciting to come to a new track and the spectacle in Singapore is even better than I imagined. It is a really exciting new era for Formula 1 and I’d like to congratulate all of those who make it possible. The circuit itself is almost as we expected, although much bumpier than what we have experienced before. It reminds me of the North American circuits in the 1980’s. Having said that, our cars and drivers seemed to be pretty competitive this evening. Let’s see what tomorrow brings us.”

“Our first day has gone smoothly, which proves that we were well prepared coming here. "Beide Trainingssitzungen waren heute schwer für mich. Die Strecke
ist recht holprig und das Auto ist momentan wirklich schwierig zu
fahren. Das Fahren unter dem Flutlicht war eine neue Erfahrung, die
gesamte Strecke hat etwas Ungewöhnliches. Gegen Ende des zweiten
Trainings ist mir das Auto einfach aus der Hand gerutscht, als ich
einen Randstein traf, und das war es dann, ich geriet an die
Barriere. Das hat unser Programm aber nicht beeinflusst und
insgesamt haben wir heute viel geschafft, so gesehen war es also ein
erfolgreicher Tag für uns. Bislang bin ich mit dem Auto noch nicht
ganz zufrieden und es gibt noch viel zu verbessern. Ich setzte mich
aber noch mit den Ingenieuren zusammen und bin sicher, dass wir bis
zum Qualifying Fortschritte machen. Dann müssen wir sehen, wie es
morgen läuft. "

Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore Bridgestone Motorsport’s Friday Update

Lewis Hamilton (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) set the marker on the opening night of running for the Singtel Singapore Grand Prix by using Bridgestone’s soft compound Potenza tyre to set Friday’s fastest lap time at the 5.07km Marina Bay Street Circuit, as Formula One cars ran at night for the first time at the fifteenth round of the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship. Hamilton set his time – a 1min 45.518secs – in the first of the two 90-minute practice sessions, both of which took place after sunset and under artificial lights. Hamilton was eight hundredths of a second faster than next quickest, Felipe Massa (Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro). Raikkonen went third fastest. In the later practice session, ING Renault F1 Team driver Fernando Alonso set the quickest time, using the super soft compound to set a time of 1min 45.654secs. Alonso was almost a tenth quicker than Hamilton, who also set his fastest time using the super soft in this session.

Massa went third fastest. Today was the first time that Formula One cars used the new Marina Bay Street Circuit, and the first time F1 cars have run at night to practice for a Grand Prix. Hirohide Hamashima – Director of Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development, said: “The Marina Bay Street Circuit is certainly an interesting and challenging track for Bridgestone and all the competitors on our tyres. This evening the circuit started very dirty, as we would expect from a new facility, especially a street course. The grip level from the track improved rapidly through the first session, however, the fastest time seen today was some way off our predictions. Normally we would see an improvement in lap times in the second session and from the softer compound tyre but we did not see this today. This is perhaps because there is still not sufficient rubber laid down on the track and also due to team strategies in the session as they learnt this new track.

The soft tyre worked well with conditions as they were today. The first ever 24 hour race in Africa: …Le 24H DAKAR 2009!

Are you ready for a new adventurous challenge?

A new race, a new continent, a new culture, a new challenge and a new adventure: Le 24H Dakar 2009.
On 20, 21 and 22 February 2009 the first 24-hour race for touring and GT-cars in the rich history of Africa will take place in Dakar. The race will be held on the new 4,7 km long circuit: “Le Circuit de Dakar – Baobabs” in Senegal. The circuit opened in June 2008 with a 6-hour race in the presence of the six time Le Mans champion Jacky Ickx.

This new circuit is situated approximately 80 kms south of Dakar, and is FIA grade 3 approved. The track-width varies between 12 and 15 meters and the track has 21 challenging bends and corners.

Start field

The regulations are equal to the fourth edition of the TOYO TIRES 24H of Dubai in January 2009. This means that Touring, GT cars and Silhouette cars with a maximum of 4000cc and 6 cylinders are allowed. For cars above 4000 cc and / or with more than 6 cylinders there is a special class with a minimum weight / power ratio of 3,7 kg/hp. Many enthusiastic amateur teams and (semi) professional teams from all over the world will take part in this race, and don’t forget the local teams! There will be a great international field with cars like Porsche, BMW, Seat, Renault, Alfa Romeo, Volkswagen, Mazda, Nissan, Ford, Austin Martin, Lotus and other brands.

Referring to the success of the TOYO TIRES 24H Dubai, which again takes place in January 2009, and the ingredients Dakar has to offer, Le 24h Dakar is set to be a big succes. Transport of your race car and equipment

Creventic arranges transport of your race car and equipment (2 pallets per car) to Dakar. This will happen by seafreight in 40ft containers. Standard transport from Rotterdam (The Netherlands) to Dakar and back again is included in the entryfee. We can also arrange transport from any other port to Dakar. For the teams who are participating in the TOYO TIRES 24H Dubai, the containers will go directly from Dubai to Dakar, where the teams have the possibility to prepare their car for the next race “Le 24H Dakar”.

Doppeleinsatz in den belgischen Ardennen

Für die "Francorchampagne", es standen zwei Rennen à 90’ der Belgian Touring Cars Series in Spa-Francorchamps auf dem Plan, hatte DUWO-Racing seine zwei BMW eingeschrieben. Während der M3 E46 von Jean-Marie Dumont und seinem französischen Partner Fréderic Schmit gesteuert wurde, war im BMW Serie 1 das deutsch-französische Duo Uli Baumert-Nicolas Schmit am Werk.

Von Startplatz 25 ging Dumont ins Rennen und lag schon nach der ersten Runde auf Rang 18, Nicolas Schmit bekleidete die 36. Position. Gleich zu Beginn gab es zwei Safety-Car Phasen denen der Luxemburger Rundstreckenmeister 2008 zum Opfer fiel. Auf dem Asphalt herumliegende Carbonsplitter hatten sich in seinen rechten Vorderradreifen gebohrt und mit einem schleichenden Plattfuss musste er seine Box aufsuchen. Die verlorene Zeit konnte nicht mehr aufgenommen werden und Dumont-Schmit mussten sich mit dem 24. Schlussrang zufrieden geben. Der Serie 1 drehte nur während vier Runden; in "Les Combes" rutschte der BMW über die Vorderräder, dann brach das Heck aus und Nicolas Schmit strandete neben der Piste. Die verbogene Auspussanlage konnte vor Ort nicht gerichtet werden, so dass DUWO-Racing das Fahrzeug vorzeitig aus der Veranstaltung zurückzog.

Auch im zweiten Rennen gab es gleich am Anfang eine Safety-Car Phase und im Durcheinander der Boxenbesuche waren Dumont-Fred Schmit auf Platz neun nach vorne gespült worden. Allerdings beklagte das luxemburgisch-französische Doppel mangelnde Leistung an ihrem Auto, immer wieder schaltete der Motor sich frühzeitig ins „security mode“, und fuhr am Ende auf Platz zwölf ins Ziel.
