"Ich bin mit meiner Leistung recht zufrieden. Ich habe keine Fehler
gemacht und der vierte Platz ist ein gutes Resultat. Bei diesen
Bedingungen war das Rennen ziemlich hart, denn auf einer so
holprigen Strecke ist es im Auto nicht gerade komfortabel. Ich bin
sicher, dass wir die Nachwirkungen morgen noch spüren werden. Mein
Ziel zu Beginn des Jahres war, in dieser Saison 20 Punkte zu holen.
Ich bin sehr zufrieden, dies schon vor den letzten drei Rennen
erreicht zu haben. Ich kämpfe aber für das Team, um ihm zu helfen,
den vierten Platz in der Konstrukteurswertung zu holen. Heute ist
das für uns etwas unglücklich verlaufen, aber Glückwünsche an
Fernando, der einen tollen Job geleistet hat. Jetzt geht es zum Fuji
und wir wollen dort den verlorenen Boden wieder gutmachen."

Singapore Grand Prix, Sunday
The ING Renault F1 Team took its first victory of the season today as Fernando Alonso produced a brilliant tactical drive to win the Singapore Grand Prix, the sport’s first ever night race.
Fernando started the race light on fuel and enjoyed an aggressive opening stint on the soft option tyres, rising to 11th before heading to the pits on lap 12. Nelson meanwhile was running heavy, but lost the car on the exit of turn 17 a couple of laps later, which brought out the safety car.
The safety car period saw most of the field head for the pits, while Fernando remained on-track and rose through the field, emerging in the top five and eventually leading the race as the remaining drivers made their stops. From there the Spaniard pushed hard to build a lead that he would never lose, making his final stop on lap 41. A late safety car period failed to halt Fernando’s progress as he swept to his 20th Grand Prix victory.
Having scored ten points this weekend the team has moved into fourth position in the constructors’ championship with a five point lead over Toyota in fifth. The victory gives the whole team a boost as the championship builds to a climax with the remaining three races.

“This is a fantastic result – my first podium of the season; my first victory and I’m very happy, although I think it will take several days for me to realise what we have achieved. Wining a Grand Prix here just seemed to be impossible because we missed our chance yesterday in qualifying, but we were very fortunate today and it’s a superb result for the team. We chose a very aggressive strategy and we had a bit of luck, but we had the pace and the car was fantastic throughout the weekend.”

“From the start of the race things were complicated and I had a lot of graining and the situation got worse and worse. The team asked me to push, which I tried to do and finally I lost the rear of my car. I hit the wall heavily but I’m ok. I am disappointed with my race but obviously very happy for the team this evening.”

“This is an amazing victory for Renault and for Fernando. Since Friday we knew that the car was very competitive and we were very disappointed at the end of qualifying. Singapur (SG). Anstatt der befürchteten Prozession auf dem engen Singapore Marina Circuit erlebte das Publikum beim ersten Nachtrennen der Formel 1 spannenden Rennsport. Die Beute für das BMW Sauber F1 Team fiel mit drei Punkten für Nick Heidfeld (Platz sechs) allerdings etwas mager aus. Robert Kubica hatte großes Pech, weil er während einer Safety-Car-Phase tanken musste, als die Boxengasse noch geschlossen war. Nach der Bestrafung wurde der Pole noch Elfter.

„Obwohl man sich im Grunde nicht beschweren kann, wenn man von Startplatz neun aus Sechster wird, finde ich es unheimlich schade, dass ich heute keine Chance hatte, meinen wahren Speed zu zeigen. Mein Auto war sehr gut, und ich hätte viel schneller fahren können, wenn ich nicht ständig im Verkehr festgesteckt hätte. Ich habe sogar Sprit gespart und die Reifen geschont, weil ich hoffte, dass die anderen sich ihre Reifen ruinieren und ich dann später angreifen kann. Einige hatten später auch Probleme mit ihren Reifen, aber mein Vorteil hat trotzdem nicht für einen Angriff gereicht. Mein Start war gut, ich habe es immerhin an Nico Rosberg vorbei geschafft. Jedenfalls habe ich kaum geschwitzt, weil mein Rennen einfach nicht anstrengend war.“

„Das Rennen war physisch sehr hart. Es gibt hier so viele Bodenwellen, ich hoffe wirklich, dass die Veranstalter an dem Streckenbelag fürs nächste Jahr etwas tun werden. Außerdem wurde die Sicht immer schlechter, weil ich müde wurde. Während der letzten 15 Runden hatte ich fürchterliche Kopfschmerzen. Die Entscheidung, nicht gleich in der ersten Runde, während die Boxengasse geschlossen war, zum Tanken zu kommen, war unglücklich und hat mich das Rennen gekostet, weil die anderen Autos hinter mir die Lücke schließen konnten. Das Team hoffte natürlich, dass die Boxengasse rasch wieder geöffnet würde, aber das war eben nicht so. So etwas gehört zum Rennsport.“

„Die Formel-1-Geschichte ist um ein spektakuläres Kapitel erweitert worden. Das erste Nachtrennen war ein voller Erfolg, Kompliment an die Verantwortlichen. Das Rennen selbst war turbulent und durch die erste Safety-Car-Phase bestimmt. Leider hat die Pit-Lane-Regel Robert dann komplett aus dem Rennen geworfen, während Nick gerade so lange draußen bleiben konnte, bis die Boxengasse wieder geöffnet wurde. Für Robert ist es sehr schade, denn er war gut unterwegs, weitere wichtige Punkte in der Gesamtwertung zu holen. Nick hat als Sechster drei Plätze gut gemacht und drei Zähler eingefahren. Auch bei den direkten Konkurrenten lief längst nicht alles nach Plan. Neben Nick hat von den ersten Sechs der Gesamtwertung nur noch Lewis Hamilton gepunktet. Gratulation an Renault und Fernando Alonso für den Sieg in diesem aufregenden Rennen.“

„Der Rennstart war für unsere Fahrer okay. Robert hat seine Position verteidigt, Nick hat einen Platz gewonnen. Damit waren wir mit beiden Fahrzeugen wie geplant unterwegs und konnten zu den hinter uns liegenden Autos einen Vorsprung herausfahren. Dann jedoch hat die erste Safety-Car-Phase Roberts Rennen komplett zerstört. Wir mussten nachtanken, obwohl die Boxengasse noch geschlossen war. Die daraus resultierende Strafe hat Robert leider hoffnungslos zurückgeworfen – und das auf einer Strecke, auf der Überholen sehr schwierig ist. Am Ende rette Nick immerhin drei Zähler, damit haben wir 2008 auch weiterhin in jedem Rennen gepunktet.“

Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore 2008
Fernando Alonso (ING Renault F1 Team) won Formula One’s first-ever night race by using a super soft-soft-soft tyre strategy at the Marina Bat Street Circuit for the inaugural F1 Singapore Grand Prix. Alonso prevailed in a tension-filled 61-lap race which featured two safety car periods and a number of notable incidents. He started from fifteenth position on the grid, on Bridgestone’s super soft, unlike most of the field, who started on the soft. He was the first driver to pit, shortly before his team-mate Nelson Piquet crashed into the barriers, bringing about the first safety car period, stopping drivers from pitting without penalty until the pits were reopened. Alonso made his second stop on lap 41 and exited still in the lead of the race. A second safety car period was brought about by Adrian Sutil (Force India) hitting the barriers, but Alonso was able to retain his lead on the restart and cross the finish line for his twentieth Grand Prix win.
AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg finished in second place, 2.9 seconds behind Alonso, and registered his best-ever Formula One result. He also started the race on the super soft tyre, but pitted whilst the pits were closed, meaning a stop-go penalty had to be served. Despite this, he finished second. Drivers’ championship leader Lewis Hamilton (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) finished third after using a soft-soft-super soft tyre strategy.
Timo Glock (Panasonic Toyota Racing) finished in fourth position, ahead of Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel. Nick Heidfeld (BMW Sauber) finished sixth whilst David Coulthard (Red Bull Racing) came home seventh. Kazuki Nakajima (AT&T Williams) finished in eighth position meaning that both Williams cars were in the points for the first time since the season opener at the Australian Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen (Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro) used the soft compound tyre to set the race’s fastest lap, a 1min 45.599secs on lap 14. Raikkonen later exited the race with four laps to go after making contact with the barriers. His team-mate, Felipe Massa, who started from pole, finished in thirteenth position after exiting from his first pit-stop with the fuel hose still attached to his car, and receiving a penalty for this misdemeanour. Leaving Singapore, Hamilton leads the drivers’ championship with 84 points to Massa’s 77. Kubica stays third on 64. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes now lead the constructors’ championship with 135 points from Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro’s 134. The BMW Sauber F1 Team are third with 120.
Hirohide Hamashima - Director of Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development, said: “Tonight we saw an exciting race with an unpredictable result played out under the spotlights of Singapore at this fabulous new facility, with a very good job done by the organisers. The track surface was the best we have seen all week and the soft compound worked very well with good consistency. The performance from the super soft was better than we saw earlier in the week and the wear rate and graining were acceptable. Congratulations to Fernando Alonso and the ING Renault F1 Team for their first win of the season and to Nico Rosberg for his best-ever F1 result. Today was a good day for Bridgestone as we contested our first ever Formula One night race and also in Japan Valentino Rossi won the MotoGP race at Motegi and secured the riders’ championship for which we offer our congratulations.”
