Wickens takes victory in Race Two
Red Bull Junior driver extends championship advantage
Robert Wickens took a lights to flag victory in the second race of the FIA Formula Two Championship this afternoon (Sunday) at Valencia, Spain.
Italian Mirko Bortolotti finished in second, with Philipp Eng completing the podium placings. The trio recieved their trophies from Patrick Head, Director of Engineering at the AT&T Williams F1 Team.
Wickens got a clean start from pole, but soon came under pressure from Red Bull teammate Mirko Bortolotti. Andy Soucek made a poor start from second on the grid, and was passed off the line by Bortolotti, Philipp Eng and Nicola De Marco. Soucek was back up to fourth by the end of the opening lap after making a good move past De Marco.
Bortolotti tried everything to force Wickens into a mistake, but by the middle phase of the 17 lap encounter, both drivers settled into their respective positions. Behind the Red Bull pairing, Soucek was putting Eng under intense pressure for third. The 19-year-old Austrian held strong to take his maiden podium in F2, whilst Soucek had to settle for fourth. De Marco stayed in close contention throughout and crossed the line in an impressive fifth place, having seen off the attentions of Mikhail Aleshin – the Russian completing a top six result for all three Red Bull Junior drivers.
Edoardo Piscopo drove to a fairly lonely but consistent seventh place and Carlos Iaconelli rounded out the points finishers, after making a stellar move past Julien Jousse around the outside at Turn One. Tobias Hegewald repeated the trick on the Frenchman a lap later and finished ninth, whilst Jousse hung on to take tenth.
There was disappointment for female racer Natacha Gachnang who tangled with Alex Brundle on the opening lap – Gachnang retired on the spot, whilst Brundle pitted for repairs. Jolyon Palmer was tapped into the gravel and out of the race on lap one and yesterday’s surprise package Kazim Vasiliauskas went off after making contact with Jousse in a battle for eighth place. The Lithuanian returned to the circuit at the back of the field, but was able to take the fastest lap of the race.
Robert Wickens said: "This is the best weekend of my career so far; it’s pretty much been perfect. From start to finish it has been good; we struggled a little in free practice but we didn’t lose our cool and everything fell into place nicely – it’s basically been a fairytale. It was a good race, Mirko pushed me a lot at the beginning but it was just fantastic. I can’t believe the weekend and the year have started so well."

RACE 1 & 2 REPORT
SEAT AND BMW SHARE THE SPANISH GLORY
SEAT and BMW dominated one race apiece in the fifth event of the season.
The turbodiesel León cars filled the four top positions in the first race, marking a triumphant moment for SEAT in their home race meeting. Yvan Muller scored his third victory of the season making it clear that it won’t be easy for anybody (including his own team-mates) to deprive him of the World Champion’s crown.
However, in the second race, Augusto Farfus and Jörg Müller managed to overturn the situation. The BMW Team Germany duo claimed a 1-2 of crucial importance for the German Manufacturer, as it not only marked BMW’s first victory so far this year, but also re-launched their hopes in the title fight that now sees Farfus lying second, only three points behind Muller.
Chevrolet’s winning streak came to an end after four consecutive successes in Marrakech and Pau. The Spanish weekend was not positive for the drivers of the Cruze cars who all remained out of the points. As for LADA, their hope of making a step forward with the new engine were totally hindered by a number of technical issues.
In the Independents‘ Trophy, Stefano D’Aste obtained his first victory of the season, but the fight for the title seems to be an affair between Tom Coronel (winner of the first race), Félix Porteiro and Franz Engstler who are covered by only two points.
The championship will resume in Brno, Czech Republic, on May 21st, for rounds 11 and 12.

MIGUEL SOCÍAS SUBE AL PODIO EN EL CIRCUITO DE OLIVA

Una vez más el líquido elemento nos ha acompañado en nuestro periplo por la
Comunidad Valenciana con motivo de la tercera cita del Campeonato del Mediterráneo
de Karting que se ha disputado en el Circuito de Oliva. Miguel Socías tras una gran
carrera ha logrado su primer podido en su primera temporada en esta disciplina.
En la jornada del sábado el equipo mallorquín estuvo probando reglajes sobre una
pista seca y con buen agarre y siempre buscando el mejor desarrollo para conseguir
en los entrenos oficiales una buena posición de salida de cara a las carreras del
domingo. El piloto de la escudería Mallorca Competició firmaba un octavo lugar
en los entrenamientos cronometrados de la tarde del sábado quedando en la zona
media de la clasificación.
El domingo amanecía bastante nubloso y con una pista mojada y muy resbaladiza
a consecuencia de la lluvia caída durante la noche, ello obligaba al director de carrera
a declarar la primera manga en mojado. Un crecido Miguel Socías afrontaba esta
primera tanda con optimismo tras encontrarse muy bien en el "warm up" previo.
La salida del campaneter era fulgurante nada más iniciarse la contienda se situaba
en la tercera plaza, justo delante del piloto que había marcado la "pole". A mitad de
carrera éste le superaría cruzando la línea de meta en un meritorio cuarto puesto.
La sorpresa saltaba instantes después cuando en las verificaciones era excluido el
tercer clasificado por irregularidades en una junta del motor. De esta manera Miguel
Socías pasaba a ocupar el tercer escalón del podio.
En la segunda manga de carrera las condiciones del piso cambiaban radicalmente,
y aunque había algún que otro charco, la mayor parte del circuito estaba seca. El
piloto de MS Motorsport salía desde el tercer lugar de parrilla y a pesar que hacía
una buena salida a medida que iba transcurriendo la carrera el motor iba perdiendo
fuelle y sus rivales le iban rebasando. Socías aguantaba como podía los envites de
los otros participantes logrando terminar en la séptima posición.
Después de subir al podio Miguel Socías comentaba:
"Ha sido un gran fin de semana. Me he encontrado muy a gusto con la pista mojada
y he logrado mi primer podio. El cual quiero brindar a mis patrocinadores, para mi
ha sido un fin de semana redondo y aunque en la segunda carrera podría haber
vuelto a dar la campanada el motor ha bajado el rendimiento y tras cuatro carreras
ya necesita un buen repaso. De la misma manera quiero agradecer a mi mecánico
y a Vicente Vallés el trabajo hecho en la puesta a punto del kart, ha sido vital en la
obtención de este primer podido de mi carrera."

TARQUINI LEADS SEAT SPORT QUARTET
Gabriele Tarquini’s last qualifying lap secured him pole position for tomorrow, the first since Oschersleben 2007. It was a successful qualifying for SEAT at their home track as they claimed the top four grid spots (Tarquini, Yvan Muller, Jordi Gené and Tiago Monteiro).
A flurry of action at the end of Q1 saw BMW drivers; Jörg Müller, Alessandro Zanardi Sergio Hernández and Andy Priaulx denied a place in Q2.
Q1 – While Muller had the fastest time for the majority of the session it was his SEAT Sport team-mate Rickard Rydell who bettered him towards the end. Rydell’s lap of 1:45.424 was 0.092 quicker than Muller’s while a third SEAT man, Monteiro, went through to Q2 as third fastest (1:45.542). Fourth fastest was Augusto Farfus, the only BMW to make the cut.
All three of the Chevrolet drivers entered Q2. Alain Menu was the fastest with a time of 1:45.681 followed by Nicola Larini who was seventh (1:45.854) and Robert Huff (1:46.038) who was tenth and used his last lap to knock Jörg Müller out of the Q2 running. Jordi Gené and Gabriele Tarquini also went into Q2, as sixth and eighth, while Tom Coronel went through as ninth and the only independent driver despite joining the session late due to starter motor problems.
Q2 – While the Chevrolet cars waited in the garage, SEAT Sport’s cars hit the attack straight away. However, it was in fact Tarquini’s last lap of 1:44.414 that gave him pole position. With this, Muller was demoted to second on the grid while Gené and Monteiro filed in third and fourth. Farfus posted a time of 1:45.080 mid way into the session which secured him fifth position, ahead of Chevrolet man Menu (1:45.314). The Chevrolet cars hit the track with time for two flying laps – Huff qualified eighth and Larini tenth.
The remaining two positions went to Rydell in ninth (the Swede spoiled his last attemp running wide well beyond the kerbs) and Coronel who put in a fantastic last lap to secure seventh.
However, the Dutchman eventually had his Q2 times disallowed after his car was found to be underweight during the technical checks.
Wickens wins opening round of the 2009 Championship
Canadian dominates the first race in 25 years as FIA President Max Mosley watches on
Canadian Robert Wickens, a member of the Red Bull Junior Team, has won the first F2 race to take place in 25 years after taking a commanding victory at Valencia today (Saturday).
Robert took the win and the points lead of the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship after a flawless drive from pole position. Carlos Iaconelli was second and Kazim Vasiliauskas third, with the trio receiving their trophies from FIA President Max Mosley. Tobias Hegewald retired after running into a slowing Andy Soucek, causing a safety car period.
Wickens got a fantastic start off the line, followed by Soucek and Iaconelli, who were able to pass Hegewald after the German got bogged down from the start. Mikhail Aleshin was fourth until Lithuanian Kazim Vasiliauskas made a great move on Aleshin at the final turn to move into fifth before the end of the opening lap.
Hegewald passed Iaconelli for third before the race began to stabilise up front, before drama struck at the front of the field. On lap 14, a slowing Andy Soucek exited Turn 12 and an unsighted Tobias Hegewald made contact with the Spaniard. Both cars were out on the spot and a safety car was deployed.
At the restart, Wickens made another textbook getaway with Carlos Iaconelli settling behind in second. The fight for third continued as both Mikhail Aleshin and Julien Jousse pressured Vasiliauskas. Jousse made a move on Red Bull junior driver Aleshin, but the Frenchman ran wide coming out of turn two – handing fifth place to Philipp Eng. The Austrian himself then lost the position by spinning on the final lap of the race.
Jousse was able to re-collect fifth at the finish ahead of a charging Mirko Bortolotti, whilst Henry Surtees and Alex Brundle rounded out the top eight.
There were some great tussles behind as Nicola de Marco, Jack Clarke and Sebastian Hohenthal scrambled to get in the points. None of the trio could manage it, although Italian De Marco was able to sneak past Clarke for ninth place late in the race.
A delighted race winner Robert Wickens said: "It was a bit of a difficult race. I was able to get a good start and hold onto P1, but then Andy was able to put pressure on me for the opening laps so I had to push quite hard. Once I had a bit of a gap I just focussed on consistency and keeping it together."
"My car was very consistent and driveable and we made some changes before the race that went well. To be perfectly honest I would have preferred the safety car to not come out, because I had quite a healthy gap and was happy with where I was. I got a good restart though, and it’s phenomenal to get the first win. It’s a big boost in confidence – everyone goes into the first race wanting to win, so for me to do it is a great way to start the championship."
Carlos Iaconelli drove a good consistent race to take second, but the Brazilian admitted it was a tough race: "The race was not easy for anybody, but I made a good start and it went well," he said. "In the beginning I struggled with my brake balance, but I just tried to push hard and stay on track. It was quite difficult at times. I didn’t know who was behind me when Andy went off, but I managed to avoid him and from there I just tried to guide the car home."
Surprise package of the weekend so far has been 18-year-old Kazim Vasiliauskas who is embarking on his first full season of car racing: "I’m really surprised because I started from P9," Vasiliauskas admitted. "My start was good and on the first lap I managed to pass some drivers on the inside and outside, and tried to chase down Hegewald. Then in the middle of the race I had some luck when Hegewald and Soucek had an accident, but I was fast as well."
"I had a lot of nerves after the safety car, because I only had one boost and thought I might struggle into the first corner, but after that I was a little bit faster and the race went well."
FIA President Max Mosley said: "I thought the first race was excellent. The whole Formula Two set up is so professional, but what was most impressive was that all the cars were so reliable. It was also very impressive during qualifying to see 15 drivers from 12 nationalities separated by less than one second.
"I think the championship fits precisely with the cost cutting measures that are being adopted in Formula One. The barriers to entry have just been too big and too expensive in the past. This is a means for people to get into Formula One without spending a fortune, and I wouldnt be at all surprised to see some drivers from this years Formula Two Championship progress into Formula One."
Championship leader Wickens will also start tomorrow’s F2 race from pole position and the remaining 24 drivers will be fighting hard to make sure the Canadian does not score a clean sweep of victories on the opening weekend of the season.
Gary Paffett siegt auf dem EuroSpeedway
Mit einer taktischen Meisterleistung und optimal getimten Boxenstopps holte der Brite Gary Paffett auf dem EuroSpeedway Lausitz nach 52 Runden beim zweiten DTM-Rennen 2009 den Sieg für Mercedes-Benz. Der 28-Jährige platzierte seine beiden Pflichtboxenstopps spät in den Runden 24 und 34 und konnte so als Führender Runde um Runde seinen Vorsprung ausbauen. Zweiter wurde sein Markenkollege Bruno Spengler aus Kanada, der ebenfalls dank später Stopps noch an dem Schweden Mattias Ekström im Audi vorbeikam. Von der Pole-Position gestartet, beendete der Champion der Jahre 2004 und 2007 das Rennen als Dritter.
Ich weiß nicht, was am Hockenheimring los war, aber heute hat einfach alles gepasst. Vor allem die Strategie, die mein Team erarbeitet hat, war die Grundlage des Erfolgs. Das wird eine tolle Saison. Ich freu mich jetzt schon auf den Norisring in vier Wochen, sagte Paffett nach seinem elften Sieg in der DTM. Für seinen Arbeitgeber Mercedes-Benz war es bereits der 148. Erfolg in der populärsten internationalen Tourenwagenserie. Ekström, der bereits in Runde 13 zum ersten und in Umlauf 22 zum zweiten Service an die Box kam, sagte zu seinem dritten Platz: Ich bin ein Rennen ohne Fehler gefahren und war trotzdem nicht so schnell, wie die beiden Mercedes. Das Ziel ist natürlich, von der Pole aus zu gewinnen, aber wir werden beim nächsten Mal schneller sein.
Der Vize-Champion des vergangenen Jahres, Paul Di Resta (GB/Mercedes-Benz), fuhr vor dem amtierenden Champion Timo Scheider aus Lahnstein (Audi) auf Platz vier. Mercedes-Benz-Fahrer Jamie Green aus Leicester in Großbritannien wurde als Sechster bester Pilot eines Fahrzeugs aus dem Jahrgang 2008.
Mit einer tollen Aufholjagd begeisterte Ralf Schumacher in der AMG Mercedes C-Klasse die Fans in der Niederlausitz. Vom letzten Platz in das Rennen gegangen, kämpfte sich der Kerpener bis auf die zehnte Position vor. Ein enttäuschendes Rennwochenende erlebte der Auftaktsieger von Hockenheim, Tom Kristensen (DK). Zunächst verpasste der Audi-Pilot beim Qualifying am Samstag den Sprung in die zweite Runde. Am Sonntag war der 41-Jährige in viele Zweikämpfe verwickelt und wurde gleich zweimal von der Rennleitung mit Boxengassendurchfahrten für seine Manöver bestraft. Kristensen hatte keine Chance in den Spitzenkampf einzugreifen und wurde nach 180,856 Kilometern Zwölfter.
In der Gesamtwertung führt Champion Scheider mit zwölf Punkten vor Kristensen und Paffett, die beide zehn Zähler auf dem Konto haben. Das dritte DTM-Rennwochenende des Jahres findet vom 26. bis 28. Juni auf dem Norisring statt.
Mercedes-Benz-Motorsportchef Norbert Haug: Ich bin überrascht als Erster sprechen zu dürfen. Ich habe vor dem Rennen nicht erwartet, dass wir stark genug wären, um hier und heute zu gewinnen. Aber wir waren am Wochenende stärker als in Hockenheim. Wir hatten bereits im Qualifying eine gute Strategie. Gary wurde nach dem letzten Rennen zurückversetzt und musste von Platz sieben starten. Von dort ist er dann aufs Podium gefahren. Heute hat sich gezeigt, dass es möglich ist, auf gebrauchten Reifen ein gutes Rennen zu fahren. Das war der Schlüssel zum Erfolg. Wir haben fünf Autos in den Punkterängen, alle acht Piloten auf den ersten elf Plätzen untergebracht und eine beste Rundenzeit von Jamie. Hier hat das Pendel wohl für uns ausgeschlagen. Ich freue mich auf den nächsten Saisonhöhepunkt – das Rennen auf dem Norisring.
Audi-Motorsportchef Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich: Wir haben über das Rennen nicht ganz die Pace der beiden Mercedes mitgehen können. Mit unserem kleinen Gewichtsnachteil spüren wir den Belag hier auf dem EuroSpeedway ganz besonders. Zudem waren Ekström und Scheider permanent in einer Gruppe, in der sie sich behaupten mussten. Dass Mercedes wiederkommen würde war klar. Heute waren sie einfach zu stark. Beim nächsten Rennen am Norisring werden die Karten neu gemischt. Das macht die Serie auch so spannend.
Christian Vietoris gewinnt Heimspiel seines Teams

Beim Heimspiel seines in Berlin beheimateten Teams Mücke Motorsport feierte Christian Vietoris seinen ersten Saisonsieg in der Formel 3 Euro Serie. Der Deutsche gewann auf dem EuroSpeedway Lausitz mit einem Vorsprung von 4,819 Sekunden vor dem Spanier Roberto Merhi (Manor Motorsport). Sam Bird (Mücke Motorsport) wurde als Dritter abgewinkt. Bird und Merhi liegen nun punktgleich auf Rang zwei der Gesamtwertung, die Führung hat weiterhin Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) inne. Der Franzose beendete den vierten Saisonlauf der stärksten Nachwuchsserie der Welt nach einem Frühstart und der folgenden Durchfahrtsstrafe auf dem 14. Platz.
Vietoris setzte sich am Start durch und fuhr einem sicheren Start/Ziel-Sieg entgegen. Der zunächst zweitplatzierte Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix) musste wegen eines Frühstarts zu einer Durchfahrtsstrafe antreten und sah die Zielflagge nur auf Rang 13. Brendon Hartley (Carlin Motorsport), Test- und Ersatzfahrer des Formel-1-Teams Red Bull Racing, belegte den vierten Rang, gefolgt von Henkie Waldschmidt (SG Formula) und Mika Mäki (Signature).
Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport): Ich freue mich über den ersten Sieg in diesem Jahr. Nach dem schwachen Qualifying mit Platz 13 habe ich aus dem Wochenende noch einige Punkte mitnehmen können. Diese Punkte können in der Endabrechnung noch wichtig werden.
Roberto Merhi (Manor Motorsport): Ich bin mit dem zweiten Platz sehr zufrieden. Vor diesem Wochenende bin ich noch nie ein Rennen auf dem EuroSpeedway Lausitz gefahren und auch der Test und das Freie Training am Freitag verliefen nicht nach meinen Wünschen. Dass es am Ende doch noch zu einem Podestplatz gereicht hat, freut mich natürlich.
Sam Bird (Mücke Motorsport): Es war ein gutes Rennen und der dritte Platz ist ein gutes Resultat. Ich bin zwar die ganze Zeit hinter Roberto gefahren, aber ich hatte keine Chance, ihn so unter Druck zu setzen, dass er einen Fehler machen würde. In einem Formel-3-Auto ist das Überholen nicht so einfach, wenn der Vordermann keinen Fehler macht.
Jules Bianchi siegt auf dem EuroSpeedway Lausitz

Der Franzose Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) feierte seinen ersten Sieg in der aktuellen Saison der Formel 3 Euro Serie. Auf dem 3,478 Kilometer langen EuroSpeedway Lausitz beendete er das Rennen mit einem Vorsprung von 2,776 Sekunden auf Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix). Der Finne sah das Ziel als bester Rookie. Rang drei ging nach 23 Runden an den Franzosen Jean Karl Vernay (Signature). Mit seinem Erfolg übernahm Bianchi die Führung in der Gesamtwertung der stärksten Nachwuchsserie der Welt; Vernay folgt mit drei Zählern Rückstand auf Rang zwei.
Bianchi überholte den in Führung liegenden Bottas in der siebten Runde und fuhr einem sicheren Sieg entgegen. Während die Positionen an der Spitze bezogen waren, tobte der Kampf um die Ränge sieben bis neun. Henkie Waldschmidt (SG Formula) hielt dem rundenlangen Druck seines Verfolgers Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport) stand und sicherte sich Rang sieben.
Der vom dritten Startplatz ins Rennen gegangene Atte Mustonen (Motopark Academy) schied nach schwachem Start und einer Kollision mit Alexandre Marsoin (SG Formula) schon in der ersten Runde aus.
Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix): Ich freue mich über meinen ersten Sieg in diesem Jahr und über die Führung in der Gesamtwertung, was mir sehr wichtig ist. Nach dem Auftakt vor zwei Wochen in Hockenheim haben wir am Auto gearbeitet und hier lief es schon wesentlich besser. Valtteri konnte ich überholen, weil er einen Fahrfehler machte. Für morgen hoffe ich auf weitere Punkte.
Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix): Ich bin trotz des zweiten Platzes auch ein ganz kleines bisschen enttäuscht, weil ich hier hätte gewinnen können. Leider bin ich einmal auf den noch nassen Teil eines Kerbs bekommen und leicht ins Gras gerutscht. Das ermöglichte Jules erst den Überholvorgang.
Jean Karl Vernay (Signature): Der dritte Platz und erneut sechs Punkte sind eine gute Ausbeute für mich. Mein Ziel ist, regelmäßig in Podestnähe zu fahren und möglichst konstant zu punkten. Zu Beginn war ich etwas schneller als die Piloten vor mir, aber Überholen ist hier schwierig, wenn der Vordermann keinen Fehler macht.
