Italian takes commanding victory ahead of Aleshin and Eng

Mirko Bortolotti has won the opening race this afternoon at Brno, Czech Republic, and taken the points lead in the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship.
Fellow Red Bull Junior driver Mikhail Aleshin was second, whilst Philipp Eng finished third after intense battles with Carlos Iaconelli, who spun off into retirement at Turn 8 on Lap 14, and later Henri Karjalainen.

Bortolotti led the field down to Turn 1 on the opening lap, and was able to hold off an attack from Aleshin during the early stages of the race. The Italian then set about establishing a gap back to Aleshin, and went on take his maiden F2 victory in commanding fashion. Aleshin went on to take a comfortable second, as several drivers squabbled behind him for the final podium position.

Philipp Eng and Carlos Iaconelli held third and fourth early on after they both passed Henri Karjalainen. Brazilian driver Iaconelli spun out of the race whilst pressuring Eng, before Karjalainen attempted to retake third position. The Finn chased down Eng during the final laps, but Eng held on by just 0.283s.
Julien Jousse had a quiet and consistent run to fifth, whilst Armaan Ebrahim held off a charging Edoardo Piscopo to clinch sixth. Piscopo had to make his way through the field from the back of the grid after failing to get away cleanly on the formation lap - the Italian producing a series of breathtaking overtaking moves in one of the drives of the day.
Tom Gladdis was the highest British finisher in eighth, just ahead of Robert Wickens, who set the fastest lap right at the end of the race. Jolyon Palmer was in tenth, ahead of fellow Formula Palmer Audi graduate Alex Brundle.
Pole-sitter Nicola De Marco was forced to start from the pit lane, but recovered to finish 12th.
Henry Surtees and Jack Clarke were both eliminated following a startline clash, which also involved Wickens. All three drivers were side-by-side on the run down to turn one, before inevitable contact was made. Only Wickens was able to continue, and a brief safety car period was called in order to remove the stricken cars of Surtees and Clarke. Pietro Gandolfi, Kazim Vasiliauskas, Germán Sánchez and Jens Höing all retired following spins.

Mirko Bortolotti said: “I had a good start and a good race. I’m very happy to be in front at the moment, but there are a lot of races to go. My mentality is that there are 24 other drivers who all want to win, so I will fight and we’ll see at the end.”

Mikhail Aleshin said: “If I had just got a slightly better start then I might have tried the pass on Mirko. It wasn’t really possible but we will see next time. I was pushing the whole race, and I’m happy to have guided the car home in second.”

Philipp Eng said: “It’s great to be third. There were still two drivers in front of me so I can’t be 100% happy, but it is still nice to back up my pace from Valencia and it is always good to be on the podium.”

QUALIFYING REPORT

FARFUS SNATCHES HIS THIRD POLE

BMW cars will occupy the front row for tomorrow’s Race 1 as Augusto Farfus claimed first and Andy Priaulx second. With a time of 2:09.590 the Brazilian took his third pole position of the season. Alessandro Zanardi secured third place ahead of Chevrolet’s Nicola Larini. Rickard Rydell and Gabriele Tarquini were the only SEAT drivers to enter Q2 and they will line up fifth and sixth on the grid.

Q1 - It looked as though Jörg Müller’s opening gambit of 2:10.424 would equate to the fastest time but on the final lap Andy Priaulx beat it by a massive eight tenths of a second. SEAT Sport also had a surge in the dying minutes to ensure their presence in Q2. Gabriele Tarquini and Rickard Rydell made the top ten for the Spanish marque but in doing so knocked off team-mate Tiago Monteiro. Jordi Gené and Yvan Muller also narrowly missed the cut in 12^th and 13^th places. Alain Menu and Nicola Larini progressed to Q2 for Chevrolet but despite putting in his best lap at the end, Robert Huff could only manage the 14^th best time. Félix Porteiro snuck into the top ten, being the only Independent driver to do so.

Q2 - With the majority of the cars venturing onto the track late in the session it was all to play for in the final minute. In fact, with the exception of Jörg Müller, all the drivers’ best times came from their last lap, and in most cases in was their only flying lap. Priaulx took provisional pole but Farfus bettered it by just four hundredths of a second. Zanardi, who has a very strong record at the Brno track, was 0.272 shy of pole position. Larini, Rydell and Tarquini ensured BMW did not dominate further than the top three. Jörg Müller will line up seventh ahead of Alain Menu, Sergio Hernández and Félix Porteiro.

Podium: Pommer, Vanthoor und Monien

Das erste Rennen des ATS Formel-3-Cup in Oschersleben hat erneut bewiesen, dass bei Zettl Sportsline die Tendenz klar nach oben zeigt. Zwar konnte der Van-Amersfoort-Pilot Laurens Vanthoor (Dallara F307 Volkswagen) den siebten Saisonlauf gewinnen, aber Rang zwei und drei sicherten sich die beiden Deutschen Markus Pommer und Nico Monien (beide Dallara F307 Mercedes) aus dem bayrischen Team. Für Neuling Pommer war es sogar sein erster Podestplatz in der Formel 3. Vanthoor war am Start an seinem Teamkollegen vorbeigezogen und übernahm die Führung. Zwar übte Pommer in den ersten Kurven viel Druck aus, doch der Belgier fand schnell seine Pace und setzte sich ab.
Stef Dusseldorp hatte bange Stunden hinter sich, als er am Samstagabend in der Startaufstellung stand. Der Niederländer hatte im zweiten Qualifying seinen Dallara F307 Volkswagen bei einem Abflug heftig beschädigt. Doch sein Team Van-Amersfoort-Racing legte sich richtig ins Zeug und baute das Fahrzeug fast komplett neu auf. Kurz vor Abfahrt in den Vorstart war der weiße Dallara fertig. Am Start konnte der 19-Jährige seine Pole-Position nicht nutzen und fiel sogar auf den dritten Rang hinter Pommer und vor Monien zurück. Noch zur Hälfte des Rennens sah es nach einem sicheren Podiumsplatz aus. Doch in der zwölften Runde drehte sich der Niederländer ohne Fremdeinwirkung und kam auf Platz sechs wieder auf die Strecke zurück.
Nico Monien nahm dieses Geschenk gerne an und übernahm Rang drei. Der 18-Jährige fuhr das Rennen fast nur mit einem Arm, da er sich im Qualifying eine Prellung am linken Ellenbogen zugezogen hatte. ″Mir war einer der Hauser-Brüder ins Auto gefahren und dabei habe ich mir den Arm angeschlagen″, erzählte Monien. ″Im Rennen war der Arm fast taub und hat eher nur noch unterstützend gewirkt.″
Eine Sensation gab es in der ATS Formel-3-Trophy: zum ersten Mal in dieser Saison gewann nicht der Ukrainer Sergey Chukanov (Arttech F24 OPC-Challenge). Zwar lag er bis zur Mitte des Rennens in Führung, doch dann drehte er sich und reihte sich auf dem vorletzten Gesamtplatz wieder ein. Damit durfte sich der Finne Mika Vähämäki (Dallara F304 Opel) über seinen ersten Saisonsieg freuen. Rang zwei sicherte sich sein Landsmann Jesse Krohn (Arttech F24 OPC-Challenge) vor dem Deutschen Francesco Lopez (Dallara F304 Opel).
Laurens Vanthoor: Mein Start war ganz gut und ich konnte an Stef vorbeiziehen. Doch in den ersten beiden Kurven musste ich mich ziemlich gegen Markus wehren. Dann habe ich gepusht was das Auto hergab und konnte schnell einen Anstand herausfahren. Später ging es mir darum konstante Runden zu fahren und sie Reifen zu schonen. Als ich gegen Ende die dunklen Wolken am Himmel sah, hatte ich schon Angst, dass es anfangen würde zu regnen. Aber zum Glück blieb es trocken.
Markus Pommer: Mein Start war genial und ich konnte sofort Druck auf Vanthoor ausüben. Ich hatte noch überlegt ein Überholmanöver zu riskieren. Doch dann wurde Laurens immer schneller und ich konnte nicht mehr mithalten. Deswegen habe ich mich darauf konzentriert das Auto zu schonen und das Rennen nach Hause zu fahren. In den letzten beiden Runden habe ich noch mehr Speed rausgenommen. Deswegen konnte Nico auch aufholen.
Nico Monien: Ich bin zufrieden mit meinem dritten Rang. Nach dem Start habe ich hinter Stef festgehangen und habe auf einen Fehler von ihm gehofft. Aus eigener Kraft kam ich nicht vorbei. Zum Glück hat er sich später auch gedreht. Morgen will ich von Startplatz zwei aus voll angreifen.

Nico Monien

In den Qualifyings für die Läufe sieben und acht des ATS Formel-3-Cup in Oschersleben im Rahmen der FIA GT Championship sicherten sich der Niederländer Stef Dusseldorp und sein belgischer Teamkollege Laurens Vanthoor (beide Dallara F307 Volkswagen) jeweils die Pole-Position. Allerdings flog Dusseldorp in der zweiten Session ab und beschädigte sein Fahrzeug schwer. Das Team hat nun bis heute Abend Zeit alles zu reparieren. Der gut gefüllte Zeitplan machte den zeitlich verkürzten Qualifying-Modus notwendig. Anstatt zwei Mal 30 Minuten, standen den Piloten heute zwei Mal 20 Minuten mit einer zehnminütigen Pause zur Verfügung.
Das erste Qualifying war hart umkämpft: gleich mehrere Piloten schafften den Sprung an die Spitze. Zu Beginn wechselte die Pole-Position zwischen dem Brasilianer Rafael Suzuki (Dallara F307 Volkswagen) und dem Deutschen Nico Monien (Dallara F307 Mercedes). Später schalteten sich auch noch Bernd Herndlhofer, Willi Steindl, Rahel Frey (alle Dallara F307 Mercedes) sowie Dusseldorp und Vanthoor in den Kampf um die schnellste Rundenzeit ein. Mit dem besseren Ende für die beiden Van-Amersfoort-Piloten: Dusseldorp umrundete den 3,696 Kilometer langen Kurs in 1:21.945 Minuten und sicherte sich damit seine erste Pole Position in der Formel 3. Sein Teamkollge Vanthoor steht heute Abend in der Startaufstellung neben ihm. Platz drei sicherte sich Markus Pommer vor Steindl und Monien. Damit lagen gleich vier Rookies in den Top fünf.
Nico Monien aus dem Team Zettl Sportsline stand eigentlich schon als Pole-Mann des zweiten Qualifyings fest, doch in wirklich allerletzter Sekunde schnappte ihm Vanthoor den Platz an der Spitze weg. Kurz vor Schluss war Dusseldorp in den Shell-Esses abgeflogen und hatte eine längere Gelbphase ausgelöst. Kaum war die Strecke wieder freigegeben, griff Vanthoor an und lag auf Pole-Kurs. Doch im letzten Sektor kam er mit dem Hinterreifen in den Dreck - die Runde war kaputt und die Uhr stand auf ″0″. Doch der Belgier war, von vielen unbemerkt, noch rechtzeitig über die Linie gefahren. Er nutzte seine Chance, behielt die Nerven und verdrängte mit einer Zeit von 1:21.925 Minuten Monien auf Rang zwei. Rafael Suzuki startet morgen von Platz drei.
In der ATS Formel-3-Trophy fuhr der Ukrainer Sergey Chukanov zwei Mal die schnellste Zeit vor seinem neuen Teamkollegen, dem Finnen Jesse Krohn (Arttech F24 OPC-Challenge). Rang drei sicherte sich der Deutsche Francesco Lopez (Dallara F304 Opel). Mika Vähämäki (Dallara F304 Opel) war im ersten Qualifying abgeflogen und konnte an der zweiten Session nicht teilnehmen.
Laurens Vanthoor: "Nach dem ersten Qualifying war ich ziemlich sauer. Ich war zwei Mal auf einer schnellen Runde und bin zwei Mal geblockt worden. Das hat mir meine Chance auf die Pole Position ruiniert. In der zweiten Session gab es viele Gelbphasen. Ich habe die allerletzten Minuten genutzt nochmal anzugreifen. Zum Glück hat es auf den letzten Drücker noch für die Pole gereicht. Das war das schwerste Qualifying, das ich bisher erlebt habe."
Stef Dusseldorp: "Das erste Qualifying verlief super - ich freue mich riesig über meine erste Formel-3-Pole. Jetzt hoffe ich, dass mein Team das Auto wieder reparieren kann. Das zweite Qualifying war sehr hart, da viel Verkehr auf der Strecke war. In den Shell Esses habe ich das Heck verloren und bin eingeschlagen."
Markus Pommer: "Ich bin mit Startplatz drei für das erste Rennen sehr zufrieden. Es war viel Verkehr und ich habe nur eine wirklich freie Runde erwischt. Mein Ziel ist es heute aufs Podium zu kommen. Im zweiten Qualifying sind wir etwas später raus. In meiner ersten schnellen Runde musste ich überholen und dann kam die lange Gelbphase."
Rafael Suzuki: "Über das Ergebnis aus dem ersten Qualifying bin ich sehr enttäuscht. Wir hatten die Pace ganz nach vorne zu fahren. Aber ich bin die ganze Zeit aufgehalten worden. Im Rennen muss ich alles geben, um nach vorne zu kommen. Das zweite Zeittraining war ganz okay. Meine Runden waren nicht perfekt, da mir ein paar kleine Fehler unterlaufen sind. Doch ich denke, dass heute keiner wirklich fehlerfrei war, da die Strecke nicht einfach war."
Nico Monien: "Der Anfang der ersten Session lief ganz gut. Dann kam ich rein zum Reifenwechsel, doch als ich wieder rausfuhr, begann einige Gelbphasen. Später habe ich noch eine gute Runde erwischt und bin für Platz fünf qualifiziert. Im zweiten Qualifying haben wir zu Beginn noch abgewartet. Auf der Strecke habe ich noch gute Runden hingelegt. Leider hat es nicht für die Pole-Position gereicht. Aber es ist toll in der ersten Startreihe zu stehen. Die Tendenz geht weiter nach oben und wir sind dran an der Spitze."
Francesco Lopez: "Der neue Qualifying-Modus war noch ungewohnt. Deswegen war es zu Beginn des ersten Qualifyings noch etwas turbulent. Dazu kamen in beiden Sessions noch einige Gelbphasen. Besonders Vähämäki ist genau zu dem Zeitpunkt abgeflogen, an dem schnelle Runden gefahren werden. Aber ich bin mit meinen Positionen nicht unzufrieden. Die erste Kurve in Oschersleben ist dafür bekannt, dass einiges passieren kann."

La Subida al Castell de Son Mas abrirá el Campeonato de Baleares de Montaña 2009
GABI ARRABAL SALDRÁ A DEFENDER EL TÍTULO

Sa Pobla, (Illes Balears, España) Viernes 19 de junio de 2009.
Con la Subida al Castell de Son Mas, que se disputará este fin de semana, da comienzo
la temporada de montaña 2009. Un año más los objetivos de Gabi Arrabal pasan por
estar entre los primeros clasificados en esta complicada subida en cuesta, y a la vez
tiene en mente pensar en el campeonato para intentar revalidar el título conseguido el
pasado año.
Este año el piloto de la Escudería Mallorca Competició competirá al volante del Bango
BRC 05 que tantas alegrías le dio la segunda mitad de la temporada 2008. Solucionados
los problemas de la última carrera de circuito con la instalación eléctrica, el monoplaza
se ha preparado para conseguir la máxima efectividad sobre el trazado de la carretera
de Andratx a Estellencs. El recorrido de la prueba andritxola es muy técnico y complicado
con un asfalto muy delicado que no permitirá errores a los participantes. Un total de
veintisiete pilotos han formalizado su inscripción para la XIII Subida al Castell de Son
Mas. El piloto pobler saldrá en último lugar al llevar el dorsal número 1 en las puertas
de su monoplaza, honor que le corresponde como vigente campeón.
La subida se disputará en la jornada del sábado y el domingo. El sábado a las 15:00
horas se cerrará la carretera al público, una hora más tarde se iniciará la primera ascensión
de entrenos, mientras que sobre las 17:30 horas está prevista la segunda tanda de entrenos.
El domingo a las 9:30 horas se reiniciará la prueba con la tercera y última subida de
entrenos. La ascensión de carrera está prevista para las 11:30 horas y una hora más tarde
se procederá a la publicación de resultados y posterior entrega de premios en el Salón
de actos del Ajuntament de Andratx.
Los comentarios de Gabi Arrabal antes de afrontar su primera carrera de montaña de
esta temporada son:
"Tengo muchas ganas de volver a competir en montaña, es la especialidad que más me
atrae, además me podré estrenar con el Bango BRC 05 en esta prueba e intentar bajar
el registro del pasado año. Creo que puedo estar arriba, el coche va genial, pero hay que
tener muy en cuenta a los rivales, esta subida es muy técnica y un fallo se paga caro,
espero que la temperatura no sea excesiva, una buena hidratación será vital para afrontar
con garantias esta carrera."

Italian masters tricky wet conditions in Brno

Nicola De Marco took pole position for the first race of the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship in Brno tomorrow (Saturday 20 June).

Mikhail Aleshin held the top spot in the early part of the session, before Edoardo Piscopo took over. De Marco also held the provisional pole for a brief time before a late flurry of changes in the final 15 minutes. Tobias Hegewald and Carlos Iaconelli held the top two spots at one stage, but both dropped down the order as De Marco returned to take pole in the closing stages.

Mirko Bortolotti guided his car to second on the grid to complete an Italian 1-2, whilst Finnish driver Henri Karjalainen completed the top three after making impressive progress throughout the day. After dominating the opening two practice sessions, Mikhail Aleshin will have been disappointed to have dropped to fourth as the chequered flag fell. Philipp Eng and Edoardo Piscopo rounded out the top six, with Carlos Iaconelli seventh and Tobias Hegewald eighth – still within one second of De Marco’s pole time.

Andy Soucek and Robert Wickens rounded out the top ten. Championship leader Wickens was unable to threaten the ultimate pace setters, but he will expect to fight for points during tomorrow’s 22-lap race.
The session had to be red flagged halfway through following spins for Jens Höing and Jason Moore, and when Henry Surtees went off into the gravel with two minutes remaining on the clock, the red flag brought qualifying to a close. Armaan Ebrahim, Natacha Gachnang and Alex Brundle were others that fell foul of the conditions - all three endured spins during the session.
Rain continued to fall throughout qualifying, though not as heavily as during today’s free practice sessions.

Nicola De Marco said: “I’m very happy, and I really enjoyed the wet conditions. I’ve worked very hard to get this place, especially after Valencia, so I’m really happy to have come away with such a strong result. I hope to have a good race tomorrow, and then another good qualifying and race on Sunday. I’m not sure whether I should be hoping for rain or not!”

Mirko Bortolotti said: “This is my first time here, so I struggled a bit early on. I am happy with second anyway because I didn’t think after the second session I could be starting on the front row. There is still a long way to go in the season, and there are 25 drivers, so I have 24 rivals not just one. The competition is high, so I’m just happy to start on the front row and I’m looking forward to the race.”

Henri Karjalainen said: “I’m very happy with my position, especially because in Valencia my best in qualifying was 19^th. Coming into Brno I knew I had to concentrate more on qualifying and post good laps, and I am very happy that it worked. I was certainly pushing hard, and we also made some improvements to the car which made it feel really good. I knew in the rain I could finish anywhere, so I just pushed hard and I’m very happy to be third.”

Volles Starterfeld in Oschersleben

Der ATS Formel-3-Cup trifft bei seinen Saisonläufen sieben und acht in der Motorsportarena Oschersleben auf ein sehr internationales und professionelles Umfeld im Rahmen der FIA GT Championship. Ein Fahrerlager voller Sportwagen, die nicht nur die Fans, sondern auch die Formel-3-Piloten begeistern. Ferrari, Audi R8, Corvette, Viper, Porsche und noch viele andere Marken und Fahrzeuge sind vertreten. Genau die richtige Plattform für die jungen Formel-3-Piloten sich zu präsentieren.
Der Freitag verlief für Teams und Fahrer noch recht ruhig: es stand nur das einstündige freie Training auf dem Programm. Am Ende sicherte sich der Tabellenführer Laurens Vanthoor in 1:21.850 Minuten die schnellste Zeit. Der Belgier hat geteilte Erinnerungen an die Strecke in der Magdeburger Börde: beim Saisonauftakt im April konnte er das erste Rennen gewinnen. Lauf zwei beendete er ohne Punkte. Der Brasilianer Rafael Suzuki kann mit Rang zwei den Aufwärtstrend im Team Performance Racing bestätigen. Nach einem eher mäßigen Start in die Saison sollen nun weitere Podiumsplätze folgen. Die drittschnellste Zeit fuhr der Belgier Stef Dusseldorp (alle Dallara F307 Volkswagen). Der Rookie aus dem Team Van-Amersfoort-Racing hatte sich hier in Oschersleben bereits im zweiten Saisonlauf seinen ersten Formel-3-Sieg gesichert.
Bester Deutscher auf Position vier wurde Markus Pommer aus dem Team Zettl Sportline, vor der Schweizerin Rahel Frey, die momentan auf dem dritten Tabellenplatz liegt. Beim Saisonauftakt schaffte sie hier den Sprung aufs Podest und wird versuchen ihren Erfolg zu wiederholen, um den Anschluss an die Spitze zu halten. Eine gute Leistung zeigte Gary Hauser (alle Dallara F307 Mercedes), der sich auf Rang sechs platzieren konnte. Fleißigster Pilot am Freitagmittag war der Russe Vladimir Semenov, der den 3,6960 Kilometer langen Kurs 36 Mal umrundete.
Neu im ATS Formel-3-Cup sind der Indonesier Zahir Ali (Dallara F307 Mercedes) und der Finne Jesse Krohn (Arttech F24 OPC-Challenge). Ali startet neben Frey im Team von Jo Zeller. Krohn greift dieses Wochenende im Team STROMOS ART-LINE für Dominik Schraml ins Lenkrad.

Last year’s Belgium Ypres Rally winner Freddy Loix (Peugeot 207 S2000) holds a lead of just under five seconds at the overnight halt, from IRC series leader Kris Meeke. "I’m just trying to drive carefully and keep my concentration," said Loix at the finish. "I know this event quite well but it’s still so easy to make a mistake."
However, Meeke – the winner of the last two IRC rounds - has kept pace with Loix to hold a strong second place at the overnight halt.  Meeke declared himself ’surprised’ to be trading fastest times with his veteran Belgian rival on home soil.
"I’m just driving my own stages," Meeke said. "I’m very surprised to be going so quickly, and I knew that if I came back into service leading the rally I’d be for the high jump! I don’t want to beat Freddy."
Having passed Loix for the championship lead with victory at the last IRC round in the Azores, Meeke has pledged to go carefully and ensure that he doesn’t throw away his chances on the notorious roads in Flanders. Nevertheless he and the Belgian WRC winner have pulled away from the chasing pack on every stage, with the gap standing at 4.9s at the overnight halt.
Czech asphalt ace Jan Kopecky trails them by 8.4s in his factory Skoda Fabia S2000, with a charging Giandomenico Basso clawing back time for Abarth in the battle for fourth, ahead of Kopecky’s teammate Juho Hanninen by 0.2s.
Both the BF Goodrich Peugeot being guest-driven by Thierry Neuville and Britain’s other leading entry in the event, the new Proton Satria of Guy Wilks, joined the high-profile retirements. 
The 21-year-old Belgian talent crashed out of the event on the sixth stage, Lille-Eurometropole 2 after a strong performance through the day.  Wilks, who was struggling with an over-eager engine temperature warning and without the ideal gear ratios because of homologation issues, went off the road on SS5.  The Skoda Belgium entry of former WRC winner Francois Duval crashed out a few hundred metres from the start of SS1. Peugeot’s Nicolas Vouilloz also hit trouble, damaging the front of his car with an off on the opening stage. "We were going fast, hit a bump and we spun quite fast," he said. The Frenchman dropped to 59th at the end of the stage but recovered to set the fifth fastest time on the second and third stages.
Bernd Casier, making his debut with the Abarth factory team, was delayed by a puncture on the final stage. Meanwhile, Dutch driver Marcel Piepers is in the provisional lead of the IRC 2WD Cup after a faultless performance.
The rally restarts at 12:30 tomorrow with an intense 10-stage run to the finish.
