ROUNDS 11 & 12 - BRNO
RACE 1 & 2 REPORT

BMW ITALY-SPAIN TAKE ALL IN BRNO

The BMW Team Italy-Spain won both the WTCC races at Brno, proving once again that they are the outfit to beat when the series visits the Czech Republic. Figures say it all, with four victories out of the six latest WTCC races on the Masaryk circuit.
Alessandro Zanardi encored his Race 1 success from last year, while his young Spanish team-mate, Sergio Hernández collected the baton in the second race and claimed his first WTCC victory.
BMW claimed a double win as it was expected, however the final outcome was not as rewarding as the German manufacturer hoped in terms of championship points.
As a matter of fact BMW’s best-placed drivers - Augusto Farfus and Andy Priaulx - collected only one point (Priaulx in Race 2), which enabled SEAT Sport’s Yvan Muller to further stretch his lead margin: 10 points ahead of Gabriele Tarquini, with Farfus a further two points behind.
As a partial consolation BMW cut the gap from SEAT to 8 points in the Manufacturers’ Championship.
Félix Porteiro, of Proteam Motorsport, dominated the Independents’ field, scoring a massive 44 points over the weekend and building a 26-point lead in the Trophy.
The championship will resume in Porto, Portugal, on July 5th, for rounds 13 and 14.

Bridgestone Motorsport’s British Grand Prix Report

Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel scored his second race win of the season after he used a two stop, soft – soft – hard tyre strategy to win a fast-paced British Grand Prix in cool and cloudy conditions at Silverstone.

BRITISH GRAND PRIX F1/2009 - SILVERSTONE 21/06/2009
Vettel finished fifteen seconds ahead of team-mate Mark Webber, who used the same strategy. The final podium position went to Brawn GP Formula 1 Team driver Rubens Barrichello, who used a softhard- soft tyre strategy. Bridgestone’s soft tyre proved to be the superior race tyre here for most competitors, giving a faster lap time than the hard, and giving good consistency too.
Hiroshi Yasukawa – Director of Bridgestone Motorsport, says
“Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel for his second race win of the season and Red Bull Racing on their second one-two of the year. Silverstone has a great atmosphere and we have seen a fantastic crowd here throughout the weekend in what is both a very important market for Bridgestone and an important base for our Bridgestone Motorsport operation.”
Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says
“Today we saw very hot pace from the Red Bulls in the cool weather conditions as they used the Bridgestone hard and soft tyre s very well indeed. The best lap times of both Red Bull cars were over half a second faster than anyone else. The soft Bridgestone worked very well, especially after the second stint when there was more rubber down on the track. The hard Bridgestone did take longer to deliver its best lap time and we saw a number of illustrations of this as part of some interesting battles for position. Silverstone helped serve us an exciting fast race here today.”

In 2009, the tyre regulations stipulate that the two dry tyre specifications must be visibly
distinguishable from each other. At the British Grand Prix, the soft compound Bridgestone Potenza tyres were marked with green bands on the sidewalls. The wet weather tyre was also marked with a green line in a groove.

Soucek takes Race Two win in Brno

Andy Soucek claims victory DSC_9024

Spaniard claims maiden F2 victory ahead of Jousse and De Marco

Andy Soucek has won his first FIA Formula Two Championship race in Brno, Czech Republic, this afternoon (Sunday).

Front row starters Henry Surtees and Mikhail Aleshin did not get away from the line, which allowed Nicola De Marco into the lead. Soucek leapt from fifth on the grid up to second after he passed Julien Jousse around the outside at turn one.

The opening lap drama continued at turn two as seven cars were involved in a collision, which left Alex Brundle, Henri Karjalainen, German Sanchez, Pietro Gandolfi and Carlos Iaconelli out of the race. Jens Hoing and Robert Wickens were able to continue, although Wickens later retired.
De Marco dominated much of the race, before making a small mistake and dropping down to fourth on lap ten. The Italian was able to recover from the spin and re-passed Edoardo Piscopo in the closing stages to take the final podium position.

This left Andy Soucek to march on to his maiden F2 victory after a faultless display. Julien Jousse scored his first Formula Two podium, taking second at the finish, whilst it was a bittersweet moment for De Marco - the Italin scored his first F2 podium, but had looked certain to win race until his spin.

Piscopo held fourth ahead of Miloš Pavlović and Armaan Ebrahim who rounded out the top six. The fight for seventh was intense as Sebastian Hohenthal, Tobias Hegewald, Kazim Vasiliauskas and Philipp Eng swapped places at will. Contact was made between Hohenthal and Iaconelli, which dropped the Swede down to 12th. Hohenthal also later collided with championship leader Mirko Bortolotti - the Italian’s race ending in the gravel. It was Hegewald who went on to steal seventh, with Vasiliauskas clinching the final championship point.

Amazingly, 17 drivers have already scored points after just four rounds of the championship. All three Red Bull Junior drivers failed to finish the second race at Brno, but they still hold a 1-2-3 lead in the championship. Bortolotti leads Wickens by one point, with Aleshin a further four points back. Impressive results for Julien Jousse and Andy Soucek have thrust the pair back into contention towards the top of the standings, having scored 16 and 15 points respectively.

Andy Soucek said: “It was a great race. I made a good start and I was going to attack Nicola but it was too risky. I had a good fight with Julien but to get my first win was amazing. The next round at Spa Francorchamps is my favourite track, so I hope to fight for podiums or even a victory there.”

Julien Jousse said: “The race was tricky at the beginning with the cars stopped in front of me, but I got a good start anyway. The fight with Andy was very hard but it was good points for the championship and I hope I can continue like that.”

Nicola De Marco said: “I made a mistake and I am very disappointed. I had a good start and I was quick throughout the race. Normally I do not make mistakes but I did in this moment. I lost out on victory, but at least it is my first podium in Formula Two."

Bridgestone Motorsport British GP2

Alberto Valerio (Piquet GP)  and Pastor Maldonado (ART Grand Prix)  both secured race wins in the fourth round  of  the  Bridgestone-supported  GP2  Series  at  Silverstone,  using  Bridgestone’s  medium  specification racing slick. Known as one of the fastest circuits currently in Formula One, Silverstone offers GP2 drivers the opportunity to experience the high-speed Copse corner and section through Maggotts, whilst also demanding a car set- up and driving style that can optimise tyre performance during the slow complex in the last sector. In Saturday’s action packed 36 lap feature race, Brazilian driver Valerio took his maiden GP2 victory having started from second on the grid behind Romain Grosjean (Barwa Addax Team). Lucas di Grassi (Fat Burner Racing Engineering) finished second, with Nico Hulkenberg from ART Grand Prix crossing the line in third, also adding a point for fastest lap to his championship tally. Bridgestone’s  tyre  degradation  has  been  lower  than  expected  and less compared to last year, suggesting teams have adapted their car set-up well to manage the medium compound. Sunday’s  24  lap  sprint  race  was  won  by  Venezuelan  driver  Maldonado,  his  second  sprint  race  win  of  the season. Andreas Zuber (FMSI) and Karun Chandhok (Ocean Racing Technology) finished second and third, with Maldonado being awarded fastest lap. Grosjean takes back the lead of the drivers’ championship on 40 points, ahead of team-mate Vitaly Petrov on 33. Maldonado is in third with 26 points.  Barwa Addax Team leads the teams’ championship with 73 points from ART Grand Prix on 52. Fat Burner Racing Engineering is in third position with 24. The fifth round of the GP2 Series will be held at the Nurburgring on July 11-12, this time on Bridgestone’s soft compound GP2 racing slick. Quote from Hirohide Hamashima - Director of Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development “The GP2 teams have done a good job in studying last year’s data from Silverstone, and as a result we had a  very  entertaining  feature  race  in  GP2.  They  have  been using the same compound as last year and the level of degradation has been reasonable, certainly less than 2008 and reducing over the weekend too. The lower  degradation  could  be  due  to  improved  car  set-up  and  the  drivers  recognising  how  to  maintain  their tyres and, of course, circuit improvement due to good weather conditions. Well done to Alberto Valerio on his  first  GP2  win  and  to  Pastor  Maldonado  on  his  second  victory  this  season.  Overall  we  have  seen  an improvement in lap times this weekend compared to last year, and we are pleased with the performance of the medium compound at Silverstone.”

Kein gutes Rennen erlebte Stef Dusseldorp (Dallara F307 Volkswagen).

MEEKE WINS AGAIN IN BELGIUM!

Peugeot UK driver Kris Meeke has won his third consecutive IRC event by claiming victory on his first participation in the Belgium Ypres Rally, round five of the IRC series. The momentous win has promoted Meeke to a six-point lead in the standings over Peugeot Belgium driver Freddy Loix: the winner of the Belgium Ypres Rally last year.
Meeke and Loix were involved in a battle for the lead from the very beginning of the rally, trading fastest stage times. Over the course of the 16-stage event, Meeke won eight stages while Loix won seven. Meeke edged ahead after SS12, but Loix - a five-time winner of the Belgium Ypres Rally - claimed to have more speed in reserve. His challenge evaporated on the following stage though, when the Belgian picked up a puncture that dropped him to fourth place. He refused to give up and eventually finished third, maintaining second place in the championship.
The only other person to challenge the two leaders was Skoda driver Jan Kopecky, who was in the top three from the very first day. The only problem that the Czech encountered was a motorcyclist who rode into him on a road section before SS10, but fortunately there were no serious consequences. Following Loix’s puncture Kopecky moved up into second place, where he remained to the finish in order to graduate to third place overall in the championship standings.
Kopecky’s team mate Juho Hanninen was third up until the final stage, where he too punctured a tyre and dropped down to fifth. Nonetheless, the popular Finn scores his first points of the year. Hanninen’s misfortune benefitted local driver Pieter Tsjoen, who claimed fourth at the finish in a privately-run Peugeot 207 S2000.
The battle for sixth resulted in one of the closest finishes in the history of the IRC. Luxembourg driver Gilles Schammel, driving a Peugeot 207 S2000, finished just 0.1 seconds ahead of Dutchman Jasper van den Heuvel, at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer.
The final point was claimed by Abarth’s Giandomenico Basso, who lost fourth place on the very final stage after picking up a puncture on the same rock that caused a problem for Hanninen. Basso’s Abarth team mate Bernd Casier eventually finished 13th after being delayed by a gearbox problem and punctures: a constant risk on the challenging Belgian asphalt.
This notoriously tricky event, which is renowned in the world of international rallying, claimed some high-profile victims: most notably Francois Duval, making a guest appearance in a privateer Skoda Fabia S2000. The Belgian’s rally lasted just a few hundred metres before he skated off the road on SS1. Nicolas Vouilloz, the reigning IRC champion, also endured a difficult opening stage on Thursday: he went wide on a corner and heavily damaged the front of his Peugeot 207 S2000. The Frenchman was attempting to make his way back up the leaderboard on the second day when he got stuck behind the similar car of Michal Solowow, which had been slowed by a puncture, and went off whilst trying to get past it.
The IRC 2WD Cup was won by Dutchman Marcel Piepers, driving a Honda Civic Type R. Piepers stamped his authority over the event, but second place for Frenchman Denis Millet was enough to give the Frenchman the joint lead of the IRC 2WD Cup standings. Another Honda, driven by Martijn Braat, was third – usefully boosting the Japanese manufacturer’s haul in the IRC 2WD Cup constructors’ standings.

QUOTES
"I never thought for a minute that I could be in a position to win here, so to be on the top step of the podium on such a prestigious event is a dream come true for me. I think this is certainly the biggest moment of my career to date. Everyone knows the reputation of this rally: victory here feels very special. But it takes more than one person to make a race, and it’s been fantastic to have such a fight, with just tenths of a second separating us all. I think this weekend is the most fun I’ve ever had behind the wheel."
-Kris Meeke, Peugeot UK, Winner
"Second place is a very good result for us, particularly as we had the accident with the motorcyclist today, which was not a nice feeling as it distracted us. Luckily everyone is OK, but it is not a nice thing to happen on a rally. I tried as best as I could, but I think this result is a real testimony to just how good our car is. I’d like to thank our entire team: we have had two second places now and we are third in the championship, which is a good sign that we are making progress."
- Jan Kopecky, Skoda Motorsport, Second
"Of course it’s a shame for everyone that we had the puncture, as before it was a really great fight with Kris. I tried not to push my hardest all the time, because this is not the sort of rally where you can take big risks, but in the end it was a really close battle between the two of us. The most important thing in any sport is to have good competition, and we certainly had that all weekend."
-Freddy Loix, Peugeot Belgium, Third
THE NEXT EVENT
By contrast to the flat-out asphalt roads of Belgium, the IRC moves next to the gravel stages of Rally Russia. The Russian event, now in its third year of participation in the IRC, is based as always in the city of Vyborg, not far from the Finnish border.
Unsurprisingly, the roads have quite a lot in common with those that feature on the legendary Rally Finland, rewarding bravery and commitment above all else. The Rally Russia takes place from July 9-11, with a ceremonial start in the beautiful city of St Petersburg.
