Soucek sets the Donington Park pace

Championship leader out in front during official test session

FIA Formula Two Championship leader Andy Soucek has set the ultimate pace during an official test session at Donington Park today (Tuesday).

After nearly four hours of potential running, Soucek set a time of 1:23.053s during the closing moments of the final afternoon session. "Today was a good day," the Spaniard enthused. "We made progress with the car, and came away with a very good time compared to the rest of the field. We tried a lot of things with the set up and finally ended up with a great car, but there is still work to do.
"It wasn’t really a surprise to set such a good time as we were very quick in the morning on old tyres, but for sure it’s not going to be as comfortable for me on the weekend. Everything can still change, but today gives me a lot of confidence before the races and hopefully I can extend my championship lead."
Miloš Pavlović moved into second on his final flying lap of the day, having previously been at the lower end of the top ten.

Julien Jousse set the third quickest time as the majority of drivers improved late on after switching to fresh Avon tyres for the first time. Earlier pace setter Edoardo Piscopo ended up just 0.005s behind Jousse in fourth, whilst Red Bull-backed Mikhail Aleshin rounded out the top five.

Carlos Iaconelli, Sebastian Hohenthal and Mirko Bortolotti were sixth, seventh and eighth respectively, ahead of top Briton Jason Moore. The 20-year-old driver from Bedfordshire impressed on a circuit where he won twice during his 2008 Formula Palmer Audi Championship winning season.

Lithuanian Kazim Vasiliauskas had earlier been one of only two drivers to set a time inside the 1:23s bracket, but he failed to improve during the final session and ended up tenth overall. Vasiliauskas and Bortolotti were the busiest drivers on the day, having completed 77 laps, whilst Natacha Gachnang completed 76.

Previous race winners Tobias Hegewald, Robert Wickens and Philipp Eng will have all been disappointed to have finished outside the top ten in 11th, 14th and 15th respectively, whilst British pair Jolyon Palmer and Alex Brundle were sandwiched between them.

In a largely incident free day of running, there were brief spins for the likes of Germán Sánchez, Pietro Gandolfi and Tom Gladdis.

La Copa Consell de Mallorca termina brillantemente”

El pasado sábado 8 de agosto, en el circuito ubicado en el Polideportivo de Ca’n Picafort, tuvo lugar la
cuarta y última prueba de la Copa Consell de Mallorca de Minicross organizada por el 100 Emocions
Esport Club con la colaboración de la Federación Balear de Motociclismo y el patrocinio del Consell de
Mallorca, Ajuntament de Santa Margalida, Área d’Esports de Ca’n Picafort, Sa Nostra, BP Palmabat y
Cocacola. Al mismo tiempo se celebró el Campeonato de Baleares de Motocross "B", que incluye las
categorías de Minicross y 65 cc, además de la Copa de Baleares de Pit-Bikes y también una prueba
puntuable para el Campeonato de Trial Base, en sus categorías de 50 y 80cc. Una gran cantidad de
público asistió a presenciar esta prueba incluida en el programa de las fiestas de Ca’n Picafort.
COPA CONSELL DE MALLORCA DE MINICROSS
Esta era la carrera que cerraba la primera edición de esta Copa Consell de Mallorca de Minicross, creada
por 100 Emocions para fomentar la participación en la categoría más pequeña del motocross y que
seguramente tendrá continuidad la temporada 2010 aunque con algunas novedades muy interesantes.
La carrera fue muy disputada, ya que el título estaba por decidir entre Juanito Ruano, Jesús Ferreres,
Jordi Portell y José María Carmona, decidiéndose al final a favor de Juan Ruano al vencer claramente
en las dos mangas. Jesús Ferrreres sufría una caída que le retrasaba en la primera manga, perdiendo
así muchas opciones y proclamándose finalmente subcampeón. José María Carmona terminaba tercero
en la carrera y en la general de la Copa, seguido de Jordi Portell, Marc Arjona y José Luis Pérez.
El podio final fue una auténtica fiesta con los preceptivos trofeos y diplomas, además de tres magníficos
cascos para los tres primeros y otros regalos para todos los participantes que hicieron las delicias de
los chavalines y de sus padres, tan sorprendidos como los propios niños.
Por último, 100 Emocions quiere felicitar a todos los participantes y agradecerles tanto a pilotos como
a sus padres y madres su colaboración y sus críticas para ir mejorando carrera tras carrera. Os esperamos a todos en el 2010.
65cc
También disputadísima fue la carrera de 65 cc puntuable para el Campeonato de Baleares, basta con
ver que tan sólo dos puntos separaron a los tres primeros clasificados en la clasificación general.
El ganador absoluto fue Juan José Montiel con 45, seguido de Pau Soler con 44 y Toni Ferrer con 43,
que completaron el podio de esta categoría seguidos de Roy Hidalgo, Guillermo Martí y Alex Vives,
quedándose sin puntuar Ignacio Alcoceba por una caída en la primera manga.
PIT BIKES
Sorpresa en la categoría de Pit Bikes, ya que los dos máximos favoritos, Joan Munar y Joan Pau Segura,
tenían algunos problemas mecánicos durante la carrera que les impedían luchar por la victoria final. Toni
Melis se aprovechaba de esta circunstancia y subía a lo más alto del podio al ganar la primera manga
y ser cuarto en la segunda, acompañado de Joan Pau Segura y el regular Toni Truyols, por delante de
Miguel Bordoy, Alejandro Martínez, Raúl Carrasco, Joan Munar, que venció la segunda serie pero tuvo
que abandonar en la primera y Ángel Moñino.
TRIAL BASE 50 Y 80
Base 50. Nada menos que once pilotos se dieron cita en la novena prueba de la temporada. Tras las
tres vueltas que dieron a las zonas del Polideportivo de Ca’n Picafort, la victoria fue para Joan Cerdá,
que penalizó 15 puntos. La segunda posición fue, a tan sólo 1 punto, para Jordi Crespí, que no pudo
mantener el excelente nivel que demostró en la primera vuelta. Tercera plaza para Jordi Torres, que
también tuvo sus opciones, aunque penalizó en exceso en la primera vuelta. José Luis Pérez fue cuarto,
encabezando un grupo de voluntariosos pilotos que buscan en este campeonato perfeccionar su pilotaje.
Daniel Urrutia, Alejandro Fernández, Jorge López, Juan Uviña, Jordi Font, Fran Martín y Víctor Álvarez
cerraron la clasificación.
Base 80. A pesar de contar con sólo tres inscritos, pudimos presenciar una apasionante lucha entre
Sergi Mesquida y Andreu Reinés, con una alternancia en la cabeza en las tres vueltas. Al final empataron
a puntos (15) siendo la victoria para Mesquida después de realizar el desempate especificado en los
reglamentos. La tercera plaza fue para Adolfo Caballero.

Official test is underway at Donington Park

FIA Formula Two Championship

After a four week mid-season break, the final UK round of 2009 takes place at Donington Park this weekend (15/16 August) and it marks the beginning of the second half of the FIA Formula Two Championship season.

The action gets underway today (Tuesday) as all 24 drivers take part in an official test day at the Derbyshire venue – with nearly four hours of testing running scheduled, today will provide some valuable track time to many drivers who are making their first visit to the future home of the British Grand Prix.

The race for the championship is already proving to be an intense battle as drivers fight for the prize of a full test with the AT&T Williams F1 Team. Andy Soucek currently holds the advantage, but there are a host of talented rivals snapping at his wheels. The Spaniard’s win last time out at Brands Hatch consolidated his place at the top of the standings, but he is closely followed by the Red Bull-backed Canadian driver Robert Wickens and also Austrian Philipp Eng. Wickens has seen an upturn in fortunes in the two most recent F2 events but he has not stood on the top step of the podium since the inaugural round in Valencia, whilst Eng took his maiden victory at Brands Hatch.

A trio of drivers are lying joint fourth in the standings – Julien Jousse, Tobias Hegewald and Mirko Bortolotti will be hoping to relaunch their championship challenge with good results at Donington Park, whilst Mikhail Aleshin and Miloš Pavlović remain in touching distance of the leading pack.

The first half of the F2 season has been extremely close and competitive with five different drivers scoring victories in the opening eight rounds, whilst the podium has already seen ten different visitors. 19 drivers have scored championship points – a statistic made all the more staggering when you consider that F2 follows the Formula One points system of awarding points to the top eight finishers only.  

For the first time this season, both races will take place on the Sunday as F2 headlines the event and spectators are set for an enthralling double-header day of racing. Special 2 for 1 admission tickets are available until Wednesday at midday for just £16 – equivalent to £8 per person – and one lucky advance purchaser will win a pair of exclusive VIP access passes including full hospitality in the F2 race centre and a meet and greet with the next generation of F1 stars. Children under 16 are admitted free.

The main raceday will also include a special tribute to Henry Surtees, who tragically died after an accident during the second F2 race at Brands Hatch in July.

Maria de Villota signs for Atletico Madrid to become first female Superleague Formula racer

As Atletico Madrid prepare for the start of the new La Liga season, the Spanish club has made a significant signing off the pitch by snapping up Maria de Villota to race for the team in Superleague Formula by Sonangol.
Spaniard de Villota will become the first female driver ever to compete in the championship when she makes her series debut in the next round at Estoril on 5-6 September. She will also contest the final two races of the season at Monza on 3-4 October and her home track Jarama on 7-8 November.
“This is the biggest opportunity of my career so far,” said Maria, whose father Emilio raced in F1 in the late seventies and early eighties. “I am from Madrid so it is a huge honour for me to be able to represent Atletico in Superleague Formula.”
The Spanish capital is divided between fans of its two biggest clubs, Atletico and Real, and Maria admits she belongs to the red and white half of the city! “We have two very successful football clubs here in Madrid but I have always been a supporter of Atletico,” she revealed. “They are a club with a huge amount of character and the fans are so loyal and passionate. They always support their team through the good times and the bad.”

Maria will be hoping to count on the backing of the legendary Los Rojiblancos for the remainder of the year, particularly at the Madrid circuit of Jarama for the season-ending Spanish race.
“Jarama is my home track, I live very close by,” she explained. “I can’t wait to race there as I think the Atletico fans will come out and support their team and the race will be a real highlight for me. Spanish people are very passionate about football and motorsport so it should be a fantastic weekend.”
Before then, Maria will take on the famous circuits of Estoril and Monza in the 750hp Superleague Formula by Sonangol car, which she admits is one of the best she has ever raced.
“I tested it last November and it is the most powerful car I have ever driven,” she confirmed. “It is fantastic to drive, with a huge amount of horse power. The V12 engine and its overall look and feel make it very reminiscent of an F1 car. I can’t wait for next month so I can race it.”
Atletico Madrid currently lay ninth in the Superleague Formula by Sonangol League Table, with 120 points from the first three rounds.

Großer Zuschauerandrang in Assen

Zum nun fünften Mal in Folge war der ATS Formel-3-Cup Teil des Rizla Racing Day in Assen, der 2009 sein zehnjähriges Jubiläum feierte. Das einzige Auslandsrennen der schnellsten deutschen Formel-Rennserie gehört gleichzeitig zu den beliebtesten Veranstaltungen im Kalender, immerhin bildet das Sonntagrennen des ATS Formel-3-Cup den zentralen Höhepunkt des Wochenendes. Während sich Freitag und Samstag die Zuschauerzahlen eher verhalten zeigen, bricht traditionell am Sonntag der große Fanansturm los.
Tausende Fans strömen bei freiem Eintritt zum TT Circuit – in diesem Jahr waren es 57.000! Die Veranstalter des Rizla Race Day bieten stets ein attraktives Programm mit Formel-Fahrzeugen, Super-Karts, Tourenwagen und Super-Bikes. Neben der Aktion auf dem Kurs, sorgen Musik, Gewinnspiele, Autogrammstunden, Showakts und zahlreiche, hübsche Promotion-Girls für gute Stimmung.
Beinahe hätte man einen heute sehr berühmten ehemaligen Formel-3-Fahrer in Assen begrüßen dürfen: Michael Schumacher. Er sollte eigentlich im Motorradrennen der Dutch Superbike an den Start gehen. Doch die Vorbereitungen auf sein überraschendes Formel-1-Comeback verhinderten einen Besuch in den Niederlanden.
Aus dem Fahrerlager
Der TT Circuit in Assen gehört zu den zahlreichen Rennstrecke, die Lärmtage einhalten müssen. Pro Tag darf nur eine bestimmte Zeit der Pegel überschritten werden. So standen besonders der Samstag und der Sonntag unter Beobachtung, da an diesen Tagen die meisten Rennen stattfanden. Wäre das Zeitlimit überschritten worden, hätte der Veranstalter die Rennen stoppen müssen. Für den ATS Formel-3-Cup war dies allerdings kein Thema, da die Rennen am frühren Nachmittag terminiert waren.
Van Amersfoort Racing feiert in Assen stets ein viel beachtetes Heimspiel. Wie jedes Jahr besuchen zahlreiche Gäste das niederländische Team – 140 war dieses Mal gekommen. Die konnten sich die Zeit nicht nur im Teamzelt mitten im Fahrerlager vertreiben, Van Amersfoort hatte auch eine exklusive VIP-Lounge angemietet.
Der dritte Platz von Max Nilsson im Samstagrennen kam genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt: bei ihm und seinem Team Swiss Racing waren zahlreiche Gäste aus Schweden zu Besuch.
Bobby Issazadhe, Teamchef von Performance Racing, hatte dieses Wochenende kein Glück. Zuerst stellte die Hebebühne am Lkw ihren Dienst ein, obwohl eine Reparatur wenige Tage zuvor schon einige tausend Euro gekostet hatte, dann beschädigte Zahir Ali auch noch seinen Dallara F307 Volkswagen im ersten Qualifying so schwer, dass er nicht am zweiten Zeittraining teilnehmen konnte.
In seiner Sonntagausgabe berichtete ‚De Telegraaf’ groß über Stef Dusseldorp. Die Bild-Zeitung Hollands, die in einer Auflage von zwei Millionen Exemplaren erscheint, widmete dem ATS Formel-3-Cup eine Story über zwei Seiten.
Aus dem Fahrerfeld
Shirley van der Lof war in Assen das einzige Mädel im Feld. Rahel Frey musste mit Budgetproblemen das Wochenende ausfallen lassen. Van der Lof war in Assen mit einem neuen Monocoque unterwegs. Nach ihrem Überschlag auf dem EuroSpeedway gab’s für das alte Monocoque nur noch eine Abwrackprämie.
Das Team STROMOS ART-LINE war nach dem Lausitzring wieder mit zwei Fahrzeugen am Start. Neben Sergey Chukanov saß erneut Jesse Krohn im Arttech F24. Der Finne war bereits in Oschersleben im Rahmen der FIA GT Meisterschaft für das russische Team an den Start gegangen und konnte dabei sogar die Trophy-Wertung für sich entscheiden. Auch in Assen standen Chukanov und Krohn auf dem Siegerpodest.
Der Fahrer des Wochenendes
Einmal mehr gebührt Laurens Vanthoor diese Ehre. Der Belgier schaffte in Assen sogar die maximale Punkteausbeute: 24 Zähler. Zwei Siege, zwei schnellste Rennrunden und zwei Pole-Positions sprechen eine deutliche Sprache. Vanthoor hat nun bereist 53 Punkte Vorsprung, bei noch sechs ausstehenden Rennen und 72 zu vergebenden Punkten wird der 18-Jährige wohl vorzeitig Meister des ATS Formel-3-Cup 2009.
Der Rückkehrer des Wochenendes
Mit Harald Schlegelmilch kehrte ein bekannter Mann in den ATS Formel-3-Cup zurück. Der Lette fuhr im Team HS Technik Motorsport am Sonntag einen tollen zweiten Platz ein. Schlegelmilch hatte an gleicher Stelle in der Saison 2006 sogar drei Mal gewonnen. Damals war der ATS Formel-3-Cup beim Riza Race Day und auch beim Champcar-Rennen in Assen zu Gast gewesen.
Der Fight des Wochenendes
Am Sonntag erlebten die Besucher einen beinharten Kampf um die zweite Position. Die Viererbande um Adderly Fong, Harald Schlegelmilch, Rafael Suzuki und Stef Dusseldorp kämpfte mit dem Messer zwischen den Zähnen und bot vor allem in der Schlussphase des 30-Minuten-Rennens eine Riesenshow
