Briton leads Afanasiev and Palmer after opening test of 2010

Dean Stoneman enjoyed a superb maiden run in Formula Two to end fastest after the first two official days of testing at Snetterton on 6-7 April.

Stoneman, 19, posted a benchmark time of 58.535s early in the second morning, and remained fastest for the rest of the day despite the best efforts of Sergey Afanasiev and fellow Briton Jolyon Palmer – both of whom finished within one tenth of Stoneman’s time.

Russia’s Afanasiev also set his fastest time during the morning running of the second day, and he ended the test just 0.066s shy of Stoneman’s time. Palmer was a further 0.033s behind Afanasiev, the Briton having topped the timesheets himself after the opening day of the test.

With every Williams JPH1B F2 car being maintained to an exact equal standard the closeness of the field was once again in full evidence, with the top 14 drivers all covered by less than one second and the entire field separated by just over 2.6 seconds.

Behind the lead trio Denmark’s Johan Jokinen set the fourth fastest time ahead of series returnee Armaan Ebrahim, whilst Tom Gladdis rounded out the top six with a best effort little over three tenths of a second off Stoneman.

Seventh to 11th were then separated by less than one tenth, with Mihai Marinescu heading the British duo of Paul Rees and Jack Clarke. Benjamin Bailly rounded out the top ten by the narrowest of margins, the young Belgian’s best effort edging out Will Bratt by just 0.001s.

Philipp Eng confirmed his reputation as a genuine title challenger after topping the timesheets on several occasions during a strong opening day, although he could not quite replicate such form on day two. Elsewhere Nicola De Marco, Ricardo Teixeira and Jose Alonso Liste all enjoyed spells within the top ten.

The two day test also featured one wet session at the end of the final day, with Russia’s Ivan Samarin finishing fastest in the wet running ahead of Nicola De Marco and Jolyon Palmer.

Dean Stoneman said: "I’m happy with today -  I have been concentrating on my own programme, but it is still good to go fastest. We tried out a new tyre just to see where we stood and how they affected the set-up of the car, and it seemed that today’s early conditions were better than yesterday. You don’t really ever know what to expect until the first qualifying session of the first round, but I’m here to win and I’ll certainly be going all out for the championship."

Jolyon Palmer tops the opening F2 test day Briton heads Johan Jokinen and Philipp Eng at Snetterton

19-year-old Jolyon Palmer topped the opening F2 test of 2010, as the young Briton headed both Philipp Eng and Johan Jokinen at Snetterton today (Tuesday).

Palmer set the ultimate pace in the final hour of the day as Eng finally relinquished top spot, which he had held for much of the running. The Austrian tried to respond and became the only driver to dip under the one minute barrier in both the morning and afternoon, but he fell short of Palmer’s effort by just 0.155s.

Danish driver Johan Jokinen completed his rise through the top ten by taking third late on, whilst Dean Stoneman’s morning lap time of 59.951s remained good enough for fourth overall at the finish. Will Bratt – who recently contested the GP2 Asia Series – was a consistent top six runner throughout the day and ended up fifth fastest ahead of Kelvin Snoeks. Dutchman Snoeks improved as the day progressed and eventually set his quickest time on his 99th and final lap.

Belgium’s Benjamin Bailly was seventh, ahead of Sergey Afanasiev – the Russian making progress late on during his first day of driving a Williams JPH1B. 2009 F2 returnees Tom Gladdis and Armaan Ebrahim completed the top ten, whilst Formula Palmer Audi graduate Jose Alonso Liste and F2 debutant Mihai Marinescu finished in 11th and 12th respectively.

Alonso Liste completed an impressive 110 laps during the day – the most of any driver – but it was a positive day for the majority of runners, as more than 1,800 laps and 5,600 kms were clocked during the season’s opening pre-season test day.

Jolyon Palmer said: "It was a good lap – I had the pace for the whole day so it was nice to end on top of the timesheets. Track conditions weren’t perfect but the car certainly feels better than last year. That is two test days that I have topped now so my expectations are certainly changing – hopefully that will continue and that I can be a challenger for the championship."

Philipp Eng said: "I am happy with the day – I was quickest in the morning and also went quick in the afternoon. I had some red flags just after I had put new tyres on the car in the afternoon, but it is not a problem. It is good that we’re up there but really I was not focussing too much on the time. The season is very long so I am concentrating on developing the car further and improving as much as possible."

The field will enjoy a further four hours of running tomorrow (Wednesday) and the Formula Two website will be back with live timing and reports from 9am (UK time).

Lluc Feliu regresa a la montaña con una barqueta Outeda

A poco de empezar la temporada 2010 de Montaña nos van llegando novedades a nuestra redacción, como es el caso de Lluc Feliu que regresa al Campeonato de Baleares de Montaña, y lo hará al volante de una preciosa barqueta Outeda. El piloto mallorquín la adquirió el pasado año y a pesar que no tuvo un buen debut con ella en el Campeonato FBEA de Velocidad

en Circuito, donde acusó problemas de motor desde el primer momento, espera hacer un buen papel en el regional tras haberla puesto a punto.

A finales de 2009 el piloto balear tomó la decisión de sustituir el propulsor Honda alimentado por carburador y montar en su lugar un motor de una Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa de inyección con el que espera poder estar al nivel de las CM.

Los planes de Lluc Feliu pasan por tener totalmente a punto su monoplaza para la Subida a Valldemossa, una cita que se ha recuperado tras muchos años fuera del regional y que en 2010 será la que abra la temporada de montaña.

SILVERSTONE-ROUND 1-SUPERLEAGUE FORMULA

Nach einem gelungenen Qualifyingsamstag startete der Deutsche aus der Pole Position in das erste Rennen. Mit dem fünften und sechsten Platz im ersten und zweiten Rennen qualifizierte er sich für das entscheidende Super Final. Er ging von Platz 3 aus ins Rennen und sicherte sich am Ende den zweiten Platz und 75.000 € Preisgeld.

Rennen 1

Kurz vor dem Start in die Saison machte das typische Wetter auf der Insel Teams und Fahrern zu schaffen. Die Strecke war größtenteils trocken, doch gab es noch nasse Stellen.

In der Startaufstellung begann, wie üblich, der Reifenpoker. Letztendlich entschieden alle Teams, auf Trockenreifen ins Rennen zu gehen, was sich im Laufe des Rennens als richtig herausstellte.

Der fliegende Start war für den Deutschen Max Wissel nicht perfekt. In der ersten Kurve kam er zu weit nach außen und musste seine Führung abgeben. Der Brite Dolby Craig startete von Position 4 und legte einen Blitzstart hin. Er konnte in der zweiten Kurve die Führung übernehmen. Wissel musste sich hinter ihm einreihen. Dolby hatte damit einen Freifahrtsschein und baute schon nach der zweiten Runde seinen Vorsprung auf Wissel aus. In der zweiten Runde erlaubte sich der Deutsche erneut einen Fehler und hatte einen Ausritt ins Grüne. Zurück auf der Strecke musste er sich auf Rang sieben einreihen.

Wissel arbeitete sich wieder nach vorne und lag nach wenigen Runden auf dem fünften Rang. An der Spitze verteidigte Dolby die Führung, mit einem Abstand von 16 Sekunden zum Zweiten. Yelmer Buurman konnte sich an Tappy vorbeischieben und lag somit auf Rang 2.

Während Parente den Briten Tappy immer mehr unter Druck setzte, musste auch Wissel in den Rückspiegel schauen. Martinez Ucha saugte sich immer näher an den Deutschen an. Hinter Martinez hatte sich auch der zweite Spanier, Borja Garcia, im Feld herangefahren. Wissel profitierte letztendlich aus dem spanischen Kampf und behielt Position 5.

Rennen 2

Die Umdrehung der Startaufstellung im zweiten Rennen ließ große Spannung aufkommen. Der Newcomer James Walker startete im zweiten Rennen aus der Pole Position ins Rennen. Direkt gefolgt vom erfahrenen Franzosen Sébastien Bourdais. Tristan Gommendy, Chris van der Drift und Narain Karthikeyan machten die Top 5 komplett. Die Spitzenreiter aus dem ersten Rennen mussten sich ganz hinten anstellen. Max Wissel startete von Rang 12.

Der erfahrene Franzose Sébastien Bourdais ging direkt nach dem Start am Newcomer James Walker vorbei und gab die Führung bis zum Ende des Rennens nicht mehr ab. Chris van der Drift freute sich am Ende des zweiten Rennens über den zweiten Platz.

Der dritte Platz ging an den Australier John Martin, der für Atletico de Madrid startet. Max Wissel beendete das Rennen auf Rang 6. Der Sieger des ersten Rennens, Craig Dolby, arbeitete sich gut durch das Feld und belohnte sich am Ende mit dem vierten Platz.

Das Super Final der Top 6

Nach Aufaddierung der Punkte aus dem ersten und zweiten Rennen ging es für Tottenham Hotpurs, FC Porto, FC Basel, Atletico de Madrid, Olympique Lyonnais und Olympiacos in dieser Reihenfolge in das Super Final.

Craig Dolby startete demnach aus der ersten Startposition und gab diese auch nicht mehr ab. Álvaro Parente ging zunächst am Briten vorbei, hatte dann aber Probleme und wurde bis auf fünften Platz durchgereicht. Wissel sicherte sich von Beginn an Platz 2 und fuhr diesen und 75.000 € Preisgeld ein. Dahinter folgten Chris van der Drift und Sébastien Bourdais auf den Plätzen drei und vier.

Craig Dolby: "Das erste Rennen war großartig. Ich hatte einen super Start und konnte bereits nach der ersten Kurve an Max vorbeigehen. Von da an konnte ich meinen Abstand immer weiter ausbauen und den Sieg nach Hause fahren. Beim zweiten Rennen hat auch alles gepasst und ich beendete das Rennen auf Platz 4. Und dann noch der Sieg im Super Final – fantastisch. Das Team hat einen super Job gemacht und es war ein gelungenes Wochenende."

Max Wissel: "Nach der Pole Position gestern waren natürlich die Erwartungen groß. Die Streckenbedingungen im ersten Rennen waren zu Beginn schwierig. Teilweise war die Strecke noch feucht. Schade, dass ich durch meinen Ausritt Plätze und Zeit verloren habe. Trotz allem ist Platz 5 in Ordnung. Beim zweiten Rennen hatte ich anfangs Probleme mit dem Auto. Runde für Runde kam ich jedoch besser zurecht und sicherte mir Rang 6. Mit dem 2. Platz abschließend beim Super Final bin ich durchaus zufrieden."

Günther Unterreitmeier, Teamchef GU Racing: "Ich bin sehr stolz auf unser Team und das, was wir dieses Wochenende erreicht haben. Max mit der Pole Position gestern und heute mit dem zweiten Platz im Super Final. Chris (van der Drift) hat für sein erstes Rennen in der Superleague Formula auch einen super Job gemacht – Zweiter im zweiten Rennen und Dritter im Super Final. Das war ein zufriedenstellendes Wochenende."

Bridgestone Motorsport’s Malaysia Grand Prix Report

MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX F1/2010 - KUALA LAMPUR 04/04/2010

Sebastian Vettel led his Red Bull Racing team-mate Mark Webber across the line to win a scintillating Malaysian Grand Prix with a soft – hard Bridgestone Potenza tyre strategy at a searing hot Sepang.
The rain which visited the circuit for every afternoon in the build-up to the race remained absent, meaning it was tyre strategies using Bridgestone’s two dry tyres which defined performance, with a good mix of timing and order of use of the hard and soft compounds.

“Today we saw a very exiting race and I am proud of the part that Bridgestone played in this with a good allocation of tyres, as confirmed by the race winner, Sebastian Vettel. Congratulations to Red Bull for their one-two today, and to Mercedes for Nico Rosberg’s third place. It is always a pleasure to visit Malaysia and we have many supporters here. Bridgestone Malaysia celebrated its tenth anniversary around the Grand Prix weekend and they raised over 105,000 Ringgets for their nominated charity – the Global Environment Centre.”
Hirohide Hamashima – Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says
“This was a good and interesting race based around tyre strategies. The hard and soft Bridgestone compounds performed very well, but with distinct characteristics. Those who started with the soft tyre had to stop sooner than those who started with the hard, as the soft had a shorter wear life. The hard allowed drivers to continue pushing, as shown by Mark Webber setting the race’s fastest lap on lap 53 with this tyre. The soft required a more forgiving style to maintain its performance. Drivers were able to use fresh tyres sets in the race, as they did not use these tyres in the wet qualifying yesterday. This meant we saw many fastest race laps as the race progressed, from drivers taking to the track on fresh rubber. Our compounds were able to support a variety of strategies and it was good to see the racing on track between many drivers at different times through the race. Even though the top three drivers used the same strategy, there were strong moves through the field using a hard-soft strategy. So many people predicted rain for this race, but today we did not need wet weather to provide excitement on track.”

Max Wissel sicherte dem FC Basel beim ersten Qualifying der Superleague Formula by Sonangol im britischen Silverstone die Pole Position

SILVERSTONE-ROUND 1-SUPERLEAGUE FORMULA

Das typisch britische Wetter auf der Insel machte das erste Qualifying der Superleague Formula by Sonangol spannend.

Den Qualifyingskrimi der ersten Runde der Superleague Formula entschied der Deutsche Max Wissel für sich. Im Viertelfinale musste er gegen keinen Geringeren, als den ehemaligen Formel-1­Piloten und dreifachen Champ Car Sieger Sébastien Bourdais antreten. Dies brachte den jungen Deutschen allerdings auch nicht aus der Ruhe und er schlug den Franzosen mit knapp sieben Zehnteln. Das Halbfinale und das Finale ließen nicht lange auf sich warten.

Bereits am Freitag fand die Verlosung der Gruppe A und B statt. Max Wissel startete in Gruppe A und war zunächst mit der Gruppenwahl nicht allzu zufrieden. Mit dem Erstplatzierten des freien Trainings Julien Jousse und dem Vorjahressiegerauto des FC Liverpool ist die Qual der Wahl offensichtlich.

Álvaro Parente, der für den FC Porto startet, führte die ganze Zeit überlegen das Feld an. Das FC Basel Bolide von Max Wissel parkte auf dem dritten Platz. Craig Dolby, der gemeinsam mit den Tottenham Hotspur startet sicherte sich Platz 2. Der FC Liverpool, dessen Auto vom Newcomer James Walker gesteuert wird, war zunächst nur auf den hinteren Rängen vorzufinden. Zum Ende der 15-minütigen Session kam der Engländer allerdings in Fahrt und schob sich vor Wissel auf Rang 3. Sein Teamkollege Chris van der Drift drehte am Ende des Qualifyings ebenfalls noch mal auf und hätte sich fast noch vor den Deutschen geschoben. Trotz allem qualifizierte sich Wissel für das Viertelfinale. Der Trainingsschnellste Julien Jousse hatte einen schwarzen Qualifyingssamstag und kam nicht unter die Top 4.

In Gruppe B drehte Sébastien Bourdais mächtig auf und sicherte sich von Beginn an Platz 1. Der Zweitschnellste des freien Trainings, Marcos Martinez Ucha, stellte den Boliden des FC Sevilla direkt hinter dem Franzosen auf Position 2. Dicht gefolgt von einem weiteren Briten, Duncan Tappy, und Yelmer Buurman auf Rang 4. Nach dem Ende der beiden jeweils 15-minütigen Qualifyingsitzungen begann es zu regnen.

Im ersten Viertelfinale suchte sich Max Wissel nicht gerade einen leichten Gegner aus. Sebastién Bourdais lautete sein Knock-out-Gegner. Wissel ging als Erster auf die Strecke und war von Beginn an satte acht Zehntel schneller. Im zweiten Sektor verbesserte er sich nochmals und ließ den ehemaligen Formel-1-Piloten und viermaligen ChampCar Sieger alt aussehen. In den weiteren Viertelfinals qualifizierten sich der FC Porto, der FC Liverpool und die Tottenham Hotspurs.

Beim ersten Halbfinale kam es zum Kopf-an-Kopf-Qualifying zwischen dem Deutschen Wissel und dem Engländer Craig Dolby. Zunächst sah es ganz danach aus als würde der Engländer, der ebenfalls für den britischen Fußballverein Tottenham Spurs an den Start geht, ins Finale schaffen. Im zweiten Sektor verbesserte sich Wissel und am Ende der Runde entschied der Alzenauer die Entscheidung für sich. Das Finale wartete.

Der Gegner lautete Álvaro Parente gemeinsam mit dem FC Porto. Wissel bewies starke Nerven und war am Ende der entscheidenden fliegenden Runde knapp eine halbe Sekunde schneller als Parente. Damit war Max Wissel der Mann des Tages. Er startet im Auto des FC Basel beim ersten Saisonrennen der Superleague Formula in Silverstone von der Pole Position.

Max Wissel, 1. Startposition:"Mit dem heutigen Ergebnis bin ich sehr zufrieden. Es hätte nicht besser laufen können. Mit dem einsetzenden Regen im Viertelfinale hatten wir Glück. Im Regen waren wir bereits im letzten Jahr immer schnell unterwegs. Falls es morgen regnet, ist ein Sieg drin, im Trockenen wird es jedoch schwierig."

Álvaro Parente, 2. Startposition:"Im Großen und Ganzen bin ich zufrieden. Im Kampf um die Pole-Position habe ich im zweiten Sektor leider einen kleinen Fehler gemacht. Dieser kostete mich die Pole-Position."

James Walker, 3. Startposition:"Die Strecke ist fantastisch. Es hat unglaublich Spaß gemacht. Mit dem heutigen Ergebnis kann ich für mein erstes Rennen in der Superleague Formula durchaus zufrieden sein. Falls die Strecke morgen trocken ist, haben wir gute Chancen auf ein vielversprechendes Rennen."

Bridgestone Motorsport’s Saturday Update

 MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX F1/2010 - KUALA LAMPUR 03/04/2010

Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) used Bridgestone’s Intermediate tyre to blast to pole position by a massive 1.3 seconds at a treacherous and wet Sepang circuit for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Webber set a time of 1min 49.327secs for his second-ever pole and first of 2010. He will start tomorrow’s race alongside Mercedes GP Petronas F1 Team driver Nico Rosberg, who used Bridgestone’s Wet tyre to go second fastest. Webber was also fastest in the earlier practice session, using the soft compound for a 1min 33.542secs in dry conditions.
Q&A with Hirohide Hamashima – Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development
What was significant about today’s running?
“The weather and timing of when to go out on track were both very important today in qualifying, and this is best illustrated by the grid we will see for tomorrow’s race. The weather was very variable and it was difficult to make the correct decision for when to go out on track and which tyre to use. Mark Webber made a very good call for his pole position. Both the Intermediate and wet tyre worked well in the conditions today and the cross-over between the two was around where we expected. If we have weather like this tomorrow, being on the correct tyre for the conditions will make all the difference.”
What are the tyre strategy considerations for tomorrow’s race?

“As qualifying was held in wet conditions all drivers are free to choose which tyre they will use to start the race. We have gained good data of both dry tyres and the soft is quicker and will work best when the cars are lighter. This means we would expect many to start on the hard tyre if the race starts in dry conditions. If it is wet at the start, then it is very difficult to say, as it depends how wet the track becomes, and if there is any standing water. No matter what the conditions I think we will have a very exciting race with the grid line-up on this challenging Sepang circuit.”

Jousse fastest in Silverstone free practice

Superleague Formula by Sonangol 2010 kicked off in anger at Silverstone today as the opening free practice sessions of the new season got underway.

And it was AS Roma’s Julien Jousse who had the honour of drawing the new campaign’s first blood after recording the fastest time during a second session that included the day’s only dry running.

The Frenchman, who marked his Superleague Formula debut with a podium at Monza last season, lapped Silverstone’s Grand Prix Circuit in 1m36.819s to see off Sevilla’s new Spanish signing Marcos Martinez by 0.254sec.

The championship’s newest club Bordeaux celebrated its debut appearance with the third fastest time, although their ex-F1 driver Franck Montagny ended the session nearly two seconds slower than countryman Jousse.

One of last season’s championship challengers Max Wissel was next up for FC Basel, ahead of Olympique Lyonnais’ winter signing Sebastien Bourdais, local favourite Craig Dolby and Tottenham Hotspur, PSV Eindhoven’s Narain Karthikeyan and FC Porto’s Alvaro Parente.

Chris van der Drift (Olympiacos) and Tristan Gommendy (Galatasaray) completed the top ten with reigning champions Liverpool finishing 11th courtesy of their Superleague Formula newcomer James Walker.

The day’s morning session saw Dolby go fastest, although his 1m46.585s effort in damp conditions was nearly ten seconds shy of Jousse’s lunchtime pace.

Afternoon practice meanwhile turned into a total washout after a heavy downpour throughout the 35 minutes of scheduled running put paid to any meaningful track time. Two drivers confident enough to try their luck however were Jousse and Corinthians’ Robert Doornbos, although both ended up undamaged in the gravel trap.

The draw for tomorrow’s qualifying session threw up a number of tasty ties with last season’s championship top two and domestic rivals Liverpool and Spurs drawn together in Group A, while both French clubs – Lyon and Bordeaux – will also face each other in Group B.

Test’s MNL – Montmeló y Albacete

En unas semanas dará comienzo la temporada más ambiciosa de la Escudería Mallorca New Limit, en la que participará con dos de sus pilotos, Angel Poyatos y Alfonso Ho, en el Campeonato de España de Velocidad (CEV), en las categorías de 125GP y Stock Extreme, mientras que Miquel Pons lo hará con la MIR PreGP125 en el MotoDes.

Y para que llegar de la mejor manera posible, además de los entrenamientos rutinarios que realizan en el RennArena (Llucmajor), toda la estructura del MNL se trasladará durante este próximo fin de semana (Semana Santa) del 2 al 5 de abril, a dos de los circuitos que serán escenario de alguna de las carreras del 2010.

El viernes y el sábado, en el Circuito de Catalunya (Montmeló) será el turno de Angel Poyatos y su nueva moto, una Aprilia RSW 125 GP 2006′, con la que espera clasificarse y optar a entrar entre las diez primeras posiciones en cada carrera. Se trara de un ambicioso objetivo, pero al alcance de este joven piloto, por pilotaje y también por moto, ya que esta misma Aprilia fue una de las motos punteras de la temporada 2009, consiguiendo unos extraordinarios resultados.

El domingo y el lunes la Escudería se trasladará a Albacete, incorporándose a los test’s Alfonso Ho y Miquel Pons. Alfonso, que ya está muy recuperado de la lesión del dedo meñique de la mano derecha y de la operación de Síndrome Compartimental en ambos brazos, retomará el contacto con su Yamaha R1, con la que participará en en CEV en Stock Extreme.

Miquel Pons seguirá con su adaptación a la MIR PreGP125, una moto muy competitiva pero que precisa un trabajo de preparación muy riguroso.

Angel completará un fin de semana agotador, con el fin de llegar completamente adaptado a la Aprilia RSW 125GP.

WTCC TO RESUME IN ONE MONTH TIME

Following the cancellation of the season’s second event in Mexico the FIA WTCC is looking forward to resuming in Marrakech on May 2nd.
This will be the second time the championship has visited Morocco with its fast 4.5-km circuit winding along the boulevards of the Agdal hotel district, in the Southern outskirts of Marrakech.
Compared to last year, when it was inaugurated, bringing international auto racing back to Morocco after half-a-century, the racetrack has been slightly modified. The two chicanes on the long Avenue Mohammed VI straight have been redesigned to make them faster and safer.

WTCC CRUZE EXHIBITED IN NEW YORK
The Chevrolet Cruze racing car that takes part in the FIA World Touring Car Championship is currently being exhibited for the first time to the USA public.
The white-and-blue machine is placed in the centre of the stage of the Chevrolet stand at the New York International Autoshow that opened on Thursday, April 2nd at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the 11th Avenue, Manhattan. The show will go on until Sunday, April 11th.
The exhibition of the WTCC Cruze is part of the promotional actions organised for the launch of the Chevrolet’s saloon to the American market.

Superleague Formula by Sonangol eröffnet Saison in Silverstone

Nach einer langen Winterpause geht es an diesem Wochenende endlich in die langersehnte Saison 2010 der Superleague Formula by Sonangol. Das Erwachen der V12-Motoren in der schnellsten Champions League Europas findet in Silverstone statt.

Die mit der Leidenschaft des Fußballs verbundene Rennserie geht mit vielen Änderungen in die neue Saison. Fünf Millionen Preisgeld, zwölf Rennen und neue Clubs sind einige davon. Was bleibt sind die unerbittlichen Wettkämpfe und heißen Duelle.

Die Strecke in Silverstone hat auch so einiges zu bieten – die Hochgeschwindigkeitsstrecke ermöglicht dem Superleague Formula Boliden, sich von seiner besten Seite zu zeigen. Das Push-to-pass-System und die geringere Anpresskraft erlauben den Piloten enge Fights. Durch das komplett verdrehte Startfeld beim zweiten Lauf, muss sich der schnellste Fahrer im Feld seinen Weg nach vorne bahnen. Spannung garantiert – bis zum Schluss.

Und nicht nur das – auch eine Reihe Weltklassefahrer, wie die ehemaligen Formel-1-Fahrer Sebastien Bourdais, Robert Doornbos und Frank Montagny, nehmen den Kampf um die Meisterschaft in der Superleague Formula in diesem Jahr auf.

Großbritannien hofft an diesem Wochenende, Siege der Heimmannschaften, des FC Liverpool und Tottenham Spur, feiern zu können. Das Cockpit beim Vorjahressieger FC Liverpool sicherte sich der aus New Jersey stammende Brite James Walker. Der Vizemeister der letzten Saison, Craig David, steuert, genau wie im letzten Jahr, den Tottenham Spur-Boliden.

Das englische Duo kann die Saisoneröffnung kaum erwarten.

James Walker, Liverpool FC:"Ich freue mich sehr auf mein Heimrennen in Silverstone. Schon im letzten Jahr wurde ich hier Zweiter in der Renault World Series. Und ich denke, dass der 750 PS-Bolide meinem Fahrstil zugute kommt. Die Unterstützung der Fans ist sicher ein Vorteil. Ich kann es kaum erwarten."

"Der Kampf zwischen mir und Craig wird ein harter. Wir kennen uns abseits der Strecke, allerdings hatten wir bisher noch nicht das Vergnügen, gegeneinander zu fahren. Es wird interessant, da er im letzten Jahr schnell unterwegs war. Allerdings weiß ich nicht wie viel Erfahrung er in Silverstone hat. Ich werde mich bei den Tests gut vorbereiten, so dass wir mit einer guten Basis für das Wochenende gerüstet sind."

Craig Dolby, Tottenham Hotspurs:"Zurück im Auto mit Spurs, und dann noch in Silverstone – das macht es wirklich zu einem sehr speziellen Wochenende für mich. Ich bin die Grand Prix-Strecke zwar noch nicht gefahren, werde aber am Donnerstag genügend Zeit haben, die Strecke zu erkunden. Ich werde alles geben, um mich am Wochenende von der besten Seite zu zeigen."

"Für die Zuschauer wird der Sound der V12-Motoren in Silverstone ein Spektakel, insbesondere auf der Hangar Straight. Aus fahrerischer Sicht ist der schnelle und flüssige Kurs genau das Richtige für mich. Das push-to-pass-System lädt zu vielen Überholmanövern ein. Für das Auftaktrennen erwarte ich mir einen guten Start in die neue Saison."

Die ersten Testfahrten sind für den heutigen Tag angesetzt. Weiter geht es mit dem freien Training am Freitag, gefolgt vom Qualifying am Samstag und den drei Rennen am Sonntag. Im Gegensatz zur letzten Saison werden die ersten beiden Rennen jeweils 45 Minuten dauern. Die Punkte der beiden Rennen werden aufaddiert und entscheiden, welche besten sechs Piloten sich für das Super Final qualifizieren.

Das Rahmenprogramm bietet zudem jede Menge Unterhaltung. Die Dutch Supercar Challenge, SPEED Series, Grand Prix Masters, World Sportscar Masters, Caterham Superlight R300 Championship und CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship werden mit von der Partie sein.

Der Australier John Martin wird am kommenden Wochenende in den Farben von Atletico Madrid starten. Die einzige Dame im Feld, Maria de Villota, gab währenddessen bekannt, zusammen mit den Los Rojiblancos, erst beim nächsten Lauf in Assen dabei zu sein. Demnach gehen in Silverstone 17 Boliden an den Start.

Duncan Tappy wird der dritte Brite, der zusammen mit dem brasilianischen Club Flamengo an diesem Wochenende antritt.

Um vor dem Auftakt in Silverstone die Highlights der Saison 2009 aufzufrischen, überträgt das Fernsehen heute Abend um 22:30 Uhr einen Rückblick auf die Superleague Formula 2009.

Natalia Kowalska confirms place on F2 grid

Female Polish racer is the latest addition to the 2010 line-up

Natalia Kowalska has joined the 2010 FIA Formula Two Championship grid – becoming the 20th confirmed driver for the forthcoming season.

20-year-old Kowalska moves to the F1 feeder series after contesting the F2 winter testing programme in Valencia last December. Her two-day experience of the Williams JPH1 followed a season on the sidelines for the talented Pole, as a lack of budget curtailed her 2009 campaign.

Natalia contested six Star Mazda races in the United States during 2008, which followed a part season in both Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and Formula Renault 2.0 NEC in 2007. Kowalska has also tested both a Formula 3 and International Formula Master car. Prior to her graduation to car racing, the female racer was a multiple karting champion in her native Poland.

Natalia Kowalska said: “Formula Two – just by its name you know that you’re dealing with a big series! F2 was very successful in its first year and everyone I have spoken to has been really positive about it. Of course, it is a very competitive championship and it is a great package all round. I am well aware that there will be some very good drivers but I will just be focussing on my own development and performance. The car is very impressive – that kind of speed and power is something that I had never experienced before. I enjoyed it very much and I think the car suits my style, so I am looking forward to a good season.” 

F2 Series Director Jonathan Palmer said: “I am delighted to welcome a Polish driver to the 2010 driver line-up. F2’s data sharing feature will be of huge importance to Natalia, as she looks to close on the pace of some of the more experienced drivers as soon as possible. Natalia will be up against some tough opposition in Formula Two but she proved during winter testing that she is able to learn and adapt quickly. I am sure Natalia is looking forward to the challenge and will be targeting some points finishes as the season progresses.”

Cetinkaya becomes IRC’s first lady

Burcu Cetinkaya will become the first female driver to contest an expanded programme of Intercontinental Rally Challenge events when she starts her IRC campaign on Rally d’Italia-Sardegna from 4-6 June.
Cetinkaya, from Istanbul, will drive a Peugeot 207 Super 2000 with support from Turkey’s Peugeot importer. She will also contest the asphalt rounds in Ypres, Madeira and Zlin; the gravel events in Azores and Scotland, and the mixed-surface Rallye Sanremo. A decision on whether or not she competes on the Cyprus Rally, the IRC’s other asphalt/gravel event, will be taken in late August. Cicek Guney will continue in her role as Cetinkaya’s navigator.
"To drive a Super 2000 car has been my dream and the Peugeot has been a very successful car in the IRC for the last few seasons so it is a good choice," said Cetinkaya, 29. "Also, the support and coverage Eurosport gives to the IRC is very good and very important for my sponsors. It’s one of the main reasons why I chose the IRC."
Cetinkaya is no stranger to IRC competition having contested the Geko Ypres Rally and Barum Czech Rally Zlin in the past.
She is planning to test on gravel and Tarmac in the coming months in preparation for her IRC bid.

Loix targets wins on IRC return

Freddy Loix will go all out to chase event wins when he returns to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge on the Geko Ypres Rally in Belgium this summer.
The 39-year-old has won the asphalt rally on five previous occasions. Because his IRC campaign will be limited to four events, Loix has ruled out a title bid and will instead chase outright wins in his BFO-Skoda Rally Team Fabia S2000, starting on home soil from 24-26 June.
"Because I’m only doing four IRC rounds I can’t think about the title so my priority will be rally wins," said Loix, who has scored a total of three IRC event wins during his career. "I am very excited about returning to the IRC and I’ve been told the Skoda Fabia is very easy to drive."
In addition to tackling the Ypres Rally, Loix will also compete on the IRC rounds in Zlin and Sanremo. A fourth event will be added to his schedule although a decision on what rally this will be has yet to be taken.

Canarias entry important for IRC title hopes, says Skoda UK

Skoda UK Motorsport team manager Pierfrancesco Zanchi has said entering Rally Islas Canarias later this month is important if Guy Wilks is going to maintain his bid for the Intercontinental Rally Challenge title.
Wilks is second in the IRC drivers‘ standings after scoring a brace of podium finishes on last month’s double-header in South America. Earlier this week, his team confirmed it would be entering a Fabia S2000 for Wilks and regular co-driver Phil Pugh.
Zanchi said: "We have made a good start to the IRC and after three strong points-scoring finishes we are second in the drivers‘ standings. When Rally Islas Canarias was announced as the fourth round of the series, we felt it important for us to contest it as it will enable us to try and maintain our strong championship position and stay in the game."

Circuit of Ireland promises to be spectacular

Organisers of this weekend’s Circuit of Ireland, the first IRC Supporter Event to run in 2010, are promising plenty of spectacular action for drivers and spectators alike.
Based in the town of Newry in Northern Ireland, the all-Tarmac rally will feature stages on both sides of the border with the Republic of Ireland when it runs from 3/4 April.
Bobby Willis, the event director, said: "It’s going to be a great battle throughout the field, we’ve got a great entry and we’re braced for many thousands of spectators. Like all rallies in Ireland, it’s going to be a real challenge because Irish roads aren’t like normal Tarmac stages in that they’re twisty, bumpy and narrow."
Craig Breen, one of the likely frontrunners in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000, said: "Ask anyone to name a rally in Ireland and they’ll say the Circuit of Ireland because there’s so much history and heritage attached to the event. It’s an honour to be taking part."
