The Intercontinental Rally Challenge will include a new event on its schedule in 2011 after an agreement was reached between Eurosport Events, the promoter of the IRC, and Chervonenko Racing, the organiser of the Prime Yalta Rally in Ukraine.
Based in the city of Yalta on the north coast of the Black Sea in Ukraines Crimea region, the Prime Yalta Rally will form the fourth round of the IRC series from 2-4 June. The agreement is currently for 2011 and includes an option to extend the partnership into 2012.
The Prime Yalta Rally will use all-asphalt stages although there are plans to incorporate some gravel-based tests in the future.
Established as the most prestigious round of Ukraines national championship and previously part of the European Rally Cup, the event has gained a reputation for its challenging mountainous route and varying asphalt surfaces. As a result, it attracts up to 100,000 of spectators each year and is popular among competitors, with overseas drivers regularly travelling to the event to compete.
As well as receiving the patronage of the Ukrainian government, the rally will enjoy support from several of the countrys top sports stars including boxing brothers Vitaly and Vladimir Klitschko and footballer Andriy Shevchenko.
Marcello Lotti, the IRC General Manager, said: We have been in close contact with the Yalta Rally organisers for some time and it gives me great pleasure to be able to confirm the event will be joining the IRC family next season. With its population of more than 45 million people, Ukraine represents a very important and growing market for the IRC and another new territory for our young and innovative rally series.
Evgeny Chervonenko, the winner of the last USSR Rally Championship in 1991, the President of the Ukraine Motorsport Federation (FAU) and the head of the Yalta Rally organising committee, said: The Prime Yalta Rally will offer competitors and spectators a high standard asphalt route, stunning mountainous special stages, great scenic views and a full entertainment package including concerts, shows and luxury parties. We invite racers to discover this fascinating route and welcome all true rally fans to join at least 300,000 visitors we expect in Yalta this summer. I am sure that competitors will appreciate the warm Ukrainian hospitality.

F1 and GP2 test prizes for F2 in 2011
MSV confirms enhanced rewards for championship top three
The FIA Formula Two Championship will offer one of the most prestigious prize packages in world motorsport in 2011, building upon the already outstanding reward of a full test with the Williams Formula One team for the champion by introducing GP2 tests for the second and third place finishers.
The competitiveness of the Formula Two Championship and the equality of the cars have been proven by F2 title winners Andy Soucek and Dean Stoneman, who both excelled in their F1 tests for Williams. Jolyon Palmer, 2010 F2 championship runner up, also impressed in the recent GP2 tests at Abu Dhabi.
Williams F1, which has amassed 16 FIA Formula One World Championships in total and designed the JPH1B Formula Two cars for series operators MSV, has confirmed that its successful relationship with F2 will continue in 2011.
Williams F1 Chairman Adam Parr explained: Williams F1 is proud of its continued association with the increasingly successful FIA Formula Two Championship. When we embarked on the project with MotorSport Vision in 2008, our objective was to provide aspiring young racing drivers with a proving ground in which to develop their talents at a reasonable cost.
The championship is clearly achieving those objectives and producing some of the sports future stars. We are therefore delighted to maintain our support for a third year by rewarding the 2011 series champion with the opportunity of a Formula One test session with the AT&T Williams team.
Alongside the Williams prize test for the champion, the 2011 FIA Formula Two Championship will reward its second and third place finishers with GP2 tests establishing a clear and comprehensive route for the worlds best young talents to progress into the highest tiers of motor racing. The top three will also become eligible for an FIA Super Licence, required to compete in Formula One Grands Prix.
F2 Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer said: The continuation of the Williams F1 test for the 2011 Formula Two Champion is a huge benefit, particularly as it takes place over a full day during the coveted F1 Rookie tests. Williams are the perfect partner for F2 and they really provide the best opportunity possible for our championship winner. With GP2 being a well proven route to F1 we believe its important to award GP2 tests for second and third placed drivers to reinforce our seriousness about F2 providing the most cost effective path towards F1.
Drivers interested in competing in the 2011 FIA Formula Two Championship should contact the Championship Co-ordinator, James Gornall. He is based at Bedford Autodrome in the UK and can be contacted at james.gornall@formulatwo.com or on 0044 1234 332439.

YVAN MULLER CROWNED AT THE FIA GALA
Last night Yvan Muller and Chevrolet were been officially named 2010 FIA World Touring Car champions during the traditional FIA prize giving gala in Monaco.
In the sumptuous setting of the Sporting d’Eté’s Salle des Etoiles, the FIA honoured all its champions. In a progression from Karting to Formula One, the FIA World Touring Car Championship’s prize giving took place between the FIA GT1’s and the World Rally Championship’s.
After SR-Sport’s Gabriele Tarquini and Muller’s team-mate Rob Huff – second and third in the championship respectively – had received the runner up trophies, the curtain rose unveiling Muller and Chevrolet Motorsport director Eric Nève standing on the stage, with the Chevrolet Cruze winning car between them.
Yvan Muller was awarded the Drivers‘ World Champion’s trophy for the second time, after the title he won in 2008 for SEAT, while Nève collected Chevrolet’s first Manufacturers‘ Championship trophy.

GUANGDONG TO HOST WTCC RACE OF CHINA
The first ever FIA WTCC event in Mainland China will take place at the Guangdong International Circuit, on November 6, 2011.
GIC is located between the cities of Zhaoqing and Sanshui, some 40 km North East of Guangzhou, China’s third largest city and capital of the Guangdong province.
The circuit was inaugurated in 2009, with modern facilities and a 2.8 km racetrack. Last week it hosted the final meeting of the China Touring Car Championship that in 2011 will share the stage with the FIA World Championship during the WTCC Race of China event.
Marcello Lotti, promoter of the WTCC said: "When we launched the WTCC, reaching the Asian market was one of our priorities. The first step was to include in our calendar a traditional and very popular event like the Macau Grand Prix, then we added Japan and now we are pleased to crown this approach with the further addition of an event in Mainland China. On top of this we are extremely happy to share the event with the China Touring Car Championship. Not only will this enhance the local promotion, but it will also reinforce ours and the Chinese promoter’s will to work in a close cooperation in establishing common strategies for the future."

TOURING CAR PROMOTERS MEET IN MONACO
Promoters representing 16 different touring car championships worldwide attended a round table in Monaco on December 8th / 9th and laid the foundations for a Touring Car Promoter Association that would help to establish common strategies for the future.
On the second day the promoters met car manufacturers‘ representatives for an exhaustive exchange of views on touring car racing.
The round table was organized by Marcello Lotti, promoter of the FIA World Touring Car Championship and European Touring Car Cup: "The aim was to gather information about the current situation in the different series worldwide and identify some common goals and strategies. I am very pleased with the outcome, as all participants expressed the will to work together for globalizing the concept of touring car racing."
The promoters who joined Lotti at the round table, in person or by proxy, represented touring car championships from Asia, Bahrain, Baltic States, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Thailand.
"Some others were not able to join due to previous commitments or because weather conditions affected their flight schedule. However they have showed strong interest and approved the principles of forming an Association. We have been asked to provide a report of the meeting from promoters of touring car series in Argentina, Belgium, China, Emirates, Japan, Turkey and the United States. This was a starting point and now we are looking forward to fix further meetings. " Lotti concluded.
Jack Clarke finishes on top at Barcelona
Briton fastest as F2s winter tests conclude in Catalunya
Jack Clarke put the seal on a fantastic F2 winter testing campaign by finishing fastest on the final day of the second test at Barcelona.
With prime conditions in the first hour of the day, Clarke made a decisive call to switch to new rubber early in the first hour of the day and it paid dividends as he stormed to a 1:37.121s. Several drivers mirrored the move and also set their best times in the first hour, although others were able to make a slight improvement when the overboost function was enabled for the final evening session.
Clarke though set the standard and finished more than half a second clear of the rest of the field, continuing his remarkable trend of finishing inside the top three in every session during the four days of winter testing at Portimão and Barcelona.
Testing has been fantastic really, Clarke enthused. I feel like I have finally found the consistency and speed on new tyres, and its been a real confidence booster to finish inside the top three in every session. I did my time nice and early today when the track was especially good, but it was also a very good lap. The tests have certainly made F2 a very strong option for us, and if I can carry this form and intensity into a 2011 championship campaign I believe it will mark me out as an early favourite.
Spains Ramón Piñeiro enjoyed an impressive showing at the Catalan circuit and ended the day second fastest after also setting his best time in the first hour of running. 2010 Italian Formula 3 Champion César Ramos meanwhile ended the day in style by topping the evening session bettering his best time from the morning to end third fastest overall.
Behind Ramos, yesterdays pacesetter Alex Brundle again looked strong on his return to F2 and finished fourth fastest overall despite having his best time discounted as red flags were issued moments before he crossed the line. Brundle also topped the afternoon session, and matched Ramos in setting his best time in the evening after running on old rubber during the morning.
Having joined winter testing at Barcelona, Switzerlands Christopher Zanella impressed throughout the two days finishing inside the top eight in every session and ending the day fifth fastest overall. Experienced F2 pilots Mihai Marinescu and Benjamin Lariche were separated by just one thousandth of a second in sixth and seventh, with 2010 Formula Palmer Audi Champion making strides in the final 30 minutes of the day to round out the top eight.
British Formula Ford racewinner Daniel Cammish finished the day ninth fastest ahead of 2010 F2 pilot Kelvin Snoeks, who only contested the morning session. Max Snegirev meanwhile edged out Thiemo Storz to finish 12th fastest, Storz bringing about the first of two red flag periods at the close of the day as he went off into the gravel on the outside of turn three.
Dominik Kraihamer was 13th fastest ahead of the days two new drivers, Chinas Martin Qing Hua and Finlands Jukka Honkavuori, who improved steadily throughout the day to end 14th and 15th respectively. Plamen Kralev rounded out the runners in 16th.

Alex Brundle fastest after opening day at Barcelona
Briton edges out compatriot Jack Clarke to finish on top after day one
Alex Brundle finished fastest on the opening day of Formula Two winter testing at Barcelona today, rising to the top of the timesheets in the closing stages of the final overboost-enabled session.
Brundle, fourth and second in the day’s earlier sessions, set his overall best with 12 minutes of the session remaining, meaning he faced an anxious wait as several drivers took turns trying to better his time.
Afternoon pacesetter Jack Clarke ensured a dramatic finish as he set his fastest time in the final 30 seconds of the session, going purple in sector two but ultimately falling just over a tenth of a second shy of Brundles benchmark. Brundle therefore ended the session – and the day – fastest, marking an impressive return to F2 following a season competing in British Formula 3.
I really enjoyed the day, and obviously its a great result to take away for us, Brundle said. We steadily improved through the day, and I had the car just where I wanted it for the last session which was great. Im very happy to be where we are, but we have to carry on working as Im sure everyone else will be doing tonight and stay on top tomorrow.
Behind Brundle and Clarke, Formula Three Euroseries competitor Christopher Zanella ended the day third fastest ahead of fellow newcomer and Italian F3 Champion César Ramos. Benjamin Lariche wasnt able to improve in the final 45 minute session, but his best time of the day was good enough for fifth fastest at the close.
Frances Maxime Jousse, who tested as part of his prize for finishing runner-up in the 2010 Formula Palmer Audi Championship, finished sixth fastest ahead of 2010 F2 competitor Mihai Marinescu, who set the pace in tricky morning conditions.
Fellow returnee Kelvin Snoeks was eighth fastest, ahead of Spains Ramón Piñeiro who was unlucky to see his best lap in the final session discounted after red flags came out moments before he crossed the line.
2010 Formula Palmer Audi Champion Nigel Moore was the next best newcomer in tenth position, finishing ahead of Germanys Thiemo Storz, who crashed heavily into the barriers at the start of the afternoon. Daniel Cammish was the only driver other than Lariche to not improve in the final 45 minutes and he ended the day 12th fastest as a result, having run inside the top ten for much of the day. Dominik Kraihamer, Max Snegirev and Plamen Kralev rounded out the days runners.
The test concludes tomorrow, with Finlands Jukka Honkavuori and Chinas Martin Qing Hua will gain their first experience of the Williams JPH1B F2 car. Qing Hua, who competed in Superleague this year, will become the first Chinese driver to sample the new era of Formula Two.

Loix prepares for ‚world’s toughest rally‘
Freddy Loix has begun his bid to win Rallye Monte-Carlo for the first time after completing a test in the south of France last week.
The 40-year-old Belgian ace drove a Skoda Fabia Super 2000 test car as part of his preparations for the opening round of next year’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
"It was quite difficult because the weather conditions were changing," said Loix, a six-time IRC event-winner. "We had some ideas of what we wanted to do on dry Tarmac but in the end it rained so we had to change a bit the set-up."
Loix, who is planning to enter an expanded programme of IRC events in 2011, said winning Monte-Carlo would represent a major achievement.
"I was second two years ago and if I could finish one place better I would be the most happy man in the world," said Loix. "Monte-Carlo can be quite an easy rally if it’s dry but when it’s wet or if there is snow then it can be one of the toughest rallies in the world."

Andersson vows to maximise PROTON chance
P-G Andersson has vowed to continue his strong run of form on Rallye Monte-Carlo when he makes his debut for the PROTON team on the centenary edition of the event next month.
The 30-year-old from Sweden will drive a Satria Neo Super 2000 for the Malaysian manufacturer on the opening round of next year’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge, an event he has gone well on in the past.
"It’s great to be joining PROTON for Monte, I can’t wait to get the testing started," said Andersson, who made his IRC debut on Rally d’Italia-Sardegna last June. "It’s been a couple of years since I was on this rally the last time, but I have always made good stage times there and it’s a rally I like. Of course, the conditions can make it tough, but if you have to gamble with the tyre choice then you can always make some big gains."
Andersson finished eighth overall on his last Rallye Monte-Carlo appearance in 2008. Australian Chris Atkinson will appear in a second factory Satria Neo on the event, while Briton Tom Cave will pilot a semi-works version.
