Heikki Kovalainen clinched his first ever Formula One victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend. The Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes driver was followed onto the podium by Timo Glock of Panasonic Toyota Racing, with Scuderia Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen in third. Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa dominated the race from the first corner, but was forced to retire just three laps from the end.

Lisa Lilley, Shell Technology Manager for Ferrari commented after the race: “Kimi’s podium finish has given Scuderia Ferrari valuable points. While the sport will now break for summer, Shell’s work will go on unabated. As a technical partner, we will continue to support Ferrari over the next three weeks in the hope of adding more points in Valencia."
The result sees Räikkönen move into second place in the FIA Formula One Drivers’ World Championship with 57 points, five points behind Lewis Hamilton of Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes. Felipe Massa dropped to third place with 54 points. Across in the Constructors’ Championship, Scuderia Ferrari retains the lead with 111 points, ahead of Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes on 100 and the BMW Sauber F1 Team on 90 points.
Valencia will host the European Grand Prix on Sunday 24 August 2008.

Stefano Domenicali: “Today we showed the worth of our team and our drivers, but we lacked the total reliability which is absolutely vital. Felipe drove possibly the best race of his career and we are very disappointed about what happened to him just a handful of kilometres from the end. He made an amazing start, attacking at the right moment and then he was comfortably managing his race in the final stages heading for a well-deserved victory. Kimi’s race was compromised by his poor qualifying result yesterday: when you start further back it’s hard to climb up the order. He was stuck behind Alonso for much of the race, but when he finally had a clear track ahead of him, he showed all his and the F2008’s potential. We have to react to this negative moment in our usual way: with grit, determination and with everyone playing their part. We have three weeks of hard work ahead of us to be as well prepared as possible for the European Grand Prix.”
Felipe Massa: “It happened completely without warning, without giving the slightest indication. I was managing the race, because I had a good advantage over second place after Hamilton was delayed with a problem and I was taking no risks whatsoever. I am very frustrated at the moment, because today we had a great car and we had done everything perfectly until just a few kilometres from the finish. Unfortunately, racing can be a cruel sport. We had given it our all, but these things can happen. Now we must not give up, but instead we must react quickly. There are seven races to go and 70 points up for grabs, which means there is plenty of time to make up ground. Our rivals are strong but we have shown we are at their level.”
Kimi Raikkonen: “I am sorry for Felipe and for the team as it is horrible to lose a race in this way. It was tough for me because, when you spend a long time behind a slower car it becomes frustrating and boring. When I was finally able to push, the car was behaving very well, but by then it was too late. I came up behind Glock but in the end, I had to slow as I had a mechanical problem with the rear end and the team told me to be very careful to ensure I brought the car home. It’s true that I’m the one who has won the most points out of the top three in the classification, which shows this championship is really unpredictable, with ups and downs for everyone. It was a disappointing weekend for me but, at least I managed to come away with a decent result. We must try and fix the problems we have in qualifying to start at the front, so as to exploit the potential of the car. If we can do that, then we can get back to fighting for the win.”
Luca Baldisserri: “It hurts to see a car stop with a failure just a few laps from the end when you are solidly in the lead. It’s a real shame, because Felipe drove an extraordinary race: a perfect start, always a fast pace and a great management of the situation in the final stages. Kimi was behind Alonso for two thirds of the race and only when he had a free track ahead of him was he able to show what he can do. Today, we showed our package is up to the job in terms of performance, but we lacked the necessary reliability. We must continue to work to improve still further, as indeed our competitors are doing. We can expect some weeks of hard work ahead of the next race where we want to achieve what slipped from our grasp today in the very last moments.”

Arrabal deja su impronta en esta tercera cita de Velocidad al mando del Demon Car

La tercera cita del Campeonato FBEA de Circuito se presentaba como una prueba de fuego para Gabi Arrabal, en primer lugar ha tenido que hacer frente al cambio de montura, al dejar aparcado a su habitual Speed Car y sustituirlo por un Demon Car con las últimas especificaciones, y por otro ha tenido que combatir, al igual que el resto de participantes, con unas temperaturas que han llegado a superar los treinta y cinco grados centígrados.

Aún así, mejor no le ha podido ir al piloto de Sa Pobla, ya que ha logrado marcar el mejor tiempo de la jornada, ser el más rápido en la Carrera de Persecución y además se ha anotado el triunfo en la categoría reservada a los monoplazas.

Gabi Arrabal se ha sentido muy a gusto con el Demon Car tras los tests realizados en la jornada de ayer. “El motor Suzuki tira mucho y sube muy bien de vueltas también me ha gustado mucho el comportamiento del chasis y sobre todo los frenos, es una delicia poder aprovechar esos centímetros de más y frenar en el último momento” comentaba el piloto de la Escudería Mallorca Competició después de finalizar la primera tanda de entrenos.

Pero no todo ha sido coser y cantar para el pobler, en la segunda parte de la competición Arrabal ha tenido que emplearse a fondo al haberse degradado excesivamente los neumáticos por la alta temperatura del asfalto, finalmente ha podido bajar el ritmo al retirarse, por avería en su motor, su principal rival.

Santi Guitart ha estado todo el tiempo al lado del mallorquín aconsejándole para que pudiera exprimir todo el jugo a la última versión de circuito y montaña del Demon Car, y la verdad es que ha quedado más que satisfecho con los tiempos que ha marcado Arrabal en esta primera toma de contacto en carrera.

Zwei Champagnerduschen für Juncadella in Ungarn.

Der 17 Jahre alte Spanier Daniel Juncadella (Eurointernational) trug sich am Wochenende auf dem Hungaroring zwei Mal in die Siegerliste der Formula BMW Europe ein. Am Samstag gewann er vor Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing) und Kevin Breysse (FR/DAMS Team). Hinter dem Sieger Juncadella überquerten am Sonntag Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing) und Wittmann als Zweiter und Dritter die Ziellinie.

An beiden Tagen ging Juncadella von der Poleposition ins Rennen. Die jungen Fahrer zeigten im zehnten Lauf ein diszipliniertes Rennen und vermieden weitestgehend unnötige Kollisionen. Als prominente Beobachter standen BMW Motorsport Direktor Mario Theissen, BMW Vorstand Ian Robertson und Toro Rosso-Boss Gerhard Berger an der Boxenmauer. Nach zehn von 16 Läufen dominiert eine Spitzengruppe von vier Fahrern die Gesamtwertung der Formula BMW Europe.
Gutierrez führt mit sechs Siegen und 250 Punkten vor Juncadella mit zwei Siegen und 200 Punkten, dahinter liegt Adrien Tambay (Eifelland Racing) mit zwei Siegen und 198 Zählern, sowie Wittmann mit sechs Podiumsplatzierungen und 194 Punkten. In der Rookiewertung überholte Michael Christensen (Double R Racing) den bis vor dem Wochenende Führenden David Mengesdorf (Mücke Motorsport). Der für das britische Team Räikkönen Robertson Racing fahrende Däne Christensen mit 92 Punkten gehört ebenso wie der Deutsche Mengesdorf mit 87 Punkten zu den von BMW geförderten Piloten.
Die Läufe elf und zwölf der Formula BMW Europe finden in drei Wochen (22.- 24. August) im Rahmen des F1 Grand Prix von Europa auf einem Stadtkurs in Valencia statt.

1. Platz Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational): "Ein perfektes Wochenende mit zwei Poles und zwei Siegen. Allerdings waren es keine leichten Rennen für mich. Im zehnten Lauf lag ich nach sechs Runden mit 1,5 Sekunden Vorsprung vor dem Fahrerfeld, doch dann sah ich auf den Schildern meiner Mechaniker, dass Esteban richtig Gas gab. Mein Puls stieg, doch ich konzentrierte mich bis zum Schluss. Nach meinen zweiten Plätzen in Barcelona und Zolder musste ich in Budapest feststellen, dass Sieger immer eine besonders heftige Champagnerdusche von den Kollegen erhalten. Man kann sich nicht vorstellen, wie das in den Augen brennt.“
2. Platz Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing): "An diesem Wochenende konnte ich viel lernen. Durch den Rennunfall am Samstag mit Adrien bekam ich keine Punkte und musste mich für das nächste Rennen mental gut einstellen. Es funktionierte, ich wurde Zweiter und ich weiß, dass viele Fahrer gern an meiner Stelle auf dem Podium gestanden hätten. Deshalb sind nicht nur Siege ein Erfolg für mich. Es sind diese Art von Erfahrungen, die einen weiter bringen.“
3. Platz Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing): "Insgesamt habe ich mir von diesem Wochenende mehr erhofft. Erst recht nach meinem Qualifying mit zwei Startplätzen aus der ersten Reihe. Generell ist es nicht einfach, auf dieser Strecke zu überholen, da muss man schon ganz schön nah dran sein. Ich versuche jetzt, nach vorn zu blicken. Der Stadtkurs in Valencia ist für jeden Fahrer neu. Man kennt nur eine Streckenskizze oder das ein oder andere Video. Da werden die Karten neu gemischt."

BMW Sauber F1 Team – Großer Preis von Ungarn – Rennen

Wetter: trocken und sonnig, 29-30°C Luft, 29-45°C Asphalt
Budapest (HU). Ein einziger WM-Zähler ist die karge Beute für das BMW Sauber F1 Team nach dem Großen Preis von Ungarn. Robert Kubica kam trotz seines guten Startplatzes (Position vier) als Achter nur gerade so in die Punkteränge. Nick Heidfeld hatte von Startplatz 15 aus ohnehin kaum Chancen und wurde mit einer Einstopp-Strategie noch Zehnter.

„Das war ein schwieriges Rennen. Wir waren sehr langsam, und ich hatte Probleme mit dem Grip. Ich hatte massives Übersteuern und konnte einfach nicht richtig angreifen. Ich musste permanent darum kämpfen, das Auto auf der Strecke zu halten. Immerhin: Ein Punkt ist besser als nichts.“

„Mein Start war nicht perfekt, aber in Ordnung. Ich konnte, wie erhofft, in der ersten Runde drei Autos überholen. Aber dann war die Fahrt mit dem aufgrund der Einstopp-Strategie sehr schweren Auto schwieriger als erwartet. Ich bin fast randvoll getankt gestartet und musste auch auf die Reifen aufpassen. Ich konnte das Tempo der Leute vor mir nicht mitgehen. Warum unser Speed hier im Rennen nicht gepasst hat, müssen wir analysieren. Normalerweise ist ja gerade das eine Stärke von uns.“
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Direktor):
„Das Rennen ist komplett an uns vorbei gelaufen. Beide Fahrer waren nicht in der Lage, normale Rundenzeiten zu fahren, wie wir sie vom Freitag und Samstag erwarten konnten. Das gilt für beide Reifenmischungen. Die Ursachen sind derzeit unklar und werden natürlich analysiert. Glückwunsch an Heikki Kovalainen zu seinem ersten Formel-1-Sieg und natürlich an Timo Glock zu einem starken Wochenende, das er mit Platz zwei gekrönt hat.“
Willy Rampf (Technischer Direktor):
„Von unserer heutigen Performance sind wir natürlich sehr enttäuscht. Jetzt geht es darum zu analysieren, warum wir an die Leistung des Qualifyings zu keiner Phase des Rennens anknüpfen konnten. Das wird in den Fabriken in Hinwil und München geschehen, denn eine Testmöglichkeit gibt es bis zum nächsten Rennen in drei Wochen in Valencia wegen der Testpause nicht.“

The ING Renault F1 Team came away with a double points finish today as Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet finished in 4th and 6th places respectively in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Both drivers made good starts with Fernando gaining a place to run in a solid 6th position during the early stages, while Nelson enjoyed a combative opening lap to remain in the top ten during his opening stint.

Fernando held ground during the first round of pit-stops as he waged a race-long battle with the Ferrari of Raikkonen, while Nelson took advantage of a longer first stint to play himself into contention and into the points.

As the race unfolded, both drivers continued to race competitively, running long middle stints to minimise their time on the super-soft tyres. They emerged from their second pit-stops in 5th and 7th places, before gaining another position following Massa’s retirement.

Having scored 8 points this weekend to move up to 5th in the constructors’ championship, the team now heads into the summer break and will reconvene in Valencia for the European Grand Prix in three weeks time

“We fought hard today and we were on the pace with a car that was working well, which is encouraging for the rest of the championship. We scored some important points which is satisfying, even though we could have maybe been on the podium. We must now continue working hard, but today’s result shows that we are moving in the right direction.”

“I am happy with my result this weekend. I scored some valuable points which is promising for the rest of the season. I made a good start, but unfortunately I made a small mistake on the first lap, which meant that I lost the two positions that I had made up. It shows that at this level you cannot afford to make the smallest error. I am continuing to learn and I am determined to continue building on this progress when we go to Valencia at the end of the month.”

"Was für ein unglaubliches Gefühl. Ich konnte es nicht glauben, als
ich sah, wie das Triebwerk von Felipe seinen Geist aufgab und ich
Zweiter war. Ein so gutes Resultat in meinem ersten Jahr ist
fantastisch, also riesigen Dank an das ganze Team, einschließlich
der Ingenieure, Mechaniker und aller Leute daheim im Werk. Ich
wusste aus dem Qualifying, dass unser Speed gut war, und wir sahen
das ganze Wochenende hindurch stark aus. Heute hatte ich einen guten
Start und ich konnte in die erste Kurve einen Platz gutmachen. Ich
hatte ein wirklich gutes Auto und alles lief perfekt bis zum letzten
Stint auf den weichen Reifen. Damit hatte ich stark zu kämpfen und
im Nu lag Kimi an mir dran. Ich wusste aber vom letzten Jahr in der
GP2, wo ich mit einem wirklich guten Auto im Mittelfeld festsaß, wie
schwer es hier ist zu überholen. Als ich ihn im Spiegel sah, war mir
klar, dass ich mir keine Fehler erlauben konnte. Dieses Resultat
gleicht Hockenheim mehr als aus und wir müssen jetzt weiter bis zum
Ende der Saison regelmäßig Punkte sammeln.

Heikki Kovalainen (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) has won his first Formula One race after an exciting and tension-filled Hungarian Grand Prix, round eleven of the FIA Formula One World
Championship.
Kovalainen used a soft – soft – super soft tyre strategy at the Hungaroring near Budapest to take the top step of the podium in his 28th Grand Prix. The race had looked to be going the way of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver Felipe Massa, until he retired from the lead with just three laps remaining and scored no points.
Massa had led the field after overtaking pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) at the first corner and the duo maintained an advantage at the head of the field through much of the race. On lap 41, Hamilton suffered a deflated tyre, the exact cause of which is being investigated by Bridgestone and the team, which meant an early pit-stop from second position. Although this affected his strategy, he was able to fight back to finish in fifth.
Timo Glock (Panasonic Toyota Racing) crossed the line in second place, 11 seconds behind Kovalainen. Kimi Raikkonen (Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro) finished in third place and also set the race’s fastest lap, using the super soft compound in his final stint to achieve a 1min 21.195secs. Fernando Alonso (ING Renault F1 Team) finished in fourth, 1.4 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
Sixth position went to Nelson Piquet (ING Renault F1 Team), Jarno Trulli (Panasonic Toyota Racing) finished in seventh and Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber F1 Team) scored the final point.
Leaving Hungary, Hamilton continues to lead the drivers’ championship with 62 points from Raikkonen on 57. Massa is in third place on 54. Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro lead the constructors’ championship with 111 points, whilst Vodafone McLaren Mercedes have moved into second place on 100 points. The BMW Sauber F1 Team are in third on 90 points.
Formula One now takes a brief break until the European Grand Prix on 22-24 August at the new street course in Valencia, Spain. Bridgestone’s soft and super soft compound Potenza tyres will be used, in what is Bridgestone’s 200th Grand Prix since entering the sport in 1997.

“Congratulations to Heikki Kovalainen for scoring his first Grand Prix win, and also to Timo Glock for achieving his first F1 podium finish, especially after his accident in the last race. Performance from both compounds was good and the super soft was faster when we saw more rubber laid on the track, as we saw from Kimi Raikkonen’s fastest lap. The super soft also performed well in the case of David Coulthard, who used it to run a long first stint, starting the race with a heavy car. Regarding Lewis Hamilton’s tyre deflation, we are still investigating the reason for this as it is not immediately apparent from initial analysis, however a puncture from a sidewall cut looks to be the probable cause.”
