Euroseries 3000 champion and GP2 racer makes the switch to F2

Will Bratt is the latest driver to confirm that he will join the FIA Formula Two Championship for the 2010 season.

The British racer steps up to F2 after winning the Euroseries 3000 title last season, where he took four race wins, nine podiums and four pole positions in the series now known as Auto GP. Bratt impressively secured pole positions and race victories at Valencia (twice), Zolder and Monza – all circuits that Formula Two will visit in 2010. The 21-year-old also went on to contest the GP2 Asia Series over the winter as part of his Euro 3000 championship prize.

In 2008, Bratt was a frontrunner in Formula 3 Spain and also enjoyed his first run in a GP2 car, where he set the second fastest time during a group test at Paul Ricard. Prior to this, the Oxford University graduate scored wins in Formula Renault 2.0 UK and finished as runner-up in the 2007 Formula Palmer Audi Autumn Trophy. His car racing career began in the UK T-car series, where he won the title with 14 wins from just 18 races in 2004.

It’s one of the most high-profile and best-promoted championships on the international stage, plus it’s designed to produce a truly level playing field so the onus is on driving talent. Lorenzo to take part in next test in Qatar

Fiat Yamaha Team rider Jorge Lorenzo will take part in this week’s MotoGP test in Qatar, four weeks after breaking a bone in his right thumb during a training incident.
The 22-year-old has spent the time recuperating at home in Barcelona and he has now been given the all-clear by his doctor to get back on his bike. The recovery has gone well and the hand is no longer swollen, but he needs to continue with physiotherapy in order to keep repairing the muscle around the break.
His doctor has confirmed that there is no risk to the broken bone from riding, but he will need to wait until testing starts in order to ascertain if he will be able to ride and use the brake at full strength.
This week’s test takes place on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th of March under the Qatar floodlights, the last test before the season starts in April.

The fracture happened less than five weeks ago, but we could not have missed this last test because it would have been negative for our preparation; we are not far from the first race of the season! The doctor has made a special carbon fibre protection and Dainese have modified my glove, in order to further protect the fracture, so we will see how we get on."

Of course we have had to miss a whole test but we are confident that we can make up for lost time because the 2010 bike has proved to be very competitive from the first time we have used it. The doctors have prepared a special brace for the thumb, Dainese have prepared special gloves and also a modified handlebar grip has been produced. Yamaha will give him all the support and time he needs to return to full strength."

Segundos test’s del SAG-Castrol en Montmeló

El Circuito de Catalunya ha sido el escenario de los segundos test’s de pre-temporada del equipo SAG-Castrol, dirigido por Eduardo Perales, y que cuenta entre sus filas al piloto mallorquín Joan Perelló, que disputará el Nacional de Velocidad CEV y el Europeo, además de alguna prueba del Mundial como wildcar.

Al contrario que en los primeros test’s, la climatología ha acompañado y se han podido extraer conclusiones muy valiosas de cara a la temporada 2010 que dará comienzo el próximo 18 de abril en este mismo circuito. Joan ha estado rodando en unos tiempos muy buenos, que han llenado de optimismo al equipo, demostrando que el trabajo que han realizado durante el invierno no ha sido en vano y que puede dar sus frutos.

BUENAS SENSACIONES EN LA PRIMERA PRUEBA PARA ALEX PALERM

Este domingo Alex Palerm ha participado en su primera prueba de la temporada, dentro de la categoría Junior del Campeonato de Cataluña de karting en el circuito de Osona (VIC)
El equipo Diabolo Karting ha sufrido durante todo el fin de semana diferentes problemas mecánicos en el kart en los momentos más decisivos de esta primera prueba para el piloto mallorquín.
En los entrenamientos libres, Palerm se colocaba en novena posición a tan sólo 4 décimas de la pole position. En la tanda cronometrada tras algunos problemas técnicos, Alex no podía mejorar su tiempo y se clasificaba en la novena posición de parrilla para la carrera.
Una excelente salida en la primera carrera y la lucha de Palerm por avanzar posiciones han dado su fruto, rodando en un tiempo de 49,3 Alex ha conseguido avanzar hasta la séptima plaza.
De cara a la segunda manga, Palerm salía con ritmo y ganas de mejorar el resultado, rodando en tiempos constantes, el mallorquín buscaba remontar hasta los pilotos de cabeza pero a falta de 5 vueltas para el final la cadena del kart se partía y dejaba a Palerm fuera de carrera.
Alex Palerm: "Estoy un poco decepcionado por el resultado, porque se que puedo estar ahí delante, tengo el ritmo y estoy rodando en los tiempos de cabeza. Los problemas mecánicos me han complicado bastante pero asi son las carreras, ahora toca pensar en la próxima prueba y seguir trabajando"

Fernando Alonso (Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro) won the opening round of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship season in emphatic fashion after using a super soft – medium Bridgestone Potenza tyre strategy at the new longer configuration Sakhir circuit for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Alonso led team-mate Felipe Massa across the line for a Ferrari 1-2, with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton taking third. The top three drivers were all on the same tyre strategy. Hiroshi Yasukawa – Director of Bridgestone Motorsport, says “What a great way to start Bridgestone’s fourteenth season of Formula One racing, with great battles right to the chequered flag at the new layout of Sakhir circuit in Bahrain. Congratulations to Fernando Alonso for his win and Ferrari for their 1-2 today. Well done also to Lotus for running so well in their first race. The new regulations have given all teams a good challenge and provided all of the viewers around the world a very exciting first race of the season.” Hirohide Hamashima – Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says “Today we were very happy with tyre performance. This was the first race under these new regulations so no-one knew exactly what to expect. Sebastian Vettel did a great job to manage his super softs at the beginning of the race, making the same set he used for qualifying last the longest of all the front runners. Fernando Alonso drove a very intelligent race for his win, and he was able to set the fastest lap near the end, showing he had managed his tyres very well. It was great to see Felipe Massa back on the podium. Tyre management, as expected, was very important in this first race with no refuelling. The cars and drivers which were more forgiving to their tyres were rewarded with more durable performance. This was only the first of 19 races this season. I think we all have a lot to learn about this season’s best tyre strategies and it will be fascinating unlocking the secrets for the best performance in the races ahead.”

FBM – Trial Clásicas Galdent

Las inmediaciones del Restaurante Galdent han vuelto a ser el escenario de una prueba de trial, esta vez la segunda prueba puntuable del Campeonato de Baleares de Trial Clásicas, que ha sido organizada por el Motoclub Escudería L’Ofre. Los participantes, 11 en la categoría Experts, o en la de Trialers y 11 en la de Amics, tuvieron que dar tres giros a un recorrido que incluía 6 zonas de dificultad media pero muy selectivas.

Experts

Gabi Tomás repitió victoria, aunque esta vez y debido a una no muy buena primera vuelta, no lo hizo con la facilidad a la que nos tiene acostumbrados. Jaime Roig se situaba segundo en el primer giro, a un sólo punto de Tomás, y dispuesto a dar la sorpresa a poco que el líder se despistará. Pero Gabi realizó las dos siguientes vueltas a las zonas muy concentrado, imponiéndose con 10 puntos frente a los 17 de Roig.

También se produjo un bonito duelo por la tercera plaza entre Francisco Planells y Joan Thomás, resulto a favor del primero gracias a un tercer giro en el que sólo penalizó 5 puntos por los 9 de Thomás. Pepín Yuste (39) estuvo a un buen nivel, y fue el primero de un grupo de cuatro pilotos que acabaron con tres puntos de diferencia entre el primero y el cuarto. Francisco Salmerón (41), Joan Gabriel Nadal (42) y Francisco Ramón (42), que en esta ocasión no pudo luchar por los puestos de honor.

Tolo Nadal, Miquel Gayá y Miquel Jaume cerraron la clasificación del grupo azul.

Trialers

Sorpresa en este grupo, dominado en la primera prueba por Luis Blanco, y que en esta ocasión se tuvo que conformar con la segunda plaza debido a una mala primera vuelta. El ganador fue Albert Bonet, que se colocó líder con seis puntos de ventaja con respecto a Blanco en el primer giro. En el segundo Blanco le recuperó cuatro puntos, pero empataron en el tercero, llevándose Bonet una victoria que recordará durante mucho tiempo. Christophe Lescure también se mostró en muy buena forma, siendo el piloto que ocuó la plaza restante del podio, mientras que dos principales protagonistas del 2009, Xim Forteza (subcampeón) y Juan poyatos (campeón) se tenían que conformar con la cuarta y quinta plaza.

Juan Mir y Agustín Roldán se clasificaron a continuación, mientras que Manuel Morales se retiraba.

Amics

El ibicenco Rafael Ruiz se impuso con claridad en esta categoría. Con 4 puntos se llevó la victoria, por delante de Marc Garcías (9) y Maties Cantarero (11), que completaron el podio. Jaume Jordá, Justiniano Mansilla y Felipe Mateo mantuvieron una lucha por la cuarta plaza, quedando en este orden con 17, 18 y 18 puntos de penalización. Cerraron la clasificación Juan Coll, Tomeu Gomis, Pedro Mas Berga, Bernat Calafell y Lluc Cardo.

La siguiente cita de este campeonato se celebrará el próximo sábado 20 de maroz, en Maria de la Salut.

FBM – Cross Country Son Matamoros, Felanitx

El pasado sábado se celebró en el Circuito de Son Matamoros de Felanitx, la primera prueba puntuable del Campeonato de Baleares de Cross Country, organizada por el Motocllub Felanitx, en un trazado que discurría por el própio circuito de motocross más un tramo exterior.

Categoría Expertos

Gran victoria de Toni Sacarés, que se impuso por 1 minuto y 35 segundos a Joan Miquel Munar, después de más de una hora y media de carrera, demostrando no sólo el gran estado de forma que posee sino además la técnica tan depurada que le permite ir rápido durante cada una de las 29 vueltas que dio al trazado. Joan Miquel fue el único que pudo mantener el ritmo de Sacarés, rodando siempre lo suficientemente cerca como para aprovechar cualquier circunstancia para arrebatarle la primera posición, algo que no sucedió.

Toni Obrador fue, junto a los dos de cabeza, el único piloto que marcó su vuelta rápida por debajo de los 2:58.500, pero no pudo evitar ser doblado por ambos. Aún así obtuvo la recompensa de subor al podio.

En la misma vuelta que Obrador se colocaron Tomás Riera y Jordi Rosselló, precediendo al resto de participantes, Pedro Mas Manresa, Jordan Riera, Bartolomé Massanet, Jaime Manresa, Carlos Sánchez, Juan Lladó, José Carlos Gil de Sola y Juan J. Coll.

Categoría Open

Miquel Munar entró en meta en primera posición, tras poco más de una hora de carrera, separado del segundo clasificado Rafael Cerdá por 3 minutos y 27 segundos. Crisbobal Bosch fue tercero, ya con dos vueltas menos, seguido por Pedro Mas Bergas, Manuel Ortiz, Rafael Bagur y Jordi Pizá.

Categoría 65cc

Los más pequeños tuvieron que rodar 30 minutos por el trazado marcado en Son Matamoros, con un claro dominador, Toni Ferrer, que le sacó más de 21 segundos a Ignacio Alcoceba, que fue segundo. Guillermo Martí ocupó la tercera plaza del podio, mientras que José Mª Carmona encabezaba el resto de pilotos, José Luis Pérez, Juan Ruano, Jordi Portell, Alejandro Fernández, Marc Arjona, Jesús Ferreres y Daniel Urrutia. Jorge Rey sólo pudo rodar veinte minutos mientras que Jordi Font no tomó la salida.

La segunda carrera, de las tres que componen el campeonato, se celebrará el 12 de septiembre en Maria de la Salut.

Bridgestone Motorsport’s GP2 Asia Series Report

Giacomo Ricci scored DPR’s first race win since 2005 and Luca Filippi gave MalaysiaQi- Meritus.com their first GP2 Asia win at round four of the Bridgestone supported GP2 Asia Series at Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit. The medium compound Bridgestone GP2 tyre helped provide close action over the race weekend in Bahrain, with pole position taken by Filippi by 0.91secs from Arden International driver Charles Pic, with the top ten drivers separated by less than a second. Friday’s race was won by Filippi from pole, although he was under constant pressure from newly crowned champion, Davide Valsecchi (iSport International), who finished just two seconds behind. Most drivers changed their rear tyres in the compulsory pit stops in this race.   Saturday’s race with a reverse top eight grid from the first race saw Ricci make a superb start from fourth on the grid to lead after the first corner. With no pit stop in this race, Ricci was able to lead all the way to the chequered flag. ART Grand Prix driver Sam Bird finished second, over five seconds behind.   This weekend’s round ran alongside the first race of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship, for which Bridgestone is Official Tyre Supplier. Quote from Kentaro Yamamoto – Bridgestone Motorsport GP2 Asia Series Engineer “I really enjoyed this weekend’s racing and it was a good way to end this season’s championship. Once again, tyre degradation was a factor in the race, and this is the target of the GP2 Series to make the racing exciting, and reward the drivers who learn the best tyre management. In both races the top three drivers at the end of the first lap finished in the top three positions, showing that a good start is vital when tyre degradation is a factor. This round was interesting as we used the longer layout circuit at Sakhir, whereas for the previous round we used the shorter configuration. In yesterday’s race most drivers opted to change their rear tyres. This was a difficult decision as many drivers reported understeer at the end of the race.”

Formula Palmer Audi frontrunner steps up to international racing

British racer Paul Rees, son of ex-F1 driver Alan Rees, is the latest addition to the FIA Formula Two Championship line-up after his place on the 2010 grid was confirmed today.

Rees joins F2 after taking five podium positions in Formula Palmer Audi last season, which included a hat-trick of rostrums at Brands Hatch in August. 2009 followed a successful maiden campaign in the FPA series where the 23-year-old took pole position on his championship debut and ended the season as the third highest placed rookie. Rees has also raced in both Formula BMW and Formula Renault 2.0 in the UK.

Paul’s father Alan finished third in the 1966 Formula 2 Trophées de France, beating Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill along the way. He then went on to finish fifth in the inaugural Formula 2 Europe championship in 1967, and he also competed in Formula One for Brabham.

Paul has already driven the Williams-designed F2 car during winter testing in Portimão, Portugal and the Oxford driver is now hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father by reaching the highest tier in motorsport.

Paul Rees said: “I am thrilled to be racing in Formula Two – this feels like the natural step on the motorsport ladder for me and I am 100% ready for it. I was really impressed with the F2 car during testing – there is a lot of power, good balance and a great gearbox. My father Alan Rees was a very successful Formula Two driver and it’s a good feeling to be the next generation racing under the same name. F2 is likely to be a two year programme for me – of course Formula One is my ultimate goal but I am fully focussed on succeeding in F2 first. Italy’s Nicola De Marco has become the latest driver to commit to Formula Two for a second season, following yesterday’s announcement that Kazim Vasiliauskas will also return in 2010.

19-year-old De Marco enjoyed a highly promising maiden season in F2, recording his first pole position in tricky wet conditions in Brno before going on to clinch his first podium a day later, having led for much of the race. He also finished the year strongly with his best result of 2nd in the final race at Barcelona, finishing close behind 2009 champion Andy Soucek.

The Italian’s single seater career stretches back to 2006, when he won three races and finished third overall in his maiden season in Formula Azzurra. He stepped up to Formula 3 Italy in 2007, scoring podiums on a regular basis and clinching one pole, before a strong 2008 campaign saw him outclass his RP Motorsport team-mates and finish fourth in Spanish F3, with two race wins and four podiums to his credit.

Nicola De Marco said: “I’m really happy to be returning for a second season of Formula Two. This year could be very good for me – I know the car, I know the series, so it’s possible to put together a very good championship. I finished last year very strongly with my best result in the final race, and I also had some good results along the way, so for sure I’m only looking at winning the title. It will be difficult of course, but for me Formula Two is the best championship and gives me the best opportunity to progress, so it’s great to be coming back.”

Alex Palerm: PRIMERA PRUEBA DE LA TEMPORADA EN KF3

Alex Palerm participará este próximo fin de semana en su primera prueba de la temporada, competirá en la categoría KF3 del Campeonato de Cataluña de Karting. El piloto mallorquín disputará su primera prueba en el trazado de VIC, donde a partir de mañana sábado comenzarán a rodar los pilotos en las tandas de entrenamiento.
El equipo Diabolo Karting está muy ilusionado con las posibilidades del joven Palerm, el cambio de categoría y los tiempos conseguidos en los entrenamientos de pre-temporada están demostrando que este año puede ser muy positivo para Alex.
Alex Palerm: "Tengo muchas ganas de ver lo que puedo hacer en KF3, sin el problema del peso que nos provocó tantos problemas la pasada temporada, creo que podremos ser competitivos y luchar por estar delante en el Campeonato de Cataluña".

Lithuanian eyeing championship glory and Williams F1 test drive

Formula Two race winner Kazim Vasiliauskas has become the latest driver to be confirmed on the 2010 grid after announcing his return to the series today (12/03).

Vasiliauskas, 19, played a starring role in the 2009 season, scoring his maiden race victory in Imola after starting from pole and sealing seventh in the overall championship, despite it being his first full season in single seaters.

Kazim further belied his age and relative inexperience by taking podiums at Valencia, Donington Park and Oschersleben, and remarkably ended the season as one of only three drivers to have scored points in every round of the season, alongside 2009 Champion Andy Soucek and third-placed Mikhail Aleshin. He also outscored everyone but Soucek and Aleshin over the second half of the season, cementing his reputation as one of the most exciting prospects in world motorsport.

Vasiliauskas, who topped the timesheets in the recent F2 test at Portimão, made history last year by becoming the first Lithuanian ever to compete in international single seaters. He has also tested GP2 and GP3 during the off-season but chose to return to F2 for a second season.

Kazim Vasiliauskas said: "For sure this year I’m expecting to win the championship. Last year my form was very good, and I finished the second half of the year very strongly. Now I have more experience, and I know the F2 operation and most of the circuits on the calendar. I believe in myself completely, so winning is the only target.

"This year through testing I was able to compare GP2, GP3 and Formula Two, and for me F2 represents the best package: the car has been improved, everyone has the same machinery and the prize is very good. F2 is for sure the right option for me, and I would like to thank Darsena, my managers, for giving me this opportunity. Of course it also helps that I have already driven in the series, and now I look forward to the season ahead!"

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: “For someone of such little experience, Kazim made a big impact in his first year of F2, taking an astonishing podium in the opening event at Valencia.  By competing in FPA and F2 in 2009 Kazim gained a lot of experience and used this, coupled with his outstanding natural talent, to be able to take his first well deserved win by Imola. I believe Kazim has all the attributes required to earn an F1 drive for 2011.  He is always quick, makes few mistakes, is extremely competitive and crucially very intelligent. He is going to be a very strong challenger for the championship and should he win I have no doubt he will impress Williams F1 when he tests at the end of year.  With the benefit of Darsena’s management, I really believe he could be the first Lithuanian in F1 in 2011.”

FIA CANCELS WTCC EVENT IN MEXICO

The FIA, in agreement with promoter KSO, has decided to cancel as a case of Force Majeure the second race meeting of the 2010 FIA World Touring Car Championship scheduled to take place in Puebla, Mexico, on April 11th.
The FIA’s decision is based on security reports from the region and follows close consultation and guidance from OMDAI, the Mexican National Sporting Authority.
About the possibility to replace the Mexican event, KSO general manager Marcello Lotti stated: "No decision has yet been taken. We will think about it, evaluate the different opportunities and decide before the next meeting in Marrakech. As a matter of fact we are not looking for a replacement on the same date of Puebla, because there would not be enough time to organise the event properly with an appropriate promotional campaign. If there is a replacement, this will take place in the gap between Valencia and Okayama and, therefore, would be somewhere on the way to Japan. However we could very well stay with eleven events."
The championship will resume with rounds 5 and 6 at Marrakech, Morocco, on May 2nd.

RTL will show a 10-minute highlights programme of WTCC races before the broadcast of F1 qualifying sessions, within a captive motorsport fan audience. The first programme will be aired on March 13th alongside the F1 season opener in Barhain.
In addition, WTCC will also receive coverage on RTL multimedia platform, including editorial features on the RTL website and in the news reports.
Marcello Lotti, General Manager of KSO, the promoter of the WTCC, commented: "This deal with RTL marks an important strategic development for us. Getting our World Championship onto terrestrial TV in the leading automotive market in Europe is a massive boost for everyone involved and will bring the WTCC to a major new audience. Over the past five years, the WTCC has enjoyed a steady audience growth, consolidating its FIA World Championship status as well as increasing its popularity worldwide.
In 2009, the WTCC drew record viewing figures with a cumulative global audience of 430 million different viewers (+23% over 2008) and increased its worldwide distribution to more than 160 countries across 75 TV networks.

Miguel Socías en la segunda prueba del Campeonato de Cataluña de Karting

El Circuito de Osona acogerá la segunda cita del catalán de karting

Tras un buen inicio de temporada Miguel Socías espera seguir en esta línea en lo que será su segunda participación en el Campeonato de Cataluña de Karting que se disputará en el Circuito de Osona en la localidad de Vic (Barcelona). El trazado cuenta con una cuerda de 940 metros con un ancho constante de ocho metros y esta dividido en dos secciones una bastante lenta con predominio de curvas cerradas y otra más rápida con dos rectas que a buen seguro marcaran las diferencias.

El fin de semana pasado el balear estuvo entrenando duro en el trazado de Vic para conocer y adaptarse al recorrido, que en su opinión es muy técnico y algo lento, y a la vez empezar a buscar los reglajes más adecuados para esta pista.

El campaneter afronta este segundo asalto con optimismo después de estar a punto de finalizar en el "top ten" en la primera prueba de la temporada. En esta segunda cita la participación será de nuevo de autentico lujo con cuarenta y cuatro equipos que lucharán por una puesto en la final, el piloto del Grupo Puma espera ser uno de ellos. Intentar mejorar el resultado logrado en El Vendrell será una tarea ardua, visto el nivel que hubo el fin de semana pasado en el circuito de Osona, donde los pilotos que entrenaron rodaron por debajo del minuto.

Los comentarios de Miguel Socías antes de tomar rumbo hacia tierras catalanas eran los siguientes:

"Nuestro objetivo para esta carrera es intentar estar entre los diez primeros, sé que será difícil, pero debo intentarlo. Aunque lo primero y primordial es conseguir clasificarnos, para ello necesito hacer un buen crono. La semana pasada empezamos sin ninguna referencia al ser nuevo el circuito para todo el equipo, pero el domingo ya estábamos rodando a buen ritmo, si logramos acertar con los reglajes, creo que podremos hacer una buena carrera para brindarla a nuestros patrocinadores."
