De Marco grabs pole for Race One

Italian masters tricky wet conditions in Brno

Nicola De Marco took pole position for the first race of the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship in Brno tomorrow (Saturday 20 June).

Mikhail Aleshin held the top spot in the early part of the session, before Edoardo Piscopo took over. De Marco also held the provisional pole for a brief time before a late flurry of changes in the final 15 minutes. Tobias Hegewald and Carlos Iaconelli held the top two spots at one stage, but both dropped down the order as De Marco returned to take pole in the closing stages.

Mirko Bortolotti guided his car to second on the grid to complete an Italian 1-2, whilst Finnish driver Henri Karjalainen completed the top three after making impressive progress throughout the day. After dominating the opening two practice sessions, Mikhail Aleshin will have been disappointed to have dropped to fourth as the chequered flag fell. Philipp Eng and Edoardo Piscopo rounded out the top six, with Carlos Iaconelli seventh and Tobias Hegewald eighth – still within one second of De Marco’s pole time.

Andy Soucek and Robert Wickens rounded out the top ten. Championship leader Wickens was unable to threaten the ultimate pace setters, but he will expect to fight for points during tomorrow’s 22-lap race.
The session had to be red flagged halfway through following spins for Jens Höing and Jason Moore, and when Henry Surtees went off into the gravel with two minutes remaining on the clock, the red flag brought qualifying to a close. Armaan Ebrahim, Natacha Gachnang and Alex Brundle were others that fell foul of the conditions – all three endured spins during the session.
Rain continued to fall throughout qualifying, though not as heavily as during today’s free practice sessions.

Nicola De Marco said: “I’m very happy, and I really enjoyed the wet conditions. I’ve worked very hard to get this place, especially after Valencia, so I’m really happy to have come away with such a strong result. I hope to have a good race tomorrow, and then another good qualifying and race on Sunday. I’m not sure whether I should be hoping for rain or not!”

Mirko Bortolotti said: “This is my first time here, so I struggled a bit early on. I am happy with second anyway because I didn’t think after the second session I could be starting on the front row. There is still a long way to go in the season, and there are 25 drivers, so I have 24 rivals not just one. The competition is high, so I’m just happy to start on the front row and I’m looking forward to the race.”

Henri Karjalainen said: “I’m very happy with my position, especially because in Valencia my best in qualifying was 19th. Coming into Brno I knew I had to concentrate more on qualifying and post good laps, and I am very happy that it worked. I was certainly pushing hard, and we also made some improvements to the car which made it feel really good. I knew in the rain I could finish anywhere, so I just pushed hard and I’m very happy to be third.”

Volles Starterfeld in Oschersleben

LOIX LEADS AFTER DAY ONE IN BELGIUM

Last year’s Belgium Ypres Rally winner Freddy Loix (Peugeot 207 S2000) holds a lead of just under five seconds at the overnight halt, from IRC series leader Kris Meeke. "I’m just trying to drive carefully and keep my concentration," said Loix at the finish. "I know this event quite well but it’s still so easy to make a mistake."
However, Meeke – the winner of the last two IRC rounds – has kept pace with Loix to hold a strong second place at the overnight halt.  Meeke declared himself ’surprised‘ to be trading fastest times with his veteran Belgian rival on home soil.
"I’m just driving my own stages," Meeke said. "I’m very surprised to be going so quickly, and I knew that if I came back into service leading the rally I’d be for the high jump! I don’t want to beat Freddy."
Having passed Loix for the championship lead with victory at the last IRC round in the Azores, Meeke has pledged to go carefully and ensure that he doesn’t throw away his chances on the notorious roads in Flanders. Nevertheless he and the Belgian WRC winner have pulled away from the chasing pack on every stage, with the gap standing at 4.9s at the overnight halt.
Czech asphalt ace Jan Kopecky trails them by 8.4s in his factory Skoda Fabia S2000, with a charging Giandomenico Basso clawing back time for Abarth in the battle for fourth, ahead of Kopecky’s teammate Juho Hanninen by 0.2s.
Both the BF Goodrich Peugeot being guest-driven by Thierry Neuville and Britain’s other leading entry in the event, the new Proton Satria of Guy Wilks, joined the high-profile retirements.
The 21-year-old Belgian talent crashed out of the event on the sixth stage, Lille-Eurometropole 2 after a strong performance through the day.  Wilks, who was struggling with an over-eager engine temperature warning and without the ideal gear ratios because of homologation issues, went off the road on SS5.  The Skoda Belgium entry of former WRC winner Francois Duval crashed out a few hundred metres from the start of SS1. Peugeot’s Nicolas Vouilloz also hit trouble, damaging the front of his car with an off on the opening stage. "We were going fast, hit a bump and we spun quite fast," he said. The Frenchman dropped to 59th at the end of the stage but recovered to set the fifth fastest time on the second and third stages.
Bernd Casier, making his debut with the Abarth factory team, was delayed by a puncture on the final stage. Meanwhile, Dutch driver Marcel Piepers is in the provisional lead of the IRC 2WD Cup after a faultless performance.
The rally restarts at 12:30 tomorrow with an intense 10-stage run to the finish.

Brawn GP News: Brawn GP look forward to Silverstone

Brawn GP look forward to Silverstone

This weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone takes place just eight miles from Brawn GP’s factory in Brackley and 20 miles from Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth.
British star Jenson is looking forward to his home race: "It puts a smile on my face every time I think about going to my home Grand Prix leading the Championship! I’ve raced at Silverstone from some fairly tough positions in the past but the fans have always been so supportive and I’d love to give them a performance that they can really enjoy this weekend".
Rubens is also looking forward to Silverstone which is one of his favourite circuits: "I absolutely love racing at Silverstone. The track is fantastic as it is one of the few remaining on the calendar that are high-speed, fast-flowing and really allow you to let the car go through the quick corners. It almost feels like a home track and the crowds are always supportive, even if you aren’t British!"

Special British helmet design for Jenson at Silverstone

Jenson will continue his tradition of wearing a specially designed helmet for the British Grand Prix following a design competition on JensonButton.com
After reviewing hundreds of entries, Bernie Zobl’s ‚Push The Button‘ design was chosen by Jenson and will make its track debut during the first practice session on Friday.
Bernie said: "Through an article in one of the Austrian daily newspapers, I read about the opportunity to design a helmet for Jenson. As an enthusiastic F1 fan, I had to grab the chance immediately! The slogan ‚Push the Button‘ was my first brainwave and even though my family laughed about its simplicity, I’ve held on to it. And as you can see, it has been worth it!"
Jenson commented: "For the last few years, it has become something of a tradition for me to have a special British themed helmet. What I loved about Bernie’s design was its unique take on the Union Jack flag and how he had incorporated it into my own ‚Button‘ logo. The helmet looks great and I can’t wait to wear it at Silverstone this weekend."

Robert Wickens defends championship lead in the Czech Republic

FIA Formula Two Championship

After a hugely successful inaugural weekend in Valencia last month, the third and fourth rounds of the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship take place in Brno, Czech Republic, this weekend (19/20/21 June).

All eyes will be on championship leader Robert Wickens after the Canadian scooped a dominant double victory in Spain. Amongst those chasing him down will be his two Red Bull Junior colleagues, Mirko Bortolotti and Mikhail Aleshin. Both drivers scored strong points finishes in each race at Valencia and currently lie second and fourth respectively in the overall standings.

Sandwiched between them in the championship is the only other driver to have scored points in each race so far, Brazilian racer Carlos Iaconelli. After spending the last two seasons with under-achieving teams in Formula Renault 3.5 and GP2, the 21-year-old is relishing the prospect of showing his full potential in the level playing field of Formula Two.

Lithuanian Kazim Vasiliauskas and Austrian Philipp Eng will also hope to build on impressive debut weekends in F2 after demonstrating their talents with surprise podiums finishes. Andy Soucek and Julien Jousse will expect to challenge for podium positions this coming weekend after failing to reach that goal in Valencia. Jousse’s confidence is further buoyed having scored a stunning second position in the GT1 class on his Le Mans 24 Hours debut last weekend.

DSC_8828 DSC_9220 DSC_8841

In the battle of the Britons, Henry Surtees currently leads the way from Alex Brundle, whilst Italian duo Nicola De Marco and Edoardo Piscopo also scored creditable points finishes in Valencia.

Drivers hoping to score their first points of the F2 season at Brno include both Jack Clarke and Natacha Gachnang. Swiss female driver Gachnang is hoping an impressive season in Formula Two will help her make history in reaching Formula One. The 21-year-old has been in talks with Adrian Campos about a test seat in the newly formed Campos Grand Prix team, who have signed up to compete in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. Gachnang has previous links with Campos, having finished third in the Spanish Formula 3 Championship with the team last year.

The sweeping Brno circuit is set to provide some great racing this weekend with plenty of overtaking opportunities for the talented crop of 25 Formula Two drivers.

The venue was formerly the site of the pre-war Czechoslovakian Grand Prix and once measured 19 miles in length, but it has hosted the likes of MotoGP, A1GP and World Superbikes in its current layout. This weekend, F2 will partner with the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

Rob Wickens said: "I have set the bar pretty high for myself after the results I had in Valencia. I couldn’t have dreamed of the first round going any better. But, that’s the past now and I know where I need to improve and how to do it. I can’t wait for Brno – I think it will be a very exciting race!"

Mirko Bortolotti said: “This is my first time at Brno and I don’t know the track, but I’m really looking forward to it. My pace at Valencia was very good, and the fact that I was able to put pressure on Robert Wickens in Race Two is really encouraging. I will give my best as always, and if there is a chance to win I hope I can take it.”

Natacha Gachnang said: “For Brno we have a bit of experience, and we know how the car works, so points are definitely the target. For sure the prospect of a test seat with Campos adds a bit of motivation, but I have always been motivated to do my best and am always comparing myself to the fastest drivers. I am in a very positive mood heading into Brno.”

7. Classic Rallye Triest-Wien – das “Making Of” – Teil 1

– Fortsetzung folgt!
    Mit freundlichen Grüssen

Belgium Ypres Rally 18-20 June 2009 IRC Round: 5

The Intercontinental Rally Challenge returns to mainland Europe for
round five of this year’s series, the Belgium Ypres Rally from June 18-20.
The asphalt surface and the tricky conditions of Belgium make for a
technically challenging event which is likely to be played out in
unpredictable weather, when scorching sunshine can turn to heavy rain in the
    blink of an eye.image
The stages on the Belgium Ypres Rally tend to be straight and
narrow farm tracks, with several obstacles to catch out the
unwary. The long straights tend to be followed by sharp 90-
degree corners, making it extremely difficult to judge the
correct braking points. There is also often a lot of loose gravel
on the corners, meaning that the cars struggle to find traction.
These are far from the only hazards crews will have to cope
with: the rapid stages are frequently lined with deep drainage
ditches – often filled with water – and there are trees, walls and
telegraph poles close to the side of the road.
Participation of the seven IRC-registered manufacturers
Belgium is one of the most enthusiastic and proactive motor sport nations on earth so the event is
sure to bring out enormous crowds throughout the event, many of whom will be cheering for local hero
Freddy Loix and his new co-driver Frederic Miclotte. The Belgian duo currently lies second in the IRC
standings, just two points off the lead. A full capacity entry is expected to start this year’s event, with
the IRC front-runners being joined by a host of local and regional talent.
For the first time this year, all seven IRC-registered manufacturers are expected to take the start,
raising the profile of this well-known rally even higher. More than 20 Super 2000 cars will begin the
event this year: another significant record for the IRC.image
The Belgium Ypres Rally is one of the most historic and important events in
Europe. The event is based in the historic town of Ypres, rebuilt brick-for-brick
to its medieval splendour after its destruction in World War I. The magnificent
town square, with the town hall and museum dominating the landscape, acts
as the central service area for the rally and contains the start-finish ramp. This
year will mark the 45th running of the Belgium Ypres Rally, which has been
contested in the past by some of the greatest stars of the sport.
Peugeot UK enters the current championship leader Kris Meeke, the young
British star who has taken back-to-back victories on gravel in Brazil and the
Azores to stand two points clear of Loix in the standings. Defending
champion, Frenchman Nicolas Vouilloz, lies third in the second Kronosprepared
Benelux Peugeot entry, just one point behind his teammate Loix: the
    winner in Ypres last year.
A total of eight Peugeot 207 S2000s head the entry, joined by a Skoda
Fabia S2000 for another great hero of Belgian rallying, Francois Duval,
and a Volkswagen Polo S2000 for legendary Belgian rally ace, 51-yearold
Patrick Snijers. Abarth has also been strong in Belgium in the past,
and the factory Italian team is hoping for more success this year with
former European Champion Giandomenico Basso and Belgian asphalt
ace Bernd Casier, who has been brought in to replace Anton Alen for this
event. Skoda’s factory team will field Juho Hanninen and Jan Kopecky as
    usual.
Proton will be represented on the IRC for the first time, with an entry for
rising British star Guy Wilks, while another star of the future – Thierry
Neuville – has won the BFGoodrich Drivers’ Team entry for Ypres. Pieter
Tsjoen has also been recently confirmed for his home event in a Peugeot
    207 S2000.
They are joined by a host of entrants for the 2WD class in both Super 1600 and Group R machines,
and as ever huge numbers of Group N ’showroom‘ specification Mitsubishi Lancers, such as the car
driven by Austria’s Franz Wittmann, which will doubtless bring further four-wheel drive spectacle to the
    event.
Eurosport will broadcast four hours of live action from the stages
To mark the importance of the Belgium Ypres Rally, and to ensure that everyone in the area gets the
most from the event, stage organisers Superstage have developed a new signposting system which
will allow fans and casual visitors alike the chance to easily find their way to some of the most
    spectacular action.
At Ypres, the fans come first. Not only that, but Eurosport will broadcast four hours of live action from
the stages, enabling television viewers all over the world to fully experience the unique atmosphere of
    the Belgium Ypres Rally.

segunda he empezado mal me he encontrado con un kart atravesado delante mío
y después me he despistado, a partir de aquí hacía mucho calor y no me encontraba
cómodo y he perdido algunos puestos.
Eso he
hecho.

Superleague Formula announces exciting new race format for 2009 season

The opening round of the 2009 Superleague Formula – staged at Magny-Cours, France on Sunday 28 June – will witness the introduction of an exciting new race format. As in 2008, race day will feature two 45-minute showdowns, the second with a reverse starting grid taken from the finishing results of the first. However the action-packed schedule will now reach its thrilling climax with a third race for the top three finishers from the first two races. This special six-car ‘shoot-out’ will decide the overall ‘Weekend Winner’. Extra championship points will not be on offer but the final results will determine the distribution of each event’s 333,000 € prize fund.

Superleague Formula’s Competition Director Robin Webb explains the rationale behind this exciting new development. “The fans have really responded to our unique Superleague Formula race format – particularly the reverse grid race which always produces some dramatic battles as the faster drivers fight their way through the pack from the back. But, while this double-header structure lets two different clubs celebrate success, it doesn’t provide us with an outright winner on the day. Now the introduction of this ‘six-car’ shoot-out will not only produce an overall victor but also provide race-goers and television audiences with a thrilling conclusion to the on-track action. We are always looking for new ways to entertain our fans and we believe this rousing finale will prove to be another hugely popular Superleague Fo rmula innovation.”
The exhilarating new three-race format will run at four of this season’s six Superleague Formula race meetings; those events at Magny Cours, Donington, Estoril and Jarama. There will be a ‘Weekend Winner’ at both Zolder and Monza but this time awarded to the club scoring the most championship points in the two 45-minute races.
Superleague Formula has also confirmed that 17 of the world’s most renowned soccer clubs will be represented on this year’s grid. Three new clubs – Olympique Lyonnais, FC Midtjylland and Sporting Clube de Portugal – are replacing Al-Ain, Beijing Guoan FC, Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla FC in the final 2009 line-up.
“We are significantly increasing the spectacle and excitement for the fans by investing more of our resources into the on-track entertainment in 2009 and are confident that a 17-car grid plus the revised race format will deliver even more excitement and unpredictability than in our highly successful inaugural season. This can only be to the benefit of the clubs, teams, drivers, sponsors and, most importantly, the millions of global fans who’ve already experienced the power and passion of the Superleague Formula,” said Webb.

    Superleague Formula
Superleague Formula is the fusion of the two of the world’s most popular sports – capturing the passion of football with the thrill and excitement of motor racing. The new concept features a field of evenly matched V12-powered, 750 horsepower single seater racecars bearing the colours of the world’s leading football teams. Traditional rivals on the pitch are doing battle at some of the world’s greatest racetracks. The series kicked off in 2008 with 12 ‘double-header’ races staged at six of Europe’s premier venues. Underlining the competitive nature of Superleague Formula, no fewer than eight soccer clubs (AC Milan, Al-Ain, Beijing Guoan FC, BVB Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool FC, FC Porto, PSV Eindhoven and Sevilla FC) experienced race victories during what was a dramatic inaugural campaign. Building on this success, a slightly revised grid featuring three new clubs (Olympique Lyonnais, FC Midtjylland and Sporting Clube de Po rtugal) will contest the 2009 championship, which starts at Magny-Cours in France on 27/28 June.
