CURITIBA HOSTS THE OPENING ROUND

The start of the 2010 FIA World Touring Car Championship is just one week away.
The series‘ sixth season will get underway once again at the Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba, Brazil.
This will be the fifth time the 3.7 km circuit has hosted the WTCC. The championship visited Curitiba for the first time in July 2006; a crowd of 34,000 attended the races that were won by Jordi Gené (SEAT León) and Andy Priaulx (BMW 320si).
From 2007 the Brazilian event was moved to March and given the honour of opening the season. BMW Team Germany fellow drivers Jörg Müller and local boy Augusto Farfus shared victories and the attendance was even larger, with 45,000 spectators. In 2008 SEAT won both races with Yvan Muller and Gabriele Tarquini.
Lat year SEAT’s Muller and Tarquini managed to replicate the previous year’s good results.

Brazilian fans flock every year to Curitiba for the FIA WTCC races

FIA WTCC TO ADOPT NEW POINTS SYSTEM
Following a fax vote by the competitors in the FIA World Touring Car Championship and subject to the fax vote confirmation by the members of the World Motor Sport Council, an amendment will be made to the points system to align with the FIA Formula One World and World Rally Championships. This will take place with immediate effect.
Points will be awarded at each event according to the following scale:
1st: 25 points; 2nd: 18 pts; 3rd: 15 pts; 4th: 12 pts: 5th: 10 pts; 6th: 8pts; 7th: 6 pts; 8th: 4 pts; 9th: 2 pts; 10th: 1 point
Although points will be awarded to the first ten drivers classified in each of the twenty-four championship rounds, this will not affect the top-eight reverse grid for the second race of each event.

COMPENSATION WEIGHT – HOW IT WORKS
The Compensation Weight system (art. 79 of the Sporting Regulations) that was introduced in 2009 will determine the running weight of the WTCC cars again, on the basis of lap time calculation.
The best lap times of the two fastest cars of each model in qualifying and the two best lap times of the two fastest cars of each model in both races are averaged. The calculation is based on a three event rolling average, except it is applied for the first time after the first two events. For example, the results of Events 2, 3 and 4 determines the compensation weight for Event 5.
All the cars run in the first two events of the season on the minimum weight fixed by Appendix 1 of the Sporting Regulations:
BMW 320si: 1155kg
Chevrolet Cruze: 1150kg
Chevrolet Lacetti: 1140kg (as per the -10kg waiver granted by the Touring Car Committee)
SEAT León TDI: 1170kg
SEAT León TFSI: 1150kg
The maximum compensation weight is 60 kg and is applied between a maximum of +40 kg to a minimum of -20 kg. When a model’s average is within the 0.3-second threshold in relation to the fastest model, no action is taken.
If a model is slower than the fastest model by more than 0.3s, 10 kg are deducted from the maximum compensation weight for every complete 0.1s more than the +0.3s threshold, up to a maximum of 60 kg.
When a model with less than 60 kg of compensation weight is within 0.3s of the fastest (reference) model, 10 kg are added to the current compensation weight per complete 0.1s within the 0.3s threshold.
The fastest (reference) model always carries the maximum compensation weight on board.

WTCC FOR CHARITY IN CURITIBA
For the fourth consecutive year the WTCC Race of Brazil will give an aid to the starving people of Brazil. Together KSO (championship promoter), HSBC (partner of the event), and the City Hall of Curitiba, repeated the initiative of offering free tickets to the public in exchange for two kilograms of food.
Fans wishing to attend the races on Sunday may collect their tickets by delivering the food to 13 different collection points scattered over the city, or at the racetrack on Sunday morning.
The food collected will be donated to the charity society Instituto Pró-Cidadania de Curitiba, which will distribute it to those in need.
In 2007 this humanitarian initiative resulted in the collection of 24 tonnes of food, that became 52 in 2008 and 43 last year.

FIA ETCC JOINS FIA WTCC AT OSCHERSLEBEN
The German event of the 2010 FIA European Touring Car Cup that was due to be held at the Oschersleben Motorsport Arena on April 18th, has been post-poned to September 5th on the same racetrack.
Meaning that the FIA ETCC rounds 5 and 6 will take place within the FIA World Touring Car Championship race meeting.
The FIA ETCC competitors will take part on Sunday in two separate races from the FIA WTCC’s. A detailed timetable will be unveiled soon.
The dates of the three other FIA ETCC events remain unchanged: 28th March at Braga, Portugal; 25th July at Salzburgring, Austria; 17th October at Franciacorta, Italy.

TRW SPONSOR OF THE WTCC SAFETY CAR
TRW, one of the world’s leading providers of automotive safety and partner to the leading car manufacturers has entered into a multi-year partnership to become the first ever sponsor of the FIA WTCC Safety Car.
"We are very excited about the agreement of the safety car sponsorship for the WTCC," said Mr Søren Kristensen, European Marketing Manager of TRW. "It fits our brand position ’safety where it matters the most‘ perfectly and we are confident that the sponsorship will help us convey the message of automotive safety in the aftermarket segment. The safety car sponsorship as well as the surrounding activities will play a key role in our marketing activities this year."
‚We are extremely happy to welcome a new addition to the WTCC commercial family and believe that the sponsorship of the Safety Car will help communicate TRW’s values of safety across their distribution channels throughout Europe and beyond," commented Jacques Raynaud, Vice-Chairman of Eurosport Group and Eurosport Events.

HUNGARIAN AMBITIONS IN THE WTCC
Zengö-Dension Team and Norbert Michelisz are the first team and driver from Hungary to committ full season to an FIA World Championship.
Michelisz, who won the 2009 SEAT León Eurocup, will be at the wheel of a SEAT León TDI, a car he already drove successfully in the FIA European Touring Car Cup last year at Braga, when he was classified third after winning the first race.
"It is a dream come true! It feels great that everything we worked on together becomes reality. I expect tough fights as there are many great drivers in the series, but I think that with our car and experience we can be competitive," said Nortbert Michelisz who recently received the 2009 Talent of the Year award from FIA President Jean Todt.
"It makes me proud that we are going to be the first Hungarian team in the WTCC thanks to our partners, especially Dension Ltd. who is the main sponsor. It is a huge challenge for us, however we have proven already that we are capable to be competitive," team principal Zoltán Zengö commented.

FREDY BARTH TO RACE FOR SUNRED
Swiss driver Fredy Barth lodged a last minute entry and will make his maiden appearance in the FIA WTCC at the Race of Brazil that will take place next week in Curitiba.
Barth, a 31-year old from Lucerne, will drive a SUNRED Engineering SEAT León TDI car.
After taking his first motorsport steps in single seater series including Formula Campus and Formel Volkswagen Deutschland, Barth switched to saloon cars becoming a successful driver in the SEAT León cups.
Last year he was classified third in the SEAT Eurocup, claiming one victory at Porto.

Superleague Formula by Sonangol selects nine racing teams for 2010

The final selection has now taken place for Teams to enter into the upcoming Superleague Formula by Sonangol campaign due to kick off at Silverstone on April 2nd.
The roster, increased by two from the end of last season, sees each squad fielding two football clubs each.

Due to compete alongside existing teams Atech, Alan Docking Racing, GU Racing, Reid Motorsport, Azerti and Epsilon are Emilio de Villota Motorsport and Laurent Redon, as well as one further outfit still to be announced.
Superleague Formula Competition Director Robin Webb said: “It’s obviously great news that we’ve increased the number of racing teams set to compete in the Superleague Formula by Sonangol Championship in 2010 . With each outfit now responsible for just two cars each. I’m confident that the quality of racing will increase still further thanks to the addition of the new teams and the huge prize fund which exceeds 5m€ this year. We’re also hopeful of announcing the final two clubs and race team within the next few days, as well as the 2010 driver roster. All I can say at the moment is that we’ve had considerable interest from drivers who have competed in many different categories including GP2 and A1GP and – of course – F1, which speaks volumes for the championship’s growing credibility within motorsport.”
Team Manager Emilio de Villota added: “After winning the Euroseries 3000 in 2009, we have no doubts that joining Superleague Formula by Sonangol is the best way forward for our team to continue. In 2010, Superleague Formula will make an important jump by doubling its number of races from 6 to 12, something which positions this championship at the forefront of international motorsport. It’s for this reason that Emilio de Villota Motorsport has decided to join its ranks, with the intention of making a global impact.”
GU Racing’s Günther Unterreitmeier said: “After a highly successful campaign last season with FC Basel and Olympiacos, we’re full of confidence heading into our third year of Superleague Formula. Retaining the same clubs obviously helps with continuity so I’m really hopeful of a strong season ahead”.

Jack Clarke makes Formula Two return

Jack Clarke

Briton aiming for championship title in second F2 campaign

21-year-old Jack Clarke, the stepson of former F1 racer Julian Bailey, is the latest addition to the 2010 FIA Formula Two Championship grid, after signing up to contest his second season in the series.

Clarke’s return to Formula Two follows a promising maiden campaign in 2009, where the Briton scored points finishes at Spa-Francorchamps and Oschersleben.

Prior to Clarke’s graduation to international motorsport, the Surrey racer was a consistent frontrunner in the UK Formula Palmer Audi Championship. He took a total of six wins and 19 podium positions in his two years of competition, and finished fourth in the overall standings in 2007. His single seater career began in 2006 when he competed in the Formula BMW UK series and the ultra competitive Formula BMW World Final, in Valencia, Spain.

Jack Clarke said: “I am delighted to be returning to Formula Two and I’m looking forward to taking advantage of the experience I gained in the first season. I have a lot of mileage and knowledge of the car and operation, and I feel this will certainly help. I am aiming for podiums and wins – last season I had less experience than the majority of drivers but now I expect to hit the ground running as I look to carry good momentum into my second campaign. It is a big boost to see Andy Soucek get a Formula One deal and I wouldn’t mind being where he is this time next year. It is a credit to him and the championship, and hopefully I will be that person to take the title and the F1 test in 2010.”

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: "I am delighted that Jack Clarke will be continuing in F2 during 2010. As with all the FPA graduates, F2 was a big jump last year but Jack put in some determined race performances and will undoubtedly be a lot more experienced, confident and competitive this season. Jack should be aiming for top six places and even podiums and he has the talent to achieve it."

Rally Internacional de Curitiba preview

THE CHALLENGE
After the snow and ice coated asphalt roads of Rallye Monte-Carlo in January, the Intercontinental Rally Challenge resumes in the Brazilian city of Curitiba from 4-6 March where the conditions could not be more contrasting.
The slippery mountainous lanes and sub-zero temperatures experienced on the IRC season opener will be replaced by high-speed gravel roads and a near tropical climate for Rally Internacional de Curitiba, the second round of the 12-event IRC series.
Residents of Brazil’s ’smiling city‘ will get an extra treat. Not only will the IRC event be fought out within easy reach of central Curitiba, the city will also host the opening round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
Just like the rally, the WTCC competitors will be based at Curitiba’s race circuit where the opening two rounds will take place on Sunday 7 March. Both series are promoted by Eurosport Events and will enjoy coverage on Eurosport, Europe’s largest television channel.
Rally Internacional de Curitiba, which became a round of the IRC for the first time last year, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2010. The event was originally called the Graciosa Rally in deference to the famous Graciosa Road, which connected Curitiba to the Atlantic Ocean several centuries ago.
Consisting of 15 stages covering 217 kilometres, the event is extremely compact compared to other rounds of the IRC. The total road distance is just short of 500 kilometres.
Friday’s opening leg is identical to 2009 and is made up of seven stages run to the west of Curitiba with a single visit to the permanent service park at Autodromo Curitiba shortly after midday. The first stage, Campo Magro, is run three times during the day with the Ouro Fino and Curitiba tests repeated once.
Saturday’s final leg, run to the north east of Curitiba, will feature eight stages and is set to finish with a spectacular superspecial stage in the district of Pinhais close to the service park. The spectator stage is purpose built and will pitch two drivers running side by side against each other. The bulk of Saturday’s stages will be used only once with the exception of Rio Pesqueiro and Quatro Barras, which will be run twice.
Unlike some gravel rallies, which are held over punishing rock-strewn terrain, the roads around Curitiba are smooth with numerous blind crests peppering the route. Although the surface is largely sandy, because the roads link small towns and villages, the surface is compact and in theory will not deteriorate when the stages are repeated.
Crews making the trip from Europe are due to arrive in Brazil over the weekend ahead of the two-day reconnaissance, which takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Following a shakedown test on Thursday morning and a ceremonial start, a run over the Super Prime Pinhais superspecial stage will determine the starting order for day one but won’t have a bearing on the overall result.

!cid_44575ccbcedd9c50cd0c61687a0cab54
Kris Meeke will be aiming to repeat his 2009 Curitiba win

THE COMPETITORS

With the exception of defending IRC champions Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle, none of the other IRC regulars making the trip to Brazil have contested the event before. In theory, that should give the Peugeot UK crew, who won in Curitiba last season, the advantage, particularly as Nagle describes the event as being one of the hardest on the calendar to master. However, what time they might be able to gain on the opening day is likely to be cancelled out on day two if they end up running first on the road and having to cope with the loose surface gravel.
Meeke has prepared for the trip to Brazil with a test in the south of France in early February where he was joined by Peugeot Portugal’s Bruno Magalhaes. Like Meeke, Magalhaes will use a Peugeot 207 S2000 in Brazil and, also like Meeke, his pre-event test was disrupted by snow.
Daniel Oliveira completes the ranks of Peugeot runners in his Stohl Racing 207 following his IRC debut in Monte Carlo. Despite hailing from Brazil, Oliveira, who took part on his first rally last season, has never rallied in his homeland before but will be able to count on his new co-driver, the vastly experienced Denis Giraudet, for support.
Mikko Hirvonen tops the IRC standings following his victory in Monte Carlo, which also marked a maiden triumph for M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta S2000. Because the Finn will spend the rest of the season contesting the World Rally Championship and will not compete in Curitiba, his title lead will be short-lived with Skoda Motorsport’s Juho Hanninen in pole position to capitalise in Brazil.
Hanninen is second in the IRC standings after finishing runner-up to Hirvonen on the IRC opener. His knowledge of the Curitiba stages has been garnered from watching on-board camera footage from last year’s event and a DVD supplied by the event organisers. He has likened the high-speed undulating roads and numerous crests to the stages in his native Finland and believes it won’t take him long to get up to speed.
His team-mate Jan Kopecky, second to Meeke in last year’s IRC standings, prepared for Brazil with a three-day test in Sardinia following a holiday to Mexico, which the Czech used to acclimatise to the high ambient temperatures that will be a feature of the rally. Hanninen also carried out his own three-day test, which Kopecky described as being very successful.
Guy Wilks, who won his last gravel rally in a Skoda, will drive a third Fabia S2000 in Brazil. The Skoda UK driver travelled to Sardinia for a pre-event test but reported the low ambient temperatures he encountered will mean he will use the shakedown to fine-tune his car’s set-up.
Of the other leading Brazilians on the 48-car entry, Rafael Tulio was the first local driver home last season, finishing ninth overall and claiming IRC 2WD Cup honours in the process. He has switched from his Peugeot 206 to a 207, albeit still only with two-wheel drive and a 1600cc engine.
Eduardo Scheer has also changed cars and will drive a Mitsubishi Lancer after claiming the Brazilian A6 class title in 2009 at the wheel of a Renault Clio. Oswaldo Scheer, the reigning Brazilian champion and Paulo Nobre will also line up in Lancers and will both be in contention for the top six. Nobre’s last event was the snow-based Rally Sweden in early February but he triumphed on his last two starts in Brazil.

Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo, Monaco 18-23 January 2010
Guy Wilks will be making his Curitiba debut

THE EXPECTATIONS

Jan Kopecky (Czech Republic), Skoda Fabia S2000: “My last rally on gravel was in Russia last July and after making two mistakes in Monte Carlo I need to get some points. For sure I would like to fight for first position but I can’t afford to make any more mistakes. From looking at the video of the stages they look really fast and I prefer the faster stages. We had a good test and did some good work with the suspension so I am confident.”
Kris Meeke (United Kingdom), Peugeot 207 S2000: “I’ve obviously been here before and I’ll be looking to capitalise on that but I’m up against some seriously quick guys who can learn the stages just as fast as I did. It was difficult to replicate the hot temperatures we’ll get in Brazil during our test in France because it snowed but I’m happy with the shape we’ve got the car in. However, I know Skoda has not been standing still so the competition is going to be really tough.”
Daniel Oliveira (Brazil), Peugeot 207 Super 2000: “This will be the first time I have competed on a rally in Brazil so I will hope to keep on with my learning and try to finish with a good result. Monte Carlo was really new to me. Snow, asphalt, ice, night time driving, Super 2000, a new co-driver…all at once! It was really a race that made me grow up as a driver and I can say that it was all very hard. But the will to step on the gas and not being able to was the hardest part. I knew that I had to finish and that I could not risk anything.”

It will offer a thrilling spectacle with a complete new experience of the event from every possible angle for spectators and TV viewers.

Thanks to the strong collaboration and support of the CAA, the first edition of the Golden Stage Rally will take place on Sunday 7 November, 2010, following the conclusion of the FxPro Cyprus Rally, the 12th and final round of this year’s IRC season.
Marcello Lotti, General Manager of the IRC commented:
"With this brand new concept, we want to create a new showcase for our entire sport and an opportunity for the professional and amateur drivers from many series to gather together and take a shot at glory and the prize purse. It will be open to all teams and drivers and the action promises to provide a great show in Cyprus, host venue of the final round of the IRC season and renowned as one of the world’s most challenging rally destinations".
President of the CAA Antonis Michaelides said:
"The Cyprus Rally has always been about breaking new ground to ensure that world rallying is as exciting and as entertaining as possible and with the addition of this innovative new event, we are confident that this year’s Cyprus Rally will be the most memorable yet. After the challenge of the Rally itself, to complete the weekend with this one-off ’shoot-out‘ between the world’s best will make it an unforgettable experience for fans and drivers alike."
Chairman of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation Alecos Orountiotis welcomed this new initiative:
"Cyprus has built an enviable reputation for hosting world-class sporting events and we are especially proud to be hosting this exciting new event. Our island boasts many strengths, including its outstanding climate, its beautiful scenery, and its extensive range of facilities, and we are sure that the many fans of motorsport who will watch this event will also become fans of our beautiful island."
Organised under the auspices of the CAA, regulations and full details of the stage layout of the Golden Stage Rally will be published soon, giving teams plenty of time to prepare themselves for what is sure to be a new highlight of the international rally season.

Ivan Samarin graduates to Formula Two

Ivan Samarin

Russian racer steps up to international motorsport for 2010

21-year-old Ivan Samarin will contest his maiden season in international single seater racing after signing up to join the 2010 FIA Formula Two Championship.

Samarin graduates to F2 after finishing as runner-up in Formula 3 Russia in 2008, which followed two championship-winning seasons in Formula 1600 Russia in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Ivan boasts a record of nine wins and 17 podiums in his 40 single seater races to date.

The Russian driver also enjoyed an encouraging debut run in Formula Two when he took part in the two day winter test at Portimao, Portugal in December. He set an impressive pace to end the opening day in the top six overall, and eventually finished the test just eight tenths of a second behind pacesetter Kazim Vasiliauskas.

Samarin is the second Russian driver to have competed in the revived FIA Formula Two Championship after Mikhail Aleshin finished third in last year’s campaign.

Ivan Samarin said: “I am really excited to be joining Formula Two for the 2010 season. The concept of the championship really appeals to me – of course the costs are key but more importantly it is great that every driver has the same car and opportunity. The car is fun to drive and it is definitely the logical step up from Formula 3. It will be tough but I am aiming for the top three – it is down to me and I hope to be challenging for podiums by mid-season.”

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: "Russia is producing some excellent drivers now. Mikhail Aleshin was terrific in Formula Two last year and Sergey Afanasiev did a great job in finishing as runner-up in International Formula Master. Ivan rightly has ambitions to be in F1 and we’re delighted to have him in the championship as a step towards this goal. F2 is the perfect place for Ivan to learn and develop his skills, against drivers in equal equipment. Being able to compare his performance with the fastest driver, every session, through the shared data concept and onboard camera aids uniquely available in Formula Two will help Ivan prove his undoubted talent and provide the opportunity for him to be at the front of the field."

Eine tonnenschwere Visitenkarte

945

Benjamin Bailly joins Formula Two for 2010

BAILLY

Belgian graduates after claiming Formul’Academy Euro Series title

Reigning Formul’Academy Euro Series Champion Benjamin Bailly has become the latest driver to enter the FIA Formula Two Championship for 2010.

Since making his karting debut in 2004, 19-year-old Bailly has cut a rapid ascent through the motorsport ranks. He finished third in the French Elite Championship in 2006, and claimed fifth overall in the premier Formula A World Karting Championship the following year.

Bailly enjoyed his most successful season to date in 2009, where a superb campaign saw him claim the overall Formul’Academy Euro Series championship with six wins, five podiums and three pole positions from the 14 races. He took victory in the second race in his debut weekend at Valencia and his run to the title also included a win in Oschersleben and a double victory at Monza – all circuits that F2 will visit in 2010.

The Belgian driver’s progression to F2 has been assisted by the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium National Team, which helps promote and develop young Belgian racing talent. The RACB National Team also includes Jerome D’Ambrosio, 2010 test driver for the Renault F1 team, as well as Formula Renault 3.5 Champion Bertrand Baguette and German F3 Champion Laurens Vanthoor.

Benjamin Bailly said: “Formula Two is a great championship and I’m delighted to be joining it for 2010. I like the concept of the series, and the fact that all the cars are equal means the driver makes all the difference – in other categories, if you’re not with a good team you can’t get the results. Andy Soucek also proved what a good learning step F2 is when he set the fastest time in his Formula One test in Jerez. I’m sure it will be a really competitive season, especially with the upgrades made to the car, but I proved I could be fast when I tested in F2 at Portimão, and I’m certainly targeting podiums and even race wins this year – a good season would be my way of thanking the team RACB officials!”

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: "I’m delighted Benjamin is joining us in Formula Two as our first Belgian driver.  I have seen the Formul’Academy Euro Series and it is clearly very competitive and based, like F2, on providing drivers will identical equipment.  Benjamin’s successes in Formul’Academy were due to his superior driving ability, not budget and team superiority, and I’m sure this experience will serve him well in F2.  Benjamin’s talent was obvious in the winter F2 tests when he was always towards the top of the time sheets whilst he also had a great approach to his racing, being intelligent, personable and hard working.  He has some very professional advisors and the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium is to be commended on providing vital financial support to one of their country’s most promising drivers in his quest to reach F1”.
