Volles Feld im ATS Formel-3-Cup 2009

776 logo

SAFARI RALLY PREVIEW

IRC

THE CHALLENGE
The legendary Safari Rally is confirmed as the third round of the IRC this year, providing an epic challenge to push drivers and cars to the maximum through the demanding gravel stages. IRC manufacturer points will be allocated on this round, but only drivers holding African competition licences will be awarded IRC driver points.
Based in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, the rally will take place from April 3-5, and will also host the second round of the FIA African Rally Championship. It last appeared on the IRC in 2007, when it formed the opening round of the series. In 2008 it obtained Supporter Event status. This season will herald the 57th running of the rally.
The rally will begin with a spectator stage in Nairobi on Friday April 3. For the first leg, crews will then head out to Nakuru and the Lake Elementaita region. The second leg will be based close to Nairobi around the small town of Athi River. The finish ceremony is due to take place on Sunday April 5.
The roads consist of gravel stages, with some watersplashes, which form a well-known highlight of the African classic. The weather is expected to be hot and dry, but as in all equatorial climates, sudden storms can strike that turn the stages into a mudbath.
The Safari Rally will see the participation of plenty of local experts this year, which means that a number of drivers will start the event with plenty of experience and a good chance of winning. The rally gets underway on Friday night, with a spectator superspecial stage near Nairobi, and finishes on Sunday. For further details and a full entry list, please visit the event’s official website: www.motorsportkenya.com.
THE COMPETITORS
The entry list on this year’s Safari Rally contains a high number of local Mitsubishis, with Kenyan Lee Rose leading the local entries in his Lancer Evo IX. Rose was well-placed on the most recent IRC event in Africa, the 2007 Safari Rally, until he was forced into retirement with a mechanical problem. Rose will be hoping for better luck this year as he leads the competitors off the start ramp. Other top drivers who originally took part in the 2007 Safari include Carl Tundo (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) and Asad Anwar (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII), who finished on the podium when the event was run in 2007 as part of the IRC.
South African sisters Megan and Lola Verlaque will drive a Super 2000 car on the Safari Rally this year: a Volkswagen Polo S2000, which is a former winner of the South African Rally Championship and has therefore proved itself to be well-suited to Africa’s demanding terrain.
Amongst the other foreign drivers is British businessman John Lloyd, who drives a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII and has made a speciality out of African endurance events. Lloyd’s main job is as a stockbroker in London, but he would love to add a strong result on the Safari Rally to his list of achievements.
There is also a solid entry on the IRC 2WD Cup on the Safari Rally, with no fewer than six Volkswagen Golf GTIs eligible to score manufacturer points. This presents a golden opportunity for the German manufacturer to secure points in the IRC 2WD Cup – just as Mitsubishi is well-placed for a comprehensive score in the main IRC series.
THE EXPECTATIONS
"The Safari Rally has always been a real classic on the world rally calendar and I am sure that this year’s challenge will once again provide competitors with an epic and memorable event. For years the Safari was known as the world’s toughest rally and it’s easy to see why. As well as some fantastic action, the route takes in some absolutely beautiful scenery, through the Great Rift Valley, so it’s common to see zebra and other wild animals along the route. The Safari is more than just a rally: it is a real experience."
Jean-Pierre Nicolas, IRC Motorsport Development Manager and 1978 Safari Rally winner
TV TIMES
Highlights of the Safari Rally will be broadcast on Eurosport after the event. All times are Central European Time (CET):

ING Renault F1 Team: 2009 Australian Grand Prix

2009 Australian Grand Prix Sunday

It was a mixed afternoon for the ING Renault F1 Team as Fernando Alonso finished in 6th position, while teammate Nelson Piquet retired from the race in the early stages.

In a race punctuated by a safety car period, Fernando steadily made up for ground that he had lost on the first lap. He enjoyed a combative race to emerge in the points during his final stint and benefited from the late race incidents. Having secured three points, the team now turns its attention to next week’s Malaysian Grand Prix determined to deliver a more competitive performance._O9T3684

Fernando Alonso P6
First stint: 19 laps, prime tyres (hard)
Second stint: 33 laps, prime tyres (hard)
Third stint: 6 laps, option tyres

Fernando: “6th place is not the best result, but in a way we have to be happy because we started the race in a difficult position and I was pushed wide at turn 1 onto the grass and so I dropped to the back of the pack. After that, it was difficult and so it’s great to score points. With what happened during the race, the incidents and the safety car, we managed to finish 6th. In terms of the overall results and looking at our competitors, we have to be happy with the result. With the KERS I didn’t feel a big difference and I was a little bit disappointed at how it worked. We also need to work on the tyres a bit more at the next race.”_95U8130

Nelson Piquet DNF
First stint: 19 laps, prime tyres (hard)

Nelson: “I was really happy because we were lucky at the beginning of the race to gain some positions. The car was good and I was having a consistent drive.  But when the safety car came out I started to have some problems with the brakes. I had a good restart and overtook Nico Rosberg, but when I touched the brakes again they were gone. I spun out and I was lucky I ended up in the gravel, so there was no damage to myself or the car. The car was not as competitive as we wanted it to be in the race but we were still running in the top 8. The Malaysian circuit should suit us better and I’m sure that we can get a good result there next week.”

Flavio Briatore, Managing Director ING Renault F1 Team
“The three points scored by Fernando are not a great consolation for what has been a disappointing weekend for us. We were just not competitive enough and our qualifying performance penalised us for the race. Fernando lost several positions at the start because of the first corner incident which he could not avoid. That said, our two drivers were consistent and tried to make the most of the situation. Nelson made a good start and his race was very promising, but a technical problem unfortunately brought his race to an end. It’s only the first Grand Prix and our intention is to work hard to fight back quickly, starting at the next Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering
“Nelson’s accident appears to have been caused by a problem with the brake system, although as yet we don’t know what that might be. It’s a shame because he was in a reasonable position. We are clearly not as competitive as we need to be and there is a lot of work to be done to get to the front.”

Remi Taffin, Head of Engine Operations
“A mixed result this afternoon with the retirement of Nelson and we will need to look into why he couldn’t finish. We would have been able to do something good with Nelson who had a great start to the race. I think he could have been on the podium, so it’s a shame. We finished 6th with Fernando and when you consider the level of competitiveness that we have shown this weekend, it’s not a bad result. We know that we have to do better and so we will take these points and work hard to try and get a strong result at the next race.”

BMW Sauber F1 Team – GP Australien – Rennen

Formula One 2009 Formula One 2009

Melbourne (AUS).
Nick Heidfeld: 11.
BMW Sauber F1.09-04 / BMW P86/9 (KERS)
Schnellste Runde: 1.28,283 min in Rd. 48 (fünftschnellste insgesamt)
Robert Kubica: Unfall
BMW Sauber F1.09-03 / BMW P86/9
Schnellste Runde: 1.27,988 min in Rd. 36 (zweitschnellste insgesamt)
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Direktor):
Willy Rampf (Head of Engineering):

Bridgestone Motorsport’s Australian Grand Prix Report

© FOTO ERCOLE COLOMBO

Bridgestone Potenza slick tyres made their grand prix return in the Australian Grand Prix where Jenson Button made the perfect debut for the Brawn GP team by using a medium-medium-super soft tyre strategy to win the first race of the season run to Formula One’s exciting new regulations.
Button took his race win leading team-mate Rubens Barrichello and Panasonic Toyota Racing driver Jarno Trulli across the line, however Trulli was later penalised for passing whilst behind the safety car, and fourth across the line Lewis Hamilton (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) was awarded third. Barrichello used the same strategy as Button, whilst Hamilton started on the super soft tyre and twice changed to the medium. The latest specification cars and Bridgestone’s slick tyres meant an exciting and challenging 58 laps in Albert Park with the different performance of Bridgestone’s two compounds one of the talking points of the event.
Q&A with Hirohide Hamashima – Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development
How was the first race of 2009 from Bridgestone’s perspective?
“Firstly, congratulations to Jenson Button and the Brawn GP team for winning and Rubens Barrichello for coming second in an exceptionally exciting race. Congratulations too, to the FIA for the new regulations and the teams for developing such exciting and quick new cars. This was a significant race as it shows that the changes for 2009 have made a big difference for Formula One.
Bridgestone’s slick tyres and our new allocation philosophy gave competitors a lot to think about and some managed better than others. Tyre strategy was crucial to making up places, and the key to getting a good result here was having a good setup with the super soft tyre as the performance of this tyre dropped off very quickly. The medium tyre was very robust and allowed good strategy and setup options for teams.”
What did you think of the different tyre strategies used?
“This was the first race for teams with our new tyres so there were many different approaches over the weekend. From Saturday’s data we knew that the super soft tyre was around 1.2 seconds faster than the medium over its first flying lap so those who started on the super soft had a good advantage at the beginning. However, those who used the super soft for their last stint benefitted from the improved track surface due to rubber laid during the race. We predicted that the super soft tyre would be around 5-6 seconds slower if it was used from the start of the race until half distance, which is why we did not see many long stints on this tyre.”

Bridgestone Potenza Driver Tyre Strategies
Rd.1 – Australian Grand Prix

In 2009, the tyre regulations stipulate that the two dry tyre specifications must be visibly
distinguishable from each other. At the Australian Grand Prix, the super soft compound Bridgestone Potenza tyres were marked with green bands on the sidewalls. The wet weather tyre was also marked with a green line in a groove.

Bridgestone’s super soft tyre provided Jenson Button with the grip he needed to get pole position for
the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne as the Brawn GP team made its grand prix qualifying debut in
perfect fashion.
Button took pole with a lap of 1min 26.202secs in hot weather at Albert Park, edging out team-mate
Rubens Barrichello by just over three hundredths of a second. Track conditions were improved from
Friday, with more rubber down, but teams and drivers still struggled to find the best compromises
with the exciting new cars and Bridgestone’s slick tyres.

Q&A with Hirohide Hamashima – Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development
What was significant about today’s running?
“Today was very significant for Formula One as Brawn GP have achieved pole position with Jenson
Button in their first grand prix, so congratulations to them. The past two days have been very difficult
for teams and drivers as they are learning about their new cars and our new tyres on the variable
track surface of Albert Park. We have seen many different tyre wear characteristics, even from the
same cars, which highlights the many different setups being tried. The performance life of the super
soft was improved today, however it was mainly used with low fuel so we would expect better
performance in any case. The medium continues to look like a strong race tyre.”

How difficult will strategy be with the new allocation philosophy?
“Tyre strategy should be very difficult and this is the desired outcome. We have heard drivers say that
the super soft is too soft for here and the medium is too hard, and that is by design. In conjunction
with the desires of the FIA to enhance overtaking opportunities, we are not bringing optimum tyres
here in terms of their performance, instead we are bringing tyres which make the teams and drivers
think hard before they use them. When to use the medium or the super soft tyres in the race is not
the only consideration, as the setup of the car has to be a compromise in the race to allow it to work
with both tyres. It will be a lot of work for the engineers and drivers, but should provide a lot of
entertainment for the spectators and viewers.”

SATA RALLY ACORES PRESENTED

SATA RALLY ACORES PRESENTED … AND ALL THE OTHER LATEST NEWS FROM THE IRC

IRC

The Sata Rally Acores, which will be the fourth round of the IRC from May 7-9, was recently presented at a press conference on San Miguel Island, which will host the event.
Representatives of the Azorean Government, event backers Grupo Desportivo Comercial (GDC) and the IRC were present at the press conference. The Sata Rally Acores, which previously formed part of the IRC Supporter Event scheme, is set to become a major tool of promotion of the Azorean Islands.
The presentation ceremony, held in the presence of major local dignitaries, underlined the values that the Sata Rally Acores shares with the IRC: namely heritage and the beauty of the landscape.
Francisco Coelho, the president of the organising committee, said: "Our event meets the standards of excellence needed to be a part of the IRC. It forms a great vehicle for the promotion of the Azorean Islands abroad."
Antonio Gomes de Meneses, the president of event sponsor Sata added: "This is a happy day for all Azoreans and for Sata, a company on its way to becoming a benchmark worldwide."
Xavier Gavory, the IRC’s General Coordinator, concluded: "The Sata Rally Acores is a valuable tool to promote the Azores due to the IRC’s increasing television presence in over 100 million households. We look forward to seeing everyone during the first weekend of May. "

VOLKSWAGEN TEAM TARGETING AZORES RETURN
The number of Super 2000 variants contesting the Sata Rally Azores in May looks set to grow after the René Georges Rally Sport squad confirmed it was planning to enter a Volkswagen Polo on the island event.
Designed by Volkswagen’s distributor in South Africa, the car has been developed by René Georges‘ eponymous team in Belgium over the last couple of seasons and made its debut in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in 2007.
Jack de Keizjer, the team co-ordinator, revealed he was confident at least one car would compete in the Azores with a second entry being planned for the Ypres Rally in Belgium in June.
"We are talking to some drivers at the moment but we cannot say exactly who for at least one week," de Keizjer said. "The plan is to do between five and six rallies with one car in Azores and then a second car in Ypres."
René Georges‘ team has subjected the Polo to extensive development over the winter and has prioritised enhancing the engine and suspension.
"It is not easy because we are only a private team against many big factory teams but we believe in this car and we are confident we can be in the top five when we come back to the IRC," said de Keizjer.
AUSTRIAN DRIVER CONSIDERS IRC CAMPAIGN
Andreas Waldherr could combine a programme of Intercontinental Rally Challenge events with his domestic championship campaign in Austria.
Waldherr, 40, will pilot the Volkswagen Polo Super 2000, previously driven by Bernd Casier in the IRC, on the remaining six rounds of this year’s Austrian championship, starting with the Lavanttal Rallye on March 27/28.
The car is one of two owned by Volkswagen Motorsport Austria, which has combined forces with the Belgian René Georges Rally Sport operation.
"We will provide technical support to Volkswagen Motorsport Austria in their challenge for the 2009 Austrian Rally Championship and two of our team members will be on all Austrian rallies," said René Georges Rally Sport team co-ordinator Jack de Keizjer.
"We are progressing with the car all of the time and doing our best to improve the power of the engine and the handling. Andreas is one of the favourites for the title this year and will have a strong challenge against the Skoda Fabia Super 2000 of Raimund Baumschlager."
Although Waldherr has yet to commit to any IRC events, de Keizjer added: "It is also possible he will compete on some rallies outside of Austria, including some selected IRC rounds."
If Waldherr join the IRC, he would double the Austrian representation in the series: Franz Wittmann Jr is contesting seven events in an Interwetten Racing Mitsubishi Lancer E9.
LEADING BRITISH DRIVER HOPES FOR IRC ENTRY
Guy Wilks, a two-time winner of the British Rally Championship, is planning to progress to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge this season.
The 29-year-old Briton actually contested the IRC-counting Rally Russia in a Honda Civic Type-R last July but was unable to continue in the JAS Motorsport-run car this season after Honda withdrew from international competition at the end of 2008.
Wilks has since linked-up with the Mellors Elliott Motorsport team, the British company responsible for Proton’s Satria Neo Super 2000 challenger, and completed a test in Wales last month. Proton became the seventh manufacturer to register for the IRC in March.
"I would like to do the IRC," said Wilks. "There are lots of opportunities in the IRC because it is attracting manufacturers who all seem to be very enthusiastic. I’ve tested the Proton for one day and I was very impressed with it. There are some areas where it can be improved but I am sure that will come. I’m convinced it can get some very good results in the IRC."
Wilks was a former rival of his fellow Briton Kris Meeke in the Junior World Rally Championship. Meeke has established himself as one of the IRC’s leading drivers after winning the second round of the series in Brazil last month.
SOUSA CONFIRMED IN PROCAR-RUN ABARTH
Portuguese driver Bernardo Sousa has confirmed he will take part on two rounds of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge this season in an Abarth Grande Punto run by the Italian Procar Rally Team.
Sousa, who was born on the Portuguese governed island of Madeira, is also contesting the Production Car World Rally Championship in the Italian-built machine. His IRC programme will include the rallies in Azores in May and Madeira at the end of July.
A spokesperson for the Procar team said: "He showed last year a considerable level of performance and it is a very important agreement we have defined."
Sousa, 21, has contested the Sata Rally Azores on two previous occasions but has twice failed to finish. Nevertheless, he has described the event as one of the best on the international calendar, despite the traditional rivalry that exists between Madeira and the Azores, another Portuguese territory.
"I love the rally," said Sousa. "The roads are in very good condition but in some places they are narrow with a lot of rocks. What is the most impressive is the countryside. It is beautiful and also very peaceful."
The event will begin with a shakedown on Thursday May 7. The two competitive legs take place on Friday May 8 and Saturday May 9.
SKODA ACE HANNINEN IS FIRST TO START PRACTICE EVENT
Skoda’s Finnish star Juho Hanninen will lead a field of more than 70 crews when the Valasska Rally gets underway in the Czech Republic on March 27.
Hanninen and his factory Skoda team-mate Jan Kopecky, who will be the fourth driver to leave the start ramp in Valasska, are using the event as part of the ongoing development of the Skoda Fabia Super 2000, which made its competition debut on the Monte Carlo Rally in January, the opening round of this year’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
The event consists of six special stages covering a total distance of 67.86 kilometres on Friday evening before the restart on Saturday when competitors face a further 94.90 kilometres of competitive action split between eight stages.
Skoda’s motorsport director Michal Hrabanek said: "We appreciate having another opportunity to test the vehicle in a real competition after the Monte Carlo Rally. Like on the previous occasion, we want to move a few steps forward with our vehicle development efforts, and although the main purpose of our appearance at the Valasska Rally is to test the new vehicle, our ambitions also include achieving the best possible result."
Czech Roman Kresta is set to provide the Skoda drivers with their closest opposition. The former World Rally Championship star is due to drive a Peugeot 207 Super 2000 run by the Mogul Racing Team.
Skoda’s next appearance in the IRC will be the Sata Rally Azores in May. It will enter a further four events with Rally Russia in July and Barum Rally Zlin in its native Czech Republic in August also likely to be included on the schedule.

WTCC : LADA SPORT MAKE STEADY PROGRESS

The LADA Sport team are making steady progress on their first season as a WTCC registered manufacturer.
Although the Russian cars are still struggling to be on the pace with the other works cars, the results achieved in Mexico proved that the team’s efforts are giving the first fruits.
"We had a lot of fun in Puebla, and showed our potential. It is clear that we still have some way to go, but we have clearly identified the main areas to be improved. We got three cars to the end of the second race, which was testament to our reliability, and gained a lot of useful information. We are now looking forward to Marrakech; the track is new to everybody and this can help a new team like ours," said team leader Viktor Shapovalov.
And Jaap van Lagen echoed: "Our car is basically good but we are lacking power on the straights, which is making the difference. The Mexican weekend was a very encouraging experience and we should have some improvements for Morocco, such as a new engine head."

ZANARDI HAPPY WITH FIRST POINTS
BMW Team Italy-Spain’s Alessandro Zanardi scored his first points of the season in Mexico, coming home sixth in the Puebla’s second race.
The Italian driver’s car suffered from an alternator problem during the first race that resulted in a power steering failure in the last seven laps.
"To finish that race in ninth position was an outstanding result," team manager Roberto Ravaglia commented. "Alessandro put in an enormous physical effort, as he uses the steering wheel also to accelerate."
"Once more my team did something magic for me. In the 15 minutes of repair time between the races the boys managed to change the alternator, the exhaust, the bumper and more parts. They only forgot to adjust my mirrors. Giving them this result after what they did, is one of the highlights of my racing career, as I was able to compete with the other BMW cars. This gives us an amazing boost for Marrakech," said Zanardi.

CHEVROLET OFFER TEST TO IFM DRIVERS
Chevrolet have signed a partnership with International Formula Master to offer IFM drivers the chance to test a WTCC Chevrolet Cruze racing car.
The test session will see at least one of this year’s top IFM drivers awarded the chance to get behind the wheel of the 2009 WTCC Cruze WTCC.
"We are looking forward to seeing a Formula Master driver at the wheel of one of our cars", said Chevrolet Europe Motorsport Manager Eric Nève. "The Series is a strong part of our weekend, and we always keep an eye on how well its young drivers are doing. It will be good to see how one of them fares at the wheel of our world touring car. This partnership, which will give additional visibility to the new Cruze, fits perfectly with Chevrolet’s fresh and dynamic image".

Bridgestone Motorsport’s Friday Update

AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX F1/2009 - MELBOURNE 27/03/2009 -
© FOTO ERCOLE COLOMBO

For the first time in twelve seasons, Bridgestone Potenza slick racing tyres graced a Formula One car at a grand prix as the 2009 season got underway in Melbourne, Australia for the ING Australian Grand Prix. AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg was the fastest man in both of the two Friday practice sessions at Albert Park, for round one of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship. Rosberg set a 1min 26.687secs using the medium compound in the first session with team-mate Kazuki Nakajima the second fastest, also using the medium, and Kimi Raikkonen (Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro) the third quickest, using the super soft. In the later session Rosberg set a 1min 26.053secs, with Rubens Barrichello (Brawn GP) second quickest and Jarno Trulli (Panasonic Toyota Racing) third quickest, all top three drivers using the super soft. Outlining the close competition in prospect for the season ahead, just over two seconds covered the entire field in this second practice session. Both sessions were held later in the day than previously at this event, due to the race start time change to 17:00 hrs on Sunday. The first session started at 12:30 hrs, and the second started at 16:30 hrs. The notoriously fickle Melbourne weather provided pleasant temperatures, but some way off the heat of last year. Track conditions were as expected early in the race meeting, with the lower levels of grip provided by the surface due to it only being used once a year for motor racing activity.   Hirohide Hamashima – Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, said: “Today was very exciting as, for the first time, we saw all the 2009 specification cars on track at a grand prix weekend, and it was also a very nostalgic day as we saw slick tyres in Melbourne. The first day of the season is always difficult for drivers, and the Albert Park circuit was quite dirty and slippery, as we expected. The super soft tyre will provide the big challenge for the weekend, and it performed largely as wanted, with an absolute lap time around a second faster than the medium, and quite rapid progression towards increasing lap times as it deteriorates. The dirty track did mean more graining than we predicted, but this will improve with a cleaner track and more rubber laid. The medium compound was very robust and will certainly be the main race tyre. As far as track conditions are concerned we expect more grip tomorrow and on Sunday.”
