Superleague Formula Series evaluating new chassis supply

Superleague Formula Series could introduce a brand new chassis in time for the 2013 season with steps already being taken to find a suitable partner.

With the current crop of bespoke single-seaters, built by Elan Motorsport Technologies in time for the inaugural 2008 campaign, due to enter their fifth year of competition in 2012, the nations cup series feels the time is right to begin evaluating its next generation of racing cars.

Any new chassis will have a tough act to follow: the crowd-pleasing DP09’s distinctive character, screaming V12, 750bhp and push-to-pass systems has ensured on-track action is seldom anything less than exhilarating as drivers battle wheel-to-wheel.

While Superleague Formula will be consulting a number of proven suppliers in the coming months, championship officials recently visited world-renowned racing car firm Lola where they were treated to a glimpse of its World Senior Car.

Over seven decades the British engineering company has gained a wealth of experience and an impeccable reputation for building both single-make and multi-competitive racing cars spanning Formula 1, IndyCar, F3, A1GP and Formula Nippon.

Combining state-of-the-art F1 technology with Lola’s expertise in delivering cost-effective one-make chassis, the World Senior Car has the potential to perfectly fulfill Superleague Formula’s requirements.

Steve Farrell, Superleague Formula Technical Director: “Lola Group has an incredible pedigree in international motorsport which made them the ideal starting point in Superleague Formula’s search for a new car. The championship has always been different from the mainstream. Roberto Merhi neuer Euro-Serie-Champion

Große Freude in Valencia: Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam) sicherte sich drei Rennen vor Saisonschluss den Fahrertitel in der Formel 3 Euro Serie. Auf dem 4,005 Kilometer langen Circuit Ricardo Tormo gewann er mit 17,436 Sekunden Vorsprung vor Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam). Rookie-Champion Nigel Melker (Mücke Motorsport) komplettierte als Dritter das Podium. Für den 20-jährigen Merhi ist es der erste Titel im Formel-Sport.
Roberto Merhi übernahm vom Start weg die Führung und fuhr einem sicheren Triumph entgegen. Für ihn war es der neunte Sieg in diesem Jahr. Hinter dem neuen Champion folgte Dani Juncadella, der in den Schlussrunden dem Druck seiner Hintermänner Nigel Melker und Felix Rosenqvist (Mücke Motorsport) standhielt und Zweiter wurde. Da Marco Wittmann (Signature) das Rennen als Fünfter beendete, rangiert Juncadella nun punktgleich mit dem zweitplatzierten Wittmann auf Rang drei der Gesamtwertung.
Roberto Merhi (Prema Powerteam): „Ich freue mich riesig, dass ich hier bei meinem Heimrennen in Valencia und auch noch mit einem Sieg den Titel gewonnen habe. Es ist ein sehr wichtiger Schritt in meiner Karriere und es war zusammen mit dem Sieg in der ‚FIA Formula 3 International Trophy’ ein fantastisches Jahr für mich. Im Rennen heute war ich vor allem in den letzten Runden richtig nervös, obwohl ich ungefährdet in Führung lag.“
Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam): „Ich möchte Roberto zum Titelgewinn gratulieren, er hat es absolut verdient. Ich selbst bin glücklich über den zweiten Platz in diesem Rennen, mehr ging heute für mich nicht. Zwischendurch hatte ich Probleme mit der Kupplung und dachte schon, dass ich es nicht bis ins Ziel schaffen werde. Nun möchte ich beim Finale in Hockenheim den Vize-Titel holen.“
Nigel Melker (Mücke Motorsport): „Roberto war immer schnell und hat nur sehr wenige Fehler gemacht. Deshalb hat er verdient den Titel gewonnen. Mein Start in das Rennen war gut, aber als ich in der ersten Runde einen kleinen Fehler machte, schlüpfte Dani durch. Als er dann später offenbar Probleme mit seinem Auto hatte, konnte ich wieder den Anschluss herstellen. Leider hatte ich keine Möglichkeit, ihn zu überholen.“

Martin Tomczyk jubelt als neuer DTM-Champion

Valencia. Die populärste internationale Tourenwagenserie hat einen neuen Champion: Martin Tomczyk (D) sicherte sich im spanischen Valencia mit einem dritten Platz hinter Rennsieger Mattias Ekström (S) und dem zweitplatzierten Portugiesen Filipe Albuquerque (beide Audi) den DTM-Titel 2011. Mit 64 Punkten in der Gesamtwertung liegt Audi-Pilot Tomczyk vor dem letzten Rennen der Saison in Hockenheim uneinholbar vor seinem Konkurrenten Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz, 51 Punkte). „Das ist einfach unglaublich. Zu Beginn der Saison hat keiner mit mir gerechnet und jetzt bin ich Champion“, jubelte der 29 Jahre alte Rosenheimer und über Funk ließ er sein Team wissen: „Der Titel ist für euch.“ Mit einem Audi A4 DTM des Jahrgangs 2008 kürte sich Tomczyk auf dem Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo zum 12. Champion der „neuen“ DTM.
Tomczyk ging vom zehnten Startplatz ins Rennen und arbeitete sich im neunten DTM-Lauf der Saison kontinuierlich nach vorn. Als er auf Platz drei die Ziellinie überquerte, riss er die Arme hoch, jubelte und vergoss im Auto einige Freudentränen: „Die letzten Runden kamen mir unendlich lang vor. Ich habe mir die karierte Flagge herbeigewünscht, damit mein Traum wahr werden konnte.“ Auch seine Verlobte, die Moderatorin Christina Surer, freute sich mit Tomczyks Bruder und Manager Tobias in der Box von Audi Sport Team Phoenix. Solch eine Freude war seinem Konkurrenten Bruno Spengler in seiner AMG Mercedes C-Klasse nicht vergönnt, denn der Kanadier gewann den Titel nach einem engen Finale 2010 erneut nicht. Mit Platz sieben als bester Mercedes-Benz-Pilot in Valencia musste er seine Titelträume begraben: „Das Championat haben wir nicht heute verloren, sondern bereits in den Rennen davor zu viele Punkte gelassen. Wir haben hart gekämpft, aber heute war einfach nicht mehr drin.“


Markenkollege Ekström, der in Valencia seinen dritten Saisonsieg einfuhr, gönnt Tomczyk den Titel von Herzen: „Ich kenne Martin seit elf Jahren und er hatte in der Vergangenheit viel Pech. Jetzt freue ich mich sehr für ihn.“ Vor 16.000 Zuschauern am Wochenende gelang es Tomczyk, seine Erfolgsserie fortzusetzen: Als einziger Fahrer konnte er bei neun Rennen in die Punkte fahren, er gewann 2011 drei Rennen (Spielberg, Lausitzring, Brands Hatch) und stand zudem vier Mal auf dem Podium (Zandvoort, Norisring, Oschersleben, Valencia).
Die Kristall-Trophäe für den Champion erhält Tomczyk beim Saisonfinale in seiner deutschen Heimat. Das zehnte und damit letzte DTM-Rennwochenende der Saison 2011 findet vom 21. bis 23. Oktober in Hockenheim statt.
Aufgrund eines schwebenden Berufungsverfahrens ist das Ergebnis des neunten Laufes ab Position fünf unter Vorbehalt. Für den DTM-Titel von Tomczyk hat die Berufungsentscheidung allerdings keine Relevanz.
Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Leiter Technik Audi Sport: „In den letzten Rennen war eine hohe Anspannung. Wir hatten natürlich gehofft, dass wir heute alles klar machen. Dies ist ein fantastischer Tag für Audi, weil wir mit Martin und natürlich auch mit Mattias, Filipe und all den anderen Fahrern feiern können. Martin war während der ganzen Saison sehr konzentriert und hat am Ende den Titel aus eigener Kraft gewonnen. Ich gratuliere ihm ganz herzlich.“
Norbert Haug, Motorsportchef Mercedes-Benz: „Zunächst einmal herzlichen Glückwunsch an Martin und die Audi-Mannschaft. Am Ende bin ich Sportsmann, man muss auch verlieren können. Ich stelle mich heute hundertprozentig vor mein Team. Alle haben hart gearbeitet. Leider haben wir auf Martin in den letzten Rennen 20 Punkte gelassen. Ich möchte die Gelegenheit nutzen, grundsätzlich einmal Danke zu sagen an alle, die dafür gesorgt haben, dass die DTM in den letzten Jahren überlebt hat: Audi, Mercedes-Benz, der DMSB und die ITR. Jetzt freue ich mich auf das letzte Rennen in Hockenheim und den Neueinstieg von BMW im nächsten Jahr.“

F2 racer secures prize test drive with the Williams F1 Team at home round

Italian driver Mirko Bortolotti has clinched the 2011 FIA Formula Two Championship in style at the Monza circuit in Italy today (Sunday 2 October), taking a dominant victory in round 14 to secure the title and a prize test drive with the Williams Formula One team.

The 21-year-old secured the F2 title on home soil and with one round of the season remaining, following in the footsteps of 2009 winner Andy Soucek and last year’s champion Dean Stoneman.

As his prize for claiming the Formula Two crown, Bortolotti will earn a full test with the Williams F1 team at Abu Dhabi in November. He will also qualify for an FIA Superlicence, required to compete in Formula One Grands Prix.

Bortolotti headed into this weekend with a 60-point advantage over his nearest rival Christopher Zanella. After a superb second place in race one, he needed just two points from today’s contest, which he started from pole position.

He duly wrapped up the title in dramatic fashion by recording a lights-to-flag victory, his fifth of the season so far, in front of his home fans.

Mirko Bortolotti said: “I don’t have words to explain how I feel right now, I think I have to realise it. I’m just so happy. It’s just amazing for me. I cannot say anything else, all I can say is that we did a good job, the car was perfect and I have to send my congratulations to the whole F2 team because obviously they are doing a great job.”

Looking ahead Bortolotti said: “I don’t know what’s going to happen for 2012, we will have see. First of all I have to think about my Williams F1 test, and we’ve got another F2 race in Barcelona too. I managed to win this prize so I will try to prepare myself as best as I can. I had the luck in the past to get some Formula One tests so maybe that could help me but of course everything changed this year so it will be interesting to learn all the new parts that the Formula One car has and try to give the best I can and enjoy the day.”

He added: “We will be celebrating for sure! We are in Italy so to win the championship here is obviously a dream come true and for sure I will party tonight!

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: “Mirko has done an absolutely superb job this season and is a very worthy 2011 F2 champion. From the opening round at Silverstone, he has shown outstanding talent and pace in a very competitive field and has really dominated since then, sealing the championship with one round still remaining. I am very confident he is going to make a big impression when he claims his Williams F1 test drive in Abu Dhabi, and that F2’s high standard of competition has given him the best possible preparation for the next step in his career.”

Sir Frank Williams, Founder and Team Principal, added: “Mirko Bortolotti is another worthy winner of the F2 Championship. We have obviously followed his progress this season and witnessed some impressive performances, including points-scoring finishes in every round and five race wins. We are sure Mirko will learn a lot from the test day he now has with us in Abu Dhabi later this year and we look forward to seeing what he can do in a Formula One car."

The 2011 FIA Formula Two Championship continues later this month with the final round in Barcelona where the fight for the two runner-up spots, where both receive a GP2 test, remains very close.

DAVID SALOM ROZA EL PODIUM EN MAGNY COURS

Este fin de semana se ha disputado en Magny Cours la penúltima prueba del Campeonato del Mundo de Supersport.
El joven mallorquín ha luchado hasta la última vuelta y ha finalizado la carrera en cuarta posición a menos de una décima de segundo del tercer puesto.
Con una clasificación general tan apretada, el equipo Kawasaki Motocard ha trabajado duro para defender sus posiciones y David Salom ha firmado una gran remontada.
Salom lograba el sexto puesto de parrilla con un tiempo de 1,41,6 y un buen ritmo con el que esperaba luchar por los puestos de cabeza.
Nuevos problemas para Salom en la salida donde perdía dos posiciones y pasaba octavo en la primera vuelta. Luchando en un grupo contra su principal rival del Campeonato, Fabien Foret.
Salom y Foret adelantaban posiciones a partir del séptimo giro, Salom superaba a Foret y consegúia distanciarse marcando su propio ritmo de carrera.
En el ecuador de la carrera comenzaba la gran remontada de David que rodaba al mismo ritmo que el grupo de cabeza y se marcaba como objetivo alcanzar al tercer clasificado.
A falta de tres vueltas para finalizar, Salom cazaba a Davies y lo superaba alcanzando la cuarta plaza, y acercándose al tercer clasificado que rodaba cláramente más lento que Salom.
David cruzaba la menta a menos de una décima de segundo del pódium después de una increíble remontada.
En la clasificación general, David está en cuarta posición empatado a puntos con el tercero y a tan sólo ocho puntos del segundo. Una vez decidido el Campeón de la categoría, queda en juego el subcampeonato que se decidirá en la última prueba de la temporada en Portimao (Portugal) el próximo día 16 de octubre.

Luis Salom: G.P. Japón – Carrera

El equipo RW Racing GP y su piloto Luis Salom vuelven a casa con las manos vacías del Gran Premio de Japón, que se ha celebrado este fin de semana en el circuito de Motegi. En los entrenos cronometrados del sábado sólo pudo completar cuatro vueltas debido a una pequeña caída, situándose en la cuarta linea de la parrilla de salida. En el warm up del domingo Luis estuvo haciendo muy buenos tiempos, incluso en una de las vueltas iba con dos “cascos rojos” (indican que el piloto está marcando el récord en cada uno de los parciales) aunque en el último parcial un piloto más lento impidió que marcara el mejor crono. Aún así consiguió el sexto mejor tiempo.

Sabiendo que podía estar luchando por los puestos de honor, el piloto balear tendría que tomar algunos riesgos para no perder el contacto con los pilotos más rápidos en la salida. Al apagarse el semáfono Luis hizo una buena salida, pero al abrir gas la moto le hizo un caballito, momento en el que le pasaron un montón de pilotos. Luis empezó a remontar posiciones rápidamente, pero al final de la segunda curva se encontró con Josep Rodríguez, un piloto que iba mucho más lento, embistiéndole por detrás. El mallorquín intentó salvar la caída, tumbando al máximo, pero la moto se fue de atrás, produciéndose la caída.

Luis se disculpó con Rodríguez y ambos pilotos intentaron reincorporarse a la carrera. Josep lo hizo rápidamente, pero poco después se retiraba a los boxes. Luis en cambio, tardaba mucho más en retomar la carrera, ya que la moto se quedó ahogada.

Salom se reincorporaba a la pista en la trigésima posición, a más de 38 segundos del último clasificado, y con el pedal del embrague torcido comenzó una remontada que lo llevó hasta la 23ª plaza.

Marlon Fluit (Director): “Este resultado no fue lo que el equipo había previsto y aunque nadie puede estar satisfecho Luis ha salido ileso de las dos caídas y se ha mantenido la novena posición del campeonato. Si hubiéramos sumado algunos puntos estaríamos más cerca de conseguir la octava plaza,”

Luis Salom: “Lo único positivo es que no me hice daño en el accidente. Estuve pensando en dejar la carrera, pero si hubiera cogio el camino de los boxes estaba seguro que no cogería ni un sólo punto. He preferido seguir en la pista, ya que a veces se producen circunstancía que puedes aprovechar, nunca se sabe. Lo siento mucho por el equipo, que ha trabajado muy duro todo este fin de semana. Dos caídas en dos días, que encima han afectado en gran medida en el resultado, no es bueno, pero en este deporte a veces hay que tomar ciertos riesgos para conseguir algo. Ahora vienen dos circuitos (Phillip Island y sepang) que están entre mis favoritos, y es allí donde tenemos que conseguir mejorar esta novena plaza. Quiero terminar bien la temporada, para que me sirva para olvidar este tipo de carreras. Quiero aprovechar esta ocasión para desear a Sergio Gadea, una pronta recuperación, y que podamos verlo lo antes posible en los circuitos.”

En una semana el equipo de Roelof Waninge, que dirige Marlon Fluit con Hans Spaan como ingeniero jefe, volará al hacia el este, donde el 16 y 23 de octubre se celebran los grandes premios de Australia y Malasia, para acabar la temporada en el Circuito de Valencia el 6 de noviembre.

Joan Perelló: G. P. Japón – Carrera

El piloto balear Joan Perelló ha participado este domingo en la 15ª prueba del Campeonato del Mundo de 125GP, que se ha celebrado en el Circuito de Motegi, en Japón. Este gran premio, que se debía haber celebrado el pasado mes de abril, fue aplazado al 2 de octubre debido al terremoto y posterior tsunami que asoló el país nipón, y que causo graves daños a la central de Fukushima, situada a 120 kilómetros del circuito.

El joven piloto, que se está preparando en el Centro de Tecnificación de Motociclismo de la Escuela Balear de l’Esport, se clasificó en la posición 29, tomando la salida desde la décima linea de la parrilla.

 

Como ya viene siendo habitual, Joan hizo una carrera de menos a más, y en pocas vueltas ya se había situado en la 26ª posición. Siguió progresando hasta llegar a la 21ª plaza, pero la perdió en el penúltimo giro, acabando 22º.

En apenas una semana el piloto, junto a su equipo el Matteoni Racing y su manager Eduardo Perales, se desplazarán al circuito Phillip Island, para disputar el Gran Premio de Australia, que se celebra el 16 de octubre.
