MULLER BACK ON POLE ONE YEAR AFTER

WTCC QUALIFYING REPORT

Former champion Yvan Muller will be on pole for Race 1 in Curitiba tomorrow, for the second year in succession. In a closely fought session the top seven cars ended within 0.2 seconds of each other. Chevrolet dominated the session with Alain Menu (1:23.829) and Rob Huff (1:23.833) being placed third and fourth. Only Jordi Gené in his SEAT León TDI managed to split the team mates by jumping to second with his lap of 1:23.757 in the dying seconds.

Q1- Rob Huff dominated Q1 smashing the circuit qualifying record of 1:24.196 with his early lap of 1:23.831. Despite being the first driver of the weekend to lap in under 1:24 he continued to push, beating his own time in the final minutes to sail through to Q2 with a time of 1:23.630.
His Chevrolet team mates Alain Menu (1:23.730) and Yvan Muller (1:23.923) also jumped up the order in the final minutes to make it a Chevrolet top three. Augusto Farfus (1:24.006) was the top BMW racer with Norbert Michelisz putting in a great lap in his SEAT León TDI, while in danger of dropping out the top ten, to post the fifth quickest time of 1:24.019.
Tiago Monteiro and Tom Coronel were left to fight for the final spot in Q2 and eventually, with a lap of 1:24.558, the Dutchman kicked his team-mate off by only four thousandths of a second.
Stefano D’Aste’s time of 1:25.153 jumped him ahead of Darryl O’Young to lead the Independents‘, claiming the 13th position overall.

Q2- As the top ten drivers headed into the final 10-minute shoot out, Chevrolet was quick to assert their dominance with Muller, Menu and Huff topping the timesheet. As the chequered flag approached a nine-car slipstream of cars headed out on track with only Farfus remaining in the pits. Muller improved to secure his pole position while Gené’s final lap of 1:23.757 claimed a front row start for SR-Sport.
A mistake from the consistently quick newcomer Michelisz meant he ran wide through the Curva da Vitoria hindering his own, Menu’s and Priaulx’s final run, although the Swiss managed to salvage third ahead of team mate Huff. Reigning champion Tarquini claimed fifth ahead of Priaulx and Farfus, a disappointing result after the BMW 320si’s had been setting the pace for most of the weekend.
Danish racer Michel Nykjær posted the eighth quickest time and will start Race 1 tomorrow as the best of the rookies, while Coronel and Michelisz rounded out the top ten.

Meeke holds overnight lead in Curitiba

Kris Meeke is on course to repeat his Rally Internacional de Curitiba victory of last year after winning six of the seven special stages on the first leg of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier in Brazil today (Friday 5 March).
The defending IRC champion holds a 32.7-second lead over fellow Briton Guy Wilks heading into Saturday’s second leg after making the most of his knowledge of the high-speed gravel stages: Meeke is the only leading IRC regular who has previous experience of the event.
Meeke, 30, also benefited from choosing a hard compound tyre for the afternoon loop of stages when his rivals all opted for softer rubber in the mistaken belief it would rain. However, he received extensive praise from his co-driver Paul Nagle and his team boss Marc van Dalen following a faultless performance behind the wheel of his Peugeot UK-backed 207 Super 2000.
Further evidence of Meeke’s dominance was provided by the fact he was the only leading driver to carry two spare tyres in his car all day, which meant he was saddled with an extra 40 kilograms of weight.
Wilks said his countryman’s superior knowledge of the stages had been the difference between the pair although he admitted dropping approximately five seconds on the third stage of the morning when his car’s spare intercom lead became detached and momentarily blocked his vision. He said his Skoda UK Motorsport-run Fabia S2000 had performed well all day, however.
Jan Kopecky reached the second service halt at Curitiba’s race circuit this evening in third overall in the first of two Skoda Motorsport-run Fabias. The Czech reported the rear of his car was sliding too much on the morning stages, which were slightly damp in places following overnight rain. He also bemoaned his lack of recent running on gravel for not being closer to Meeke and Wilks in the overall standings. Otherwise he said he was satisfied to be in contention for a podium finish tomorrow.
Team-mate Juho Hanninen holds fourth overnight after spending much of the day recovering from the left-rear puncture he picked up two kilometres into the first stage of the day. Because he was only carrying one spare tyre, the Finn had to be extra cautious over the next three stages of the morning loop before returning to service. An extra spare tyre for the afternoon’s three stages helped his confidence although the decision to run soft compound rear tyres in the afternoon caused a bout of oversteer and triggered a handling imbalance.
Bruno Magalhaes was fourth at midday service but lost time on stage five when his Peugeot’s front-right tyre became partially detached from the rim. Although it remained inflated, a change at the end of the stage was required and meant he had to tackle the next two tests with no spare and dropped behind Hanninen as a result of his cautious approach.
Daniel Oliveira achieved his aim of completing the leg without incident as he continues to build his experience of his Stohl Racing Peugeot 207. The young Brazilian had never driven the car on gravel before Thursday’s shortened shakedown. While he conceded he still needs to find more speed he said he had learned plenty during the day alongside new co-driver Denis Giraudet.
Eduardo Scheer, the son of Brazilian rallying legend Oswaldo, won the A6 class in Curitiba last year. Now armed with a four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer, Scheer impressed throughout the day to hold a slender advantage over Bolivian driver Eduardo Peredo in seventh overall.
Peugeot 207 driver Marcos Tokarski is in control of the IRC 2WD Cup with veteran Brazilian Ulysses Bertholdo in second in a similar 1600cc 207.

Kris Meeke leads in Brazil after opening day of action

DRIVER QUOTES

Kris Meeke (United Kingdom), Peugeot 207 S2000, first overall: "Apart from a big hit going over a jump at some crossroads on the third stage everything else has been perfect today. I was a bit too cautious over the jump when the stage was repeated and lost a bit of time. Choosing the hard compound tyre was the right thing to do because it stayed dry and gave me more precision and stability. Now it’s down to me managing my lead tomorrow but I’ve been in this position before so I know what I’ve got to do."
Guy Wilks (United Kingdom), Skoda Fabia S2000, second overall: "Kris got a jump on us this morning and that’s down to his experience of the stages and nothing to do with anything I’ve done wrong or the car. We should have gone for the harder tyre in the afternoon but I don’t think it made a massive difference. Kris has now got to run first on the road tomorrow so we’ll keep the pressure on and see what happens."
Jan Kopecky (Czech Republic), Skoda Fabia S2000, third overall: "It’s been a long time since I’ve done a very fast gravel event like this so I have to be satisfied that I am with a chance of a podium tomorrow. It took time to get used to the stages today because of the speed but the roads are going to be a bit more technical tomorrow and I think it will be easier to adapt to."

FARFUS TOPS FIRST TEST IN BRAZIL

Local man Augusto Farfus posted the fastest lap during today’s test as the 2010 WTCC season officially got underway at the Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba. The Brazilian topped the timesheets in his BMW 320si at the halfway point, before the session was briefly halted when Stefano D’Aste lost the back end of his BMW 320si and ended beached in the gravel at turn four.
In the dying moments of the session, Farfus bettered his earlier time clocking a 1:24.243 to remain on top. His BMW Team RBM team mate Andy Priaulx (1:24.732), who had led the session at the start, ended in third.
Alain Menu was the fastest of the Chevrolet men, driving his Cruze to the second quickest time with a lap of 1:24.732. Team mates, Yvan Muller (1:24.805) and Rob Huff (1:24.960) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Reigning champion Gabriele Tarquini was quickest of the SEAT cars, posting a lap time of 1:25.308 to end the day sixth. His SR-Sport team mate Jordi Gené’s session ended early as he suffered problems with the steering box on his SEAT León TDI.
Hungarian youngster Norbert Michelisz was the best of the newcomers, posting an impressive seventh fastest time (1:25.625) and placing ahead of experienced drivers like Tom Coronel and Tiago Monteiro.

Augusto Farfus set the fastest lap on his home racetrack today

THEY SAID. THEY SAID..
Augusto FARFUS: "I am happy. We took advantage of the red flag and pitted to make some changes to the car, which were very effective. It was a good feeling to drive around so quickly. Now I have set the pace. I’m sure that from tomorrow the others will be closer but I wish to stay ahead if I can."
Alain MENU: "It was a session to get used to the track again. For the time being we are competitive as I am four tenths slower than Farfus, who was very quick. The car has too much understeer in the tight corners, so we have something to work on. If we manage to solve this I think we will be looking good."
Gabriele TARQUINI: "I am quite satisfied. We benefitted from our past experience and went out straightaway with the best set up for this track. The car was good from the very beginning so I am optimistic. I was really surprised by how much grip there was on the track. Last year we were struggling to find grip but now it’s totally different."

F2 agrees partnership with McLaren Autosport BRDC Award

Formula Two to play central role in Award’s final assessment process

F2 Personnel and drivers

The FIA Formula Two Championship will play a pivotal part in the 22nd McLaren Autosport BRDC Award after today (04/03) announcing a partnership to supply six Williams JPH1B cars for the final driver assessment process.

The prestigious award – previously won by David Coulthard and reigning FIA Formula One World Champion Jenson Button – is set to undergo one of the biggest enhancements in its history thanks to the link-up with Formula Two. The move to supply six F2 cars will transform the driver assessment process as there will be enough machines to enable all of the finalists to be on the track at the same time – something that had proved impossible in the past.

Formula Two will now provide the cars and the engineering support for the award, whilst there are also plans in place for a frontrunner from the 2010 championship to provide a benchmark for the six MABA finalists. There is the potential to change the format to include qualifying runs, race simulations, pitstops and technical feedback appraisals.

The McLaren Autosport BRDC Award is the world’s premier young driver award, aimed at rewarding the best young racing drivers from the UK, where a final shortlist of six drivers are evaluated both in and out of a number of racing cars. An experienced panel of judges decide on a winner who is then awarded a £50,000 cash prize and a test in a McLaren Formula One car.

Formula 3 had previously been used for the single seater element, but a lack of cars often meant that drivers were assessed at different times and in differing weather conditions, whilst a number of drivers also gained an advantage by testing an F3 car prior to the shootout.

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: “The single seater is the most important part of the evaluation, but it’s frustrating to have to run drivers in batches because of the resources that have previously been available.

“Even if we tested in Spain the track conditions would vary with temperature. Comparing drivers in different weather conditions and at different times complicates the whole process. Using six F2 cars will allow the judges to compare drivers in the same cars at the same time.

“This gives us a real opportunity to get creative with the appraisal. We can do more running and give the judges a huge amount more data with which to evaluate the drivers.”

Long-serving MABA judge and veteran commentator Ian Titchmarsh said: “Just like F2 itself as a racing category, the introduction of F2 cars into the Award test days will provide a much more level playing field, while at the same time offering the opportunity to test the finalists in ways which have simply not been possible previously.”

Gutes Zeichen für den ATS Formel-3-Cup

Timo Rumpfkeil

Benjamin Lariche secures place on the F2 grid

Benjamin Lariche

Drivers from seven countries and three continents confirmed so far

The 2010 FIA Formula Two Championship grid continues to take shape with Frenchman Benjamin Lariche today (3/3) confirmed as the latest driver to have secured his place in the line-up – joining a list of drivers from seven countries and three continents to have signed up so far.

Lariche’s single seater career dates back to 2006 when he contested the Formula Renault Campus France series, scoring podiums in his maiden season. The 22-year-old then stepped up to French Formula Renault in 2007. The following season Lariche moved into Formula Renault 2.0 WEC, where he scored his first single seater victory with a win at Valencia – beating a host of talented rivals including Red Bull’s F1 reserve driver Daniel Ricciardo. The same year Lariche also contested one race in the Formula Junior FR 2.0 Portugal series, which he also won. Lariche remained in the Formula Renault 2.0 WEC series for 2009 and also contested six races in Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.

Lariche joined all four days of F2 winter testing at the end of 2009. He ran well throughout, posting the fifth fastest time on the opening day in Valencia.

Benjamin Lariche said: “I am very excited and impatient to begin a new season in Formula Two – I haven’t raced since December and it has been too long! Last year in Formula Renault 2.0 I was the only driver in my team, so I didn’t have any data to compare with. This year in Formula Two it will be good to have the data and videos of the fastest driver and I hope to improve my driving with these interesting tools. It is also going to be really exciting driving this powerful and competitive car, particularly with the new upgrades. I feel confident after the F2 winter tests – my main target is to just keep improving as a driver and I hope to finish in the points as often as possible, and why not score some podiums!”

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: “France has a history of producing great drivers, and last year we had race-winner Julien Jousse in Formula Two. Benjamin has already competed against another talented Frenchman, Ferrari’s Jules Bianchi, in 2007 and I have no doubt he will be eager to emulate Jousse’s performances from last year and be the leading French F2 driver in 2010. He had a great approach and got on well with everyone in the team during the winter F2 tests, and I look forward to seeing him build upon on that testing experience to become a frontrunner in the 2010 Formula Two season.”

8. OCC Classic Rallye Triest-Wien

Liebe Rallye-Gemeinde,

Teixeira will be one of the most experienced drivers in the F2 field this year, having spent two seasons in the British F3 International class in 2007 and 2008, whilst also contesting the Zandvoort Masters and RTL GP Masters of F3. In 2008 he made the switch to the GP2 Asia Series with Trident Racing, before staying with the team for an assault on the main GP2 series in 2009.

Ricardo has already experienced the Williams JPH1 F2 car, having joined all four days of official winter testing last December. He showed promising pace from the outset, finishing inside the top eight in Valencia.

Ricardo Teixeira said: “After having participated in British F3 and GP2, I am now really looking forward to competing in the F2 championship. I hope to make best use of my experience and to benefit from the principle of equality that pervades F2 in showing my potential this year. This may be my first year in F2 but I expect to improve quickly in the first races.”

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: "I’m delighted to welcome Ricardo Teixeira, our first African driver, to Formula Two. The equality of F2 provides the perfect environment for Ricardo to prove his talent and I’m sure he’ll make the most of the opportunity and be pushing for points this season. Coming from GP2, Ricardo will really appreciate the recent performance upgrades Williams and MSV have made to the JPH1B F2 car.”

Russian Sergey Afanasiev confirmed in Formula Two line-up

Sergey Afanasiev

International Formula Master runner-up eyes F2 title attack in 2010

Sergey Afanasiev has today (01/03) become the second Russian driver to join the 2010 FIA Formula Two Championship.

Afanasiev, part of the Lukoil Driver Support Programme, joins the series after an impressive 2009 campaign which saw him finish as runner-up in the International Formula Master series. He scored one race victory and nine podiums from the 16 races, including top three finishes at Brno, Brands Hatch and Oschersleben – all circuits F2 will visit in 2010. The 21-year-old also competed in IFM in 2008, recording one victory, two podiums and one pole.

Despite his young age the Russian’s single seater career dates back to 2004 when he won the Formula Russia championship in his maiden season. He went on to become a multiple race winner in Formula Renault 2.0 and also competed in the F3 EuroSeries and Formula Renault 3.5.

Afanasiev follows Ivan Samarin as the second Russian to join F2 for 2010, and Sergey will be hoping to repeat the 2009 success of fellow countryman Mikhail Aleshin, who finished third in last year’s FIA Formula Two Championship.

He said: "It is very difficult to find the right category each year and success in other series depends not only on a driver but also the right car, the right people and engineers. I’m pleased that the F2 car has been advanced for 2010 and I’m sure it will be really fast. I’m excited about the overboost button, which I cannot wait to try during a race weekend. My target is to first understand a new car and also to learn some fantastic circuits that I have never been to before. There will be many good drivers in the championship but I expect to be fighting for podiums.”

Jonathan Palmer, Formula Two Series Director, said: “I’m very pleased Sergey has joined F2 and it will be the perfect championship for him to prove his talent.  There is clearly a great deal of Russian talent emerging and Sergey’s championship second place in Formula Master last year proves he is amongst the best, which is why he has been selected by Lukoil, who were also involved in F2 last season, for their young driver support programme.  Sergey has had the benefit of seeing how F2 works last year when Formula Master supported the WTCC/F2 events, so it is a natural graduation and I expect him to be challenging for podiums.”
