BMW’S CLEAN SWEEP IN JAPAN QUALIFYING

BMW Team RBM locked out the front row of the grid for tomorrow’s Race 1 at Okayama. Andy Priaulx claimed his first pole position since Macau 2006 with the quickest lap of the weekend so far, a 1:36.972 that is also a new track record for S2000 cars. His team-mate Augusto Farfus (1:37.408) will start alongside him ahead of Chevrolet’s Rob Huff (1:37.441).
Norbert Michelisz (1:37.577) emerged as the best rookie in fifth position overall, while Franz Engstler (1:38.605) will start in tenth, best of the independents after also making it through into Q2.
Q1 – Michelisz initially posted the fastest time, but the BMWs quickly took the advantage with Farfus and Priaulx jumping on top of the timesheets. With seven minutes to go, French newcomer Michaël Rossi improved to seventh and secured his place in Q2.
The BMW 320si cars looked strong with Colin Turkington recording a great lap in the final minutes to go fastest of anyone at that point in all three sectors and jump ahead of the Farfus-Priaulx pair with a time of 1:37.264.
With no improvements as the flag came out, the top ten going forward into Q2 remained Turkington, Farfus, Priaulx, Huff, Michelisz, Tarquini, Muller, Engstler, Menu and Rossi who managed to reach Q2 on his first appearance in the championship.

Q2 – With the help of a slipstream from his teammate, Andy Priaulx secured his first pole position of the season on his only flying lap in Q2. A best time of 1:36.972 gave him pole from Farfus by 0.436s and the team decided not to risk an extra flying lap on the tyres to hopefully give the pair an advantage in the race tomorrow.
Huff posted the third quickest time (1:37.441) from Turkington (1:37.495), and Michelisz (1:37.577), who was the quickest SEAT driver of the day as well as being the top rookie in fifth.
Reigning champion Gabriele Tarquini’s (1:37.727) best time was good enough for sixth ahead of Chevrolet’s Menu (1:37.844) and Muller (1:37.913). Rossi (1:38.387) was the only driver to improve on his second flying lap to move up to ninth ahead of Engstler.

SEQUENTIAL GEARBOX FOR PRIAULX AND FARFUS
Four BMW cars – Andy Priaulx’s, Augusto Farfus‘, Franz Engstler’s and Andrei Romanov’s – are equipped with an Xtrac 6-speed sequential gearbox. Although Romanov already used it in the previous three events, this is the first time ever since the Super 2000 regulations were adopted back in 2002 that BMW factory cars run with a sequential gearbox instead of the usual 5-speed H-pattern.
This change, along with the compensation weight system, enabled them to benefit from a significant weight reduction: 1168 kg compared to the 1198 kilos fixed by the sporting regulations and the application of the compensation weight.
Four other BMW cars – Kristian Poulsen’s, Colin Turkington’s, Yoshihiro Ito’s and Henry Ho’s – were accepted as "old" models and given a weight of 1123 kilos.

CHEVROLET INTEND TO APPEAL
The Chevrolet team announced their intention to appeal against the decisions 1 and 2 taken by the Panel of the Stewards that authorize the two BMW Team RBM cars to run with the 6-speed sequential gearbox.

FXPRO CYPRUS RALLY PREVIEW

THE CHALLENGE
After 11 months of gruelling competition over several thousand kilometres of competitive stages, the curtain comes down on another enthralling Intercontinental Rally Challenge season in Cyprus next week (4-6 November).
The FxPro Cyprus Rally, the 12th and final event of the year, might be new to the IRC schedule for 2010 but it has become one of the most demanding events on the international rallying calendar since it first took place in 1970.
Featuring mixed-surface stages, the country’s narrow and undulating roads and passes will test driver and car to the limit. And Eurosport, Europe’s largest television sports channel and the IRC’s international media partner, will be showing four stages of the event live.
As well as counting for IRC points, the event forms the penultimate round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship and several competitors from the regional series, including multiple champion Nasser Al-Attiyah, will be in action and will doubtless pose a threat to the IRC regulars.
Forty-two competitors will tackle the rally and the majority will remain on the island for the inaugural Love Cyprus Golden Stage Rally, which takes place on Sunday 7 November. The event, a joint initiative between the Cyprus Automobile Association and the IRC’s promoter, Eurosport Events, will be contested over a single 25-kilometre mixed-surface stage run twice. The action will be televised live on Eurosport and Cypriot channel Lumiere TV and a combined prize fund of 150,000 Euros has been pledged by the organisers.
The Cyprus Rally is characterised by its breathtaking and dramatic scenery. The move to a mixed-surface format in 2009 has resulted in the inclusion of some faster and flowing roads as opposed to the low-speed tracks that were synonymous with the event in the past. However, it is still widely known for providing a stern test for competitors and their cars.
Despite the rally’s early November date, ambient temperatures are set to peak at 27 degrees centigrade and won’t dip any lower than 20 degrees centigrade. This will put the onus on driver fitness and increase the strain on the cars as they pass over the rock-strewn roads.
Action gets underway with an all-asphalt superspecial stage in the Limassol’s port, the island’s largest, on the night of Thursday 4 November. The Lemesos Super Special Stage covers a total distance of 2.45 kilometres and drivers will compete against each other in pairs.
Friday is made up of three mixed-surface stages based to the east of Limassol, plus a return to the Lemesos Super Special Stage that evening. Saturday’s action takes place over six stages with the first car due to reach the finish close to the event’s permanent service park in Limassol in the south of the island at 18:03hrs local time.
The Cyprus Rally marks the finale of the IRC 2WD Cup for crews in two-wheel drive machinery. Both the drivers‘ and manufacturers‘ titles will be decided in Cyprus.
Another significant accolade up for grabs in Cyprus is the Colin McRae IRC Flat Out Trophy. The award is handed to the most spectacular driver who best embodies the spirit of the Scottish hero and rallying legend on rounds of the IRC. Its recipient is chosen by a panel consisting of IRC’s Motorsport Development Manager Jean-Pierre Nicolas, Gilbert Roy, the Director of Editorial and Programme Development at Eurosport Events, and Jim McRae, Colin’s father. A special award will also be given to the most spectacular driver of the year.

THE COMPETITORS

Andreas Mikkelsen will start the FxPro Cyprus Rally on the back of his strong run to second place on Rally of Scotland earlier this month and will be a firm contender for his maiden Intercontinental Rally Challenge victory in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000. The 21-year-old from Norway has impressed mightily throughout the season and is determined to finish 2010 with a podium.
Nasser Al-Attiyah has enjoyed plenty of success in Cyprus in the past by winning the country’s Troodos Rally on seven occasions. Armed with a Fiesta S2000, the Qatari made his IRC debut on Rally Argentina in March and will be aiming to make his most of his experience of the island’s gruelling terrain alongside Italian co-driver Giovanni Bernacchini.
Martin Prokop will also rely on Fiesta technology when he makes his first IRC start of the season. The Czech has sampled the Cypriot stages in the past, winning the Junior world championship event in the country in 2009. Jaromir Tarabus will partner his countryman in the Czech Ford National Team at the wheel of a similar Fiesta.
Franz Wittmann returns to IRC action after missing the last two events in Italy and Scotland. The Austrian, 27, visited the Cyprus Rally in 2006 when it counted towards the world championship and has fond memories of the island and its punishing stages. Despite showing plenty of pace this season in his Interwetten Racing Peugeot 207, Wittmann has been frequently out of luck and is still chasing his first points of the campaign.
Joining Wittmann in the ROMO Motorsporttechnik outfit will be Frenchman Bryan Bouffier, who has concluded a one-off deal to drive for the German squad in a second 207. Bouffier came close to winning Barum Czech Rally Zlin in August and is relishing the mixed-surface stage format in Cyprus. Buoyed by her first IRC points in Scotland, Burcu Cetinkaya will be aiming to add to her tally in her Peugeot Sport Turkey 207.
Daniel Oliveira scored his first IRC points back in his native Brazil in early March. He has recruited Bruno Magalhaes‘ co-driver Carlos Magalhaes to partner him in Cyprus aboard his Stohl Racing 207. Team boss Manfred Stohl finished second on the Cyprus Rally in 2006 and will be anxious to offload his experience onto his young charge.
Cypriot Nicos Thomas holds the record as the youngest winner of the Cyprus Rally, a feat he achieved as a 20-year-old in 2007. Now 23, Thomas has got his hands on a Peugeot 207 and will be an unknown quantity as he adapts to the Super 2000-specification machine. Thomas is one of several leading local drivers in action. Others include current Cypriot champion Constantinos Tingirides and Charalambos Timotheou. Both will drive Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancers.
With the IRC title-winning Skoda Motorsport team not competing in Cyprus, Lebanese driver Roger Feghali will be responsible for upholding the Czech manufacturer’s honour in his Fabia S2000. Feghali is better known as an asphalt specialist but has some experience driving on gravel.
Misfer Almari is one of several Subaru Impreza drivers in action in Cyprus. Hailing from Qatar, Almari leads the Middle East Rally Championship and will be a contender for the Subaru Individual Award, which is handed out to the leading Subaru finisher by the Japanese manufacturer on rounds of the IRC.
With Kevin Abbring and Rafael Tulio not competing in Cyprus, Harry Hunt knows that a points‘ finish will be enough to secure the IRC 2WD Cup title. The trio are tied on 20 points each although Hunt might be hard-pushed to land a maximum score against Hungarian Honda Civic drivers Janos Puskadi and Laszlo Vizin.
Cyprus is the final event of the 2010 IRC season and will determine third place in the overall IRC manufacturers‘ ranking. The manufacturers‘ title in the IRC 2WD Cup is also still up for grabs and the outcome will be determined in Cyprus.
All IRC awards will be presented at the end-of-season ceremony in Limassol on the evening of Sunday 7 November. The event is being jointly organised by Eurosport Events and the Cyprus Automobile Association. IRC champions Juho Hanninen and Mikko Markkula, runners-up Jan Kopecky and Petr Stary, and third-placed crew Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle are among those set to attend.

THE EXPECTATIONS

Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar), M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000: "It’s a very tough rally and the mixed-surface stages will increase the challenge but my experience means I know what to expect. My target is to win even though the level of the IRC drivers will be very high."
Bryan Bouffier (France), Peugeot 207 S2000: "This will be the highest level rally I have done on gravel but I hope to find a good pace quickly. I like driving on gravel and my Peugeot is very competitive on this type of surface. I don’t know the rally but I know it will be difficult."
Franz Witttmann (Austria), Peugeot 207 S2000: "After a bad season I really need a strong result so this is a very important rally for me. If I can show the pace I have on other gravel events then I will be happy but I also need to stay out of trouble to ensure I finish."

ROB HUFF SETS PACE IN JAPAN TESTING

Chevrolet’s Rob Huff ended on top of the timesheets as the penultimate event of the WTCC 2010 season got underway this afternoon in Japan. Huff emerged as the fastest with 10-minutes to go but improved again to set a final time of 1:38.059 around the 3.7-kilometre Okayama International Circuit.
His teammate and current championship leader, Yvan Muller (1:38.698) was second quickest. Following a win apiece last year, the BMWs looked strong yet again with Andy Priaulx (1:38.779) ending the 30-minute test session third using a 6-speed sequential gearbox for the first time. His team-mate, Augusto Farfus (1:3.028) was fifth.
Chevrolet’s Alain Menu (1:38.794) was fourth with SR-Sport team-mates Tiago Monteiro (1:39.381) and Tom Coronel (1:39.453) sixth and seventh, despite the Dutchman locking up and running through the gravel at Turn 1 early in the session.
Darryl O’Young (1:39.503) was impressive in his Chevrolet Lacetti finishing the best independent in eighth position overall. Robert Dahlgren also had a good showing recording a 1:39.510 in his Volvo C30 to be placed ninth.
Michel Nykjær (1:39.628) rounded out the top ten to end the day as best rookie.
With a season record of 27 cars out on track, Yukinori Taniguchi (1:39.904) was quickest of the four Japanese drivers, clocking the in 15th best lap.
Reigning champion Gabriele Tarquini (1:40.674) finished 17th, losing running time after suffering a front left puncture. After he took a shortcut to the garages across the paddock the team got him back out for the final minutes.

JTCC WAS LAUNCHED TUESDAY IN TOKYO
The new Japanese Touring Car Championship that will be organised from 2012 was launched last Tuesday by Concorde Management and Askatsu-DK during a crowded press conference at Tokyo’s UDX Theatre.
"I am obviously extremely pleased that Concorde and ADK have decided to restore the Japanese Touring Car Championship and follow the way traced by the FIA in terms of technical regulations. Especially now, at the eve of a radical renovation that sees the launch of a new set of rules based on the 1.6 litre turbocharged engine," commented Lotti on the fact that the new series will follow the FIA Super 2000 technical regulations.
The JTCC promoter is already in negotiations with its counterpart of the China Touring Car Championship to organise a few joint events.

F2 announces Winter Testing plans

Championship travels to Portugal and Spain in December for four days of testing

Following a highly successful and intensely competitive second season of competition in 2010, the FIA Formula Two Championship is running a four-day winter test programme in Portugal and Spain this December.

The tests are open to any driver subject to F2 approval, and will run at Portimão – recently reinstalled as an F1 test venue – and Barcelona, Spain’s most prestigious racing circuit.

Drivers will have the chance to test in the sophisticated Williams-designed JPH1B F2 car, which incorporates a cockpit-adjustable front wing and anti-roll bar, paddle shift gearbox and overboost facility which takes power up to 480bhp in six second bursts.

2010 FIA Formula Two Championship – Winter Testing

F2_Winter_Testing_Banner

New drivers will receive a detailed briefing on the F2 cars and their operating systems, with full support being provided from expert F2 engineers. Every driver will also be able to compare their data to the data from the overall fastest lap in each and every session, providing total transparency and creating an ideal learning environment.

Drivers will also benefit from full onboard videos throughout the testing programme, with the ability to overlay their video with that of the fastest driver from each and every session.

Two new sets of tyres will be made available per day, and drivers will also have the ability to bring family, guests or sponsors with full F2 hospitality being provided throughout.

Formula Two held a similar test programme in the winter of 2009, which met with great acclaim from all who participated. In total 25 drivers got to grips with the Williams JPH1 F2 car, with 12 progressing onto the 2010 F2 grid.

Winter Testing in the FIA Formula Two Championship is now available, and interested parties should contact the Championship Co-ordinator, James Gornall at james.gornall@formulatwo.com or on 0044 1234 332439.

Mikkelsen plans full attack on Golden Stage Rally

Andreas Mikkelsen has vowed to go on "maximum attack" when he contests the inaugural Love Cyprus Golden Stage Rally on Sunday 7 November.
The event, which takes place the day following the FxPro Cyprus Rally, the 12th and final round of the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge from 4-6 November, features a mixed-surface, 25-kilometre stage run twice. In addition to live television coverage on Eurosport and Cypriot channel Lumiere TV, the contest will carry a combined prize fund of 150,000 Euros.
"It’s great to have a stage like that," said Mikkelsen, who will drive an M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000. "All the drivers will go maximum attack on this stage so to be a spectator there will be incredible."
Mikkelsen, a 21-year-old from Norway, will arrive in Cyprus on the back of his heroic run to second overall on RACMSA Rally of Scotland earlier this month, his best result in the IRC to date.
He said: "The stages in Cyprus are difficult and very twisty but I think we can get a strong result. Certainly it’s our aim to go very good there and hopefully finish the season with a podium. We’ve made lots of improvements over the year and I am sure we can get a strong result."

Wittmann excited by Limassol superspecial

Franz Wittmann says the Lemesos Super Special Stage, which will be used twice on the FxPro Cyprus Rally, the final round of the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge, will provide plenty of drama and must be treated with the utmost respect by the competitors.
Wittmann, who turned 27 yesterday (Wednesday), will take part on the event in his Interwetten Racing Peugeot 207 Super 2000 alongside regular co-driver Klaus Wicha.
Using an all-asphalt, 2.45-kilometre course in Limassol’s port area, the fan-friendly stage will be run immediately following the ceremonial start on the night of Thursday 4 November and on the evening of Friday 5 November. The stage incorporates a cross-over point and drivers will tackle the test in pairs.
"These kinds of stages are great for the fans because they can get really close to the action and you always have plenty of drama and get really sideways," said the Austrian ace. "Although it’s a short stage in comparison to some of the gravel stages on the rally, you can’t win the rally on it but it’s very easy to lose the rally and all the drivers need to be aware of that."
Wittmann will be one of several IRC regulars set to tackle the all-new Lemesos Super Special Stage, which is being organised by IS Focus in cooperation with Limassol Municipality and the Port Authority. Other drivers include Brazil’s Daniel Oliveira and Burcu Cetinkaya, from Turkey.

Thomas heads all-Cypriot rally team

An all-Cypriot team will contest the finale to the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge season, next week’s FxPro Cyprus Rally.
Featuring drivers Nicos Thomas, Constantinos Tingirides, the current Cypriot rally champion, Charalambos Timotheou and Panicos Polycarpou, the squad will be entered under the Petrolina banner.
Thomas, ranked as one of Cyprus‘ leading rally drivers, is the best-placed of the quartet to land a strong result on the mixed-surface event after he achieved his long-held aim of securing the use of a Super 2000 car for his home rally.
The Peugeot 207 he will pilot will be run by the Italian Munaretto squad. The other three drivers will compete in Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancers.
Twenty-three-year-old Thomas is better known for his exploits in conventional turbocharged Group N machinery and his transition to a normally-aspirated S2000 car will be keenly anticipated, not least by the thousands of local fans lining the route.
In excess of 40 crews will contest the Cyprus Rally, which joins the IRC schedule for the first time this season and will receive four hours of live coverage on Eurosport and Cypriot channel Lumiere TV.

IRC titles up for grabs in Cyprus

While the outcome of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge drivers‘ and manufacturers‘ titles has been settled in favour of Juho Hanninen and Skoda respectively, the battle for the IRC 2WD Cup will go down to the wire on the FxPro Cyprus Rally, which takes place on the Mediterranean island from 4-6 November.
Double event winners Kevin Abbring and Rafael Tulio jointly top the IRC 2WD Cup drivers‘ standings with Harry Hunt on 20 points apiece. However, with only Hunt set to contest the mixed-surface event in his I Cars Motorsport M-Sport Ford Fiesta R2, the title will be Hunt’s providing he can score a points‘ finish to move above his rivals.
If Hunt does prevail and follows in the footsteps of 2009 class champion Denis Millet, he will have to wait until he receives his trophy. It is due to be presented at the end-of-season awards, which will take place at Le Meridien Limassol Spa and Resort on the evening of Sunday 7 November. However, Hunt is flying back to his native United Kingdom following the finish to prepare for another rally taking place the following weekend.
Hungarian Honda Civic drivers Janos Puskadi and Laszlo Vizin will provide Hunt with his main opposition in Cyprus but are not in contention for the IRC 2WD Cup title.

Biel Pons, Subcampeón de la Kawasaki Team Green Cup 2010

!cid_DC6FF944-002F-49B3-B94E-45BA0FD5B257@Belkin

DTM an zwei Veranstaltungstagen

A continuación Lucian Toth (BMW-M3) era quinto pudiendo contener a Xema Albal (Clio Sport), y Javi Matias (Citroen Visa). Entre los pequeños, Salva Seguí imponía su Saxo ante Toni Tallón, Bruno Graffeuil, Vicente Planas y Juan Bergas.

DSC_7493
