THE FIA AMENDS IMOLA WEIGHT LIST

Following a request from the SEAT Sport team, the FIA Stewards have published a decision that states: "Considering the particular weather conditions in which the qualifying took part (at Oschersleben) and the impossibility of calculating a realistic time, the Stewards decide to allocate the time set during Q1 as the notional time in application of Art. 79 A)1) of the 2009 FIA WTCC Sporting Regulations."
As a consequence of this decision, the BMW 320si car is promoted to the fastest car of the German weekend, 0.1 seconds faster than the SEAT León TDI.
However, the only effect on the weight list for the Imola event is that the Chevrolet Cruze cars are allocated 30 kilos of compensation weight instead of 20.

Compensation weights Imola (amended)
+ 40 kg BMW 320si, SEAT León TDI
+ 30 kg Chevrolet Cruze LT
– 20 kg BMW 320si Zanardi, LADA Priora, SEAT León TFSI

CORONEL TO TAKE PART IN ASIAN ROUNDS
Tom Coronel has secured his participation in the two final events of the 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship, at Okayama in Japan and Macau.
Despite SEAT Holland’s decision to stop supporting him after Imola, the Dutchman and the SUNRED Engineering team will be able to compete in the Asian rounds thanks to the support of clothing company McGregor and SEAT Sport.
Coronel is still in contention for the Independents‘ Trophy title and after his two recent victories at Oschersleben he is leading the standings.
"It was quite hard for me when I was told that we wouldn’t be racing in Japan and Macau. However, Dutch SEAT importer Pon Car gave me all the possibilities to go and look for a solution to make the participation in Asia happen after all. From that moment on, I have tried every possible option and thanks to many people who have provided ideas and support, we have succeeded. Of course, that makes me very happy," said Coronel.
For the final three events of the season – Italy, Japan and Macau – Coronel’s SEAT León will sport a new blue livery.

ZANARDI 14th IN HANDBIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Alessandro Zanardi claimed an outstanding 14th place in the Handbike World Championship last Sunday at Borgogno, Italy. On his maiden appearance as a member of the Italian handbike national team, the BMW Team Italy-Spain driver put in a strong performance, finishing the in-line race only 11.29 seconds behind the winner.
"It has been a great experience although my expectations were for better results. In both, the chrono and in the in-line races I left behind the same number of opponents that finished in front of me but I did not have in my arms strength and resistance to fight with the best ones. I could have obtained better results by managing my resources in a different way, if I only had more experience…," said Zanardi.

ENGSTLER MEETS MUNICH FOOTBALLERS
After his home event at Oschersleben and before heading to Imola, Independent front runner Franz Engstler took some time to visit football club 1860 Munich.
He took his BMW 320si race car to the grounds and met the Bavaria-based team who compete in the Second Bundesliga.
Both are supported by Liqui Moly and are fighting to be winners in their respective championships. While Engstler sits third in the WTCC Independents‘ Trophy, 1860 Munich are currently placed seventh.

INDIES‘ PRIZE MONEY WILL RISE TO 500,000 EUROS
Next year the prize money for the FIA World Touring Car Championship’s Independents‘ Trophy will be raised from the current 384,000 euros to 500,000.
"We are very grateful to Yokohama for continuing to support the privateer drivers‘ efforts to stay in the championship. And thanks to Yokohama we are now able to offer an impressive half-million prize money," WTCC promoter Marcello Lotti declared.
The way this prize money is going to be awarded will be unveiled in the next weeks.
"We are currently in negotiations with other partners to increase the prize money by another 250,00 euros. We hope to confirm this new deal soon," concluded Lotti.

Kazim blazes to maiden F2 pole

Kazim celebrates
Lithuanian sets blistering pace in first qualifying

Kazim Vasiliauskas stormed to his maiden F2 pole in the first qualifying session at Imola today (Friday), eclipsing his rivals by more than three tenths of a second.

The Lithuanian backed up his earlier claim of wanting to fight for victories, as he set the fastest lap of the weekend with a 1:38.468s: "I’m really happy," said Kazim. "I see that every time I am improving, and now this is my first pole, I am just so happy. At the first race in Valencia my father told me if you are in the top ten I will be very happy. Now, at the end of the season, I have a pole! Tomorrow I will try to make progress and take my first win of the year."

Mirko Bortolotti pipped Mikhail Aleshin to second place, but the Italian was upset with his colleague after Aleshin allegedly blocked him on his final run. It is the second time in as many meetings that the Red Bull duo have had a difference of opinion.

"It was a bit frustrating because the pace was there to get pole," commented Bortolotti, "but on my fastest lap Aleshin stopped me, so I don’t know what to say. In the end I am happy because I got second position, but it could have been better for sure. Still, first row is a good result and it gives me confidence for the race."

During the post-qualifying press conference Aleshin simply said he hadn’t seen Bortolotti in his mirrors, but the Russian had a complaint of his own: "I think that many people were pushing under the yellows, and I think it will be a good decision if the FIA investigate this a little," he commented. "In my opinion I was the only one slowing down."

Robert Wickens completed a Red Bull 2-3-4 as the Canadian left it late to see off Philipp Eng. The Austrian was second behind Vasiliauskas with only five minutes to go, but he may have paid the price for aborting his final run. Championship leader Andy Soucek may be content with sixth on the grid as he looks to wrap up the title this weekend, but the Spaniard earlier admitted he did not have the pace to challenge for pole.
Sebastian Hohenthal ended up seventh ahead of a mighty impressive run from Germán Sánchez. The reigning Spanish F3 champion recovered from an early spin to score his best qualifying position of the season.

After setting the pace during the opening practice session, Julien Jousse will be disappointed with ninth, whilst Edoardo Piscopo will have to fight for his first F2 podium from tenth on the grid.

Armaan Ebrahim spun out of the session at Rivazza on his first flying lap – the Indian pilot will start tomorrow’s race from the back of the grid. Jens Höing also crashed out late on, whilst Jolyon Palmer and Jack Clarke recovered from separate off-track excursions. Wickens endured a mixed session after bouncing back from a double-off on the same lap, but Tom Gladdis wasn’t so lucky – the Englishman was left stranded in the middle of the circuit on the exit of Tamburello as the chequered flag waved.

Imola – Qualifying 1 – Provisional Classification:

1. Kazim Vasiliauskas, 1:38.468
2. Mirko Bortolotti, +0.313s
3. Mikhail Aleshin, +0.401s
4. Robert Wickens, +0.433s
5. Philipp Eng, +0.538s
6. Andy Soucek, +0.860s
7. Sebastian Hohenthal, +0.982s
8. Germán Sánchez, +1.200s
9. Julien Jousse, +1.219s
10. Edoardo Piscopo, +1.263s

Christian Vietoris will in Barcelona weiter Boden gutmachen

Streckenlänge: 2,977 Kilometer
Rundenrekord F3ES: 1:07,243 Minuten / Franck Mailleux 2007
Distanz: Sa: 27 Runden / So: 36 Runden

Andy Soucek targets F2 title at Imola

Andy Soucek celebrates in Germany

Spaniard determined to make history at Italian round this weekend

Andy Soucek is just one race victory away from taking the inaugural FIA Formula Two Championship and the Spaniard is hoping to wrap things up in Imola this weekend (18/19/20 September).

As F2 arrives in Italy, Soucek holds a commanding 32 point advantage with just four races and 40 available points remaining in the 2009 season. The four-time race winner may not even need to stand on the top step of the rostrum to take the crown, but Soucek is determined to win the championship in style.

Mikhail Aleshin took his maiden victory last time out in Oschersleben and the Russian racer is now Soucek’s main championship challenger. Aleshin is two points ahead of his Red Bull Junior Team colleague Robert Wickens, who in turn is two points in front of Julien Jousse in fourth place. Mirko Bortolotti and Tobias Hegewald are fifth and sixth respectively as just ten points separate the five drivers battling for second in the standings.

The top seven contenders in the championship have all tasted victory in F2 this season, and Philipp Eng in seventh will be looking to bounce back from a fruitless weekend in Germany.

It will be an emotional round for several Italian Formula Two drivers this weekend, with Bortolotti arguably the most likely to take a victory on home soil. Nicola De Marco will be looking for a good result after returning to points scoring form at Oschersleben, whilst Edoardo Piscopo will be chasing a maiden F2 podium. Pietro Gandolfi is another who is looking forward to racing in his homeland for the first time in 2009.

The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit is steeped in history. Based near the Italian town of Imola, a picturesque little town in the province of Bologna, the track is one of the few major international circuits to run in an anti-clockwise direction.

The Imola circuit was home to the San Marino Formula One Grand Prix until 2006, and has recently undergone a series of revisions under the direction of Hermann Tilke. F2 will partner the WTCC this weekend and both races will be screened live on Eurosport.

Andy Soucek said: "I would love to win the championship in Imola and I would like to do it with a victory. Of course, I have to finish in front of my rivals here to take the title, but it will not feel as good if I am not at least on the podium. I will push as hard as always to try and score more wins in F2. Imola has a lot of history and although I have never raced at this circuit, I am sure it is going to be an incredible experience. My Dad competed there in the past and he has told me a lot about the place. If I can do it this weekend then I can really enjoy the final round in my home country when we race in Barcelona."

Time for glory

To the very end, predictions were made on the teams who would win the season. In LMP1, before a mechanical failure, Henri Pescarolo’s team believed they would make it and Jean-Christophe Boullion’s driving talent nearly brought the team the same remarkable achievement as in 2006. They finish second in the classification, an impressive feat of David against Goliath.

Finally the British Aston Martin Team wins the 2009 title, exactly 50 years after the victory of the manufacturer in the Sports Car World Championship! A well deserved tribute to the history of the British brand.

In LMP2, the Portuguese team Quifel ASM, in spite of a shortened race, wins the title in its category concluding a very successful season for Olivier Pla and Miguel Amaral.

In LMGT1, the Luc Alphand Team, after a difficult season, had two happy experiences during the weekend: the return of their leader Luc Alphand in grand shape and winning the season with their Corvette C6.R n°72.

In LMP2, just the once won’t hurt: the battle raged until the last minute! The Felbermayr Proton Germans win this season by one small point in front of their opponents JMW Motorsport! In other words it was shoulder to shoulder and the smallest point had its importance including the one given during the qualifications to the team in pole position!

Last but not least we congratulate the team combining performance and energy saving: the Speedy Racing team Sebbah was awarded the Michelin Green X Challenge trophy.

If we are already looking towards the next season, we would like to take the time to thank all the teams who have fought for their colours during the season and at the same time for those of Endurance racing.

WTCC SET FOR NEW AUDIENCE RECORD

WTCC SET FOR NEW AUDIENCE RECORD
313 million viewers followed the first seven events

The 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is set to establish a new record in TV ratings, according to the recent intermediary study released by the German Independent Institute IFM *.
The study showed that after 7 out of the 12 race meetings, a global audience of 313 million viewers watched the races of the series‘ fifth season.

These figures, compared to the total audience of 350 millions for the entire 2008 season, are testament to the growing worldwide popularity of the championship, which also resulted in an increase in worldwide press, web and TV coverage and event attendance.
The WTCC is now covered by 75 TV networks over more than 160 countries and the contribution of Eurosport, the n°1 pan-European TV channel & official media partner of the series, represents 10% of this intermediary cumulative audience, showing that the TV coverage of WTCC is growing all over the world.

The high-quality and innovative Live TV production has been further enhanced this year, as the WTCC has become the first FIA World Championship produced in native High Definition.

These mid-season figures also show that the WTCC has delivered so far great visibility to the car manufacturers, with an advertising equivalent value already higher than for the full 2008 season.
All WTCC Series Partners also benefit from the outstanding audience growth with as much media value as over last year’s 12 events.
* IFM is an independent German company, appointed by Eurosport Events to track WTCC international feed on a global basis and deliver media ROI studies to WTCC stakeholders.

FBM – Velocidad Llucmajor 13. Sep. 09

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
