MONTEIRO GRABS POLE FOR HOME EVENT

Tiago Monteiro claimed his first WTCC pole position since 2007 for his home event at the Autódromo Internacional de Algarve, today. The Portuguese driver recorded a quickest time of 1:55.372 despite an earlier collision with Andy Priaulx’s BMW and will start alongside Chevrolet’s Yvan Muller (1:55.425) on the front row for tomorrow’s Race 1 ahead of BMW’s Augusto Farfus (1:55.675).
Colin Turkington (1:56.698) ended the session tenth and top of the independents with Norbert Michelisz (1:55.991) in sixth as the best rookie.

Q1 – The drama started early on with local racer Monteiro colliding with Priaulx at T12 resulting in them both having to return to the pits before recording a flying lap. Priaulx was straight back out while the SR-Sport team did some fast work to repair the damage to rear right of Monteiro’s SEAT León TDI, getting him out with half the 20-minute session still remaining.
Gabriele Tarquini was provisionally quickest with a time of 1:56.097 as the final seconds saw a jostle for position. Priaulx improved to fourth to secure his place in Q2 as Muller, on the cusp of being knocked out, also improved to second in his Chevrolet Cruze. Michel Nykjær briefly moved into the top ten before being quickly demoted by Alain Menu on his final run.
Monteiro’s last lap moved him to the top of the timesheets on home soil ahead of the final shootout.
The top ten going through to Q2 were Monteiro, Tarquini, Muller, Huff, Farfus, Priaulx, Menu, Gené, Michelisz and Turkington.
The result confirmed reigning British Touring Car champion Colin Turkington as the best independent on his WTCC debut.

Q2 – In the final 10-minute session all the drivers left it late with only four minutes remaining as they recorded their first lap times.
Monteiro was flying, setting a fastest time of 1:55.372, which was not bettered in the final moments. Chevrolet’s Muller was just 0.053 seconds adrift in second place.
Rob Huff (1:55.934) was the only driver to make any real improvement on his time to jump up to fifth just behind reigning champion Tarquini (1:55.709) in fourth. As the final seconds ticked down the order was confirmed: Monteiro first, from Muller, Farfus, Tarquini, Huff, Michelisz, Gené, Priaulx, Menu and Turkington.

Signature-Doppelsieg am Norisring: Mortara vor Wittmann

Lufttemperatur: 30,9 °C
Streckentemperatur: 46,3 °C

DTM-Premiere: Ralf Schumacher holt erstmals Pole-Position

Palmer triumphs in Algarve opener

Briton takes fourth victory of season, as Bailly and Clarke complete the podium trio

The top three celebrate

Jolyon Palmer took his fourth victory of the season with an assured performance in the opening race in the Algarve, the Briton leading from the start and negotiating a safety car period to eventually clinch victory by just over 2.5 seconds.

Second place went to Zolder race-winner Benjamin Bailly who, like Palmer, maintained his grid position throughout the race.

Behind Bailly, Britain’s Jack Clarke secured his maiden F2 podium in third position, although the 22-year-old was made to work hard for the place after coming under pressure from Kazim Vasiliauskas at the restart of the race.

While the race wasn’t dominated by overtaking, it was notable for a controversial incident between Philipp Eng and Dean Stoneman which saw the pair collide at the turn five hairpin, Stoneman dropping from sixth to 12th as a result.

The championship contenders were both passed by Nicola De Marco on the run to the turn, as Eng and Stoneman fought for position on the outside. Eng made contact with Stoneman as they both turned in and seemed to push his British rival around the hairpin. Eng was able to continue in sixth while Stoneman struggled down the order for the remainder of the race.

The race behind the lead trio was eventually won by Vasiliauskas after the Lithuanian got the jump on De Marco on the opening lap. Despite being heavily pressured by the Italian, Vasiliauskas nearly made a move into third on lap 12. The Safety Car had been deployed for a single lap following a lurid spin by Plamen Kralev, giving Vasiliauskas the chance to attack Clarke ahead.

Vasiliauskas used one of his overboost options and got a great run on Clarke across the start/finish line, but the Briton defended admirably and was able to hold off Vasiliauskas on the run down to turn one. After his failed attempt, Vasiliauskas settled for fourth ahead of the recovering De Marco – the Italian having dropped to seventh in the early stages.

Eng took a lonely sixth at the finish but the drama wasn’t over for the Austrian, as Dean Stoneman reportedly made contact with him again during the slow down lap. The duo already have an incident prone history following contact at Monza in May, and it seems their rivalry may have boiled over again here in Portugal.

Ricardo Teixeira held off a charging Armaan Ebrahim to secure seventh, although the Indian racer can be proud of his performance having started 16th on the grid. Benjamin Lariche claimed a lonely ninth, ahead of a relatively quiet Sergey Afanasiev.

Natalia Kowalska narrowly missed out on securing her first points in Formula Two after an eye catching performance from the female racer. She dropped to the rear of the field in the early stages after apparent contact with Mihai Marinescu, but the CYFRA+ backed driver responded brilliantly, passing Plamen Kralev, Parthiva Sureshwaren, Ivan Samarin, Mihai Marinescu and Dean Stoneman following the restart.

Benjamin Bailly doubles up

Belgian tops both free practice sessions in Portimão

Benjamin Bailly doubles up

Zolder race winner Benjamin Bailly continued his run of excellent form by topping both free practice sessions on the opening day of Formula Two’s fifth event of the season at Portimão.

The Belgian dominated the first session to finish more than eight tenths clear of the field, and continued his good run to top session two in the early stages before improving his time even further in the latter stages.

A flurry of late flying laps in the second session saw Jack Clarke come closest to matching Bailly. Like Bailly, Clarke has also been in good form after equalling his best ever result with fourth place in Belgium last time out. The 22-year-old put in a number of consistent laps during the second session – eventually finishing just 0.034s short of Bailly’s benchmark.

Behind them Kazim Vasiliauskas and Jolyon Palmer claimed third and fourth, ahead of Briton Will Bratt. Such was the closeness of the session that the top five drivers were separated by less than two tenths of a second.

Ricardo Teixeira enjoyed another eye catching run as the Angolan driver completed the top six, while Italy’s Nicola De Marco was less than three hundredths of a second behind in seventh.

Ivan Samarin was more than half a second off the ultimate pace, but his performance remained good enough for eighth place, ahead of two-time race winner Dean Stoneman – who also went off track late on.

Kelvin Snoeks rounded out the top ten and the Dutchman had further cause to celebrate after finding out that his fellow countrymen had beaten Brazil in the FIFA World Cup!

Sergey Afanasiev has endured a challenging day and the Russian racer had to recover from going off at turn four in the early stages to eventually finish in 11th. Plamen Kralev was another driver to make a mistake on the technical Portimão circuit – the Bulgarian spinning at the tight turn five hairpin.

His bamboo-engineering teammate Harry Vaulkhard (1:58.548) was 12th overall finishing third fastest Independent and second quickest Rookie.
Scuderia Proteam Motorsport’s Stefano D’Aste only completed five laps before spinning at T7 and having to sit out the remainder of the session.

!cid_F0A746CC-4209-4CF6-95F1-60B28963ED2B@Belkin

JOHNNY ROSELL (SAG-CASTROL HONDA):

Distanz: Sa: 35 Runden / So: 48 Runden
Sieger 2009: Jules Bianchi / Christian Vietoris

Meeke won’t give up on IRC title defence, despite crash

Kris Meeke has refused to concede defeat in his efforts to defend his Intercontinental Rally Challenge title, vowing to hit the ground running when the series resumes on Sata Rallye Acores from 15-17 July.
The Peugeot UK driver is fifth in the drivers‘ standings, 27 points adrift of leader Juho Hanninen, following his crash on last weekend’s Geko Ypres Rally in Belgium, the third time this season that he has failed to finish an IRC qualifier due to an accident.
"It’s getting more difficult [to defend my title] and maybe we’ll have to change our approach a bit because we can’t carry on pushing to the limit in every corner and on every rally," said Meeke, who turns 31 tomorrow (Friday 2 July). "But Acores is another rally and we go there hoping to hit the ground running."
Co-driven by Paul Nagle, Meeke won Sata Rallye Acores on his first appearance on the event last season. The maximum haul of points he scored back then put him to the top of the IRC standings, where he remained for the rest of 2009.

Busy weekend in store for factory Skoda drivers

Skoda Motorsport drivers Juho Hanninen and Jan Kopecky are braced for busy weekends, even though the next round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge is more than two weeks away.
Hanninen, the current IRC series leader, is contesting Rally Bohemia in Czech Republic, while team-mate Kopecky is taking part on Rally di San Marino, round four of the Italian Rally Championship.
Rally Bohemia, which forms part of the Czech Rally Championship, takes on added significance for Skoda. Not only is the rally centred in Mlada Boleslav, where Skoda is based, but the event will also mark the first time the new Fabia Super 2000 Facelift has competed in the Czech Republic following its debut victory in the hands of Freddy Loix on the Geko Ypres Rally last weekend.
Pavel Valousek, the current Czech championship leader, will also be at the wheel of a factory-supported Fabia S2000 Facelift on Rally Bohemia, albeit run under the Skoda Delimax banner.
Loix, meanwhile, is heading to the UK for the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, where he will be demonstrating a Fabia S2000.

Nicolas calls on IRC community to support Colin McRae Vision

Jean-Pierre Nicolas, the Intercontinental Rally Challenge Motorsport Development Manager, has called on the IRC community to help support the work of Colin McRae Vision, which announced an official partnership with the IRC prior to the Geko Ypres Rally in Belgium last week.
Colin McRae Vision was established following the accident which claimed the lives of rally legend Colin McRae, his five-year-old son Johnny, and two family friends in September 2007, to improve health and education for children around the world. The relationship with the IRC will support charities and good causes that help young people living close to the route of IRC events.
Nicolas said: "We invite all the IRC community to join us, to give some new ideas for this project and to help raise some money for the charity to improve health and education of children."
IRC champion Kris Meeke, a former protégé of McRae and an ambassador of Colin McRae Vision, added: "It’s fantastic to be able to use his popularity to give something back to the communities where the rallies go to and all credit to the McRae family and everyone who has come up with this idea. It can only go from strength to strength."

Gonon clinches Subaru Individual Award in Ypres

Florian Gonon’s run to 16th overall on last weekend’s Geko Ypres Rally has earned him the latest Subaru Individual Award.
Swiss champion Gonon, who was driving an Impreza for the Annie Spiers Rallye Team, was making his Ypres debut and his first appearance in this year’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
"The more confident we got the more our times came down," said the 34-year-old. "We struggled on the first day with a few technical issues but I was very pleased with my result and really enjoyed the atmosphere of the event."
The Subaru Individual Award is presented on each of the 12 IRC rounds this year to the highest-placed Subaru finisher and demonstrates the support that Subaru is extending to its customer drivers in the IRC in 2010.
Swiss Olivier Burri (Monte Carlo), Juan San Martin (Curitiba), Gabriel Pozzo (Argentina), Jose Barrios (Canary Islands) and Teemu Arminen (Sardinia) are the other Subaru Individual Award winners so far this season.

It is with regret that we advise of the passing of photographer Lino Vanelli, who was a founding member of the respected PHOTO 4 agency 35 years ago, and formed part of the official IRC photography team since the start of the series back in 2007. Lino was a popular member of the IRC community and covered rallies throughout the world. He was 62.

Bridgestone Motorsport’s European Grand Prix Report

Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel won a high speed and action-packed European Grand Prix on the streets of Valencia after using a super soft-medium Bridgestone Potenza tyre strategy.
Vettel crossed the line ahead of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. There was a safety car period early in the race after a dramatic exit for Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing). Nine cars, including third place finishing Jenson Button, were being investigated after the race for their safety car in lap time.

EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX F1/2010 - VALENCIA 26/06/2010
Hiroshi Yasukawa – Director of Bridgestone Motorsport, says
“Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing for their win today. Well done also to Kamui Kobayashi for using a great tyre strategy for a strong result for the BMW Sauber F1 Team, who have had many changes to the team since last season, so this was great points finish for them. We are happy that Mark Webber had no serious injuries from his dramatic accident. This was a very exciting race set against the great backdrop of Valencia city.”

Hirohide Hamashima – Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development, says
“Today tyre performance was strong from both tyres, and we saw fastest laps being set by both compounds. The track conditions continued to improve throughout the race. Sebastian Vettel drove very strongly and he did not fall foul of the rules, unlike other drivers today. Kamui Kobayashi demonstrated the durability of the medium tyres here with his long first stint, setting competitive lap times, even with over 50 laps completed on them. He was then able to use the super soft tyres when the track was most rubbered in, enabling him to overtake even on a track which is not well known for its overtaking opportunities. Even though our tyres were durable, the rear right on Nico Hulkenberg’s car was unable to withstand the difficult circumstances it faced there from a non tyre related issue.”
Stats of the Day

Bridgestone Potenza Driver Tyre Strategies
Rd.9 – European Grand Prix

In 2010, the tyre regulations stipulate that the two dry tyre specifications must be visibly distinguishable from each other. At the European Grand Prix, the super soft (option) compound Bridgestone Potenza tyres were marked with green bands on the sidewalls. The wet weather tyres were also marked with a green line in a central groove.
