A1-Ring in Erinnerung.

EUROCUP ALCANIZ : A POSITIVE WEEKEND FOR THE EUROFORMULA VOLANT

Paul_Loup_Chatin_EF

The first meeting of the season for the WORLD SERIES by RENAULT 2011 took place this weekend on the ALCANIZ track in Spain and Paul Loup CHATIN took part in the very challenging EUROCUP championship.

In this first leg, the “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” 2011 had a qualified success although it was generally positive. Yet Paul Loup CHATIN started well, finishing in 9th and 7th place in the free practice sessions on Friday.

Things went downhill slightly in the first qualifier. Victim of a yellow flag when he was on his fast lap, Paul Loup lost the advantage of his new tyres and could not do better than 11th in his group. Relegated to 21st position on the grid, the “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” had an excellent start in Race 1 which propelled him to 11th place at the end of the first lap! Unfortunately an electrical fault forced him to abandon, a shame because points were conceivable.

The next day, Paul Loup CHATIN found himself in the top group to compete in the qualifiers and lost four places for just one tenth of a second! He found himself down in 9th position of his group and 17th on the starting grid of Race 2.

Paul Loup had another very good start and rapidly moved up to 10th position before gaining another. The positions were then to stay fixed until the finish despite several attempts to overtake and the “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” would finally cross the finishing line in 9th position.

“This place globally reflects the level of our performance this weekend,” Paul Loup confided, “the TECH 1 team did some really good work starting with the collective tests to improve the set up, but it required specific driving and I had a bit of trouble with it to start with. Overall the weekend was positive because we showed again that our performance is constantly improving. It’s a shame we had an electrical problem during Race 1 but that’s part of motorsport! All the same, I reached my goal and finished in the top 10 and I think we can hope for a bit better at Spa because the TECH 1 team support me all the way

Satisfaction was also found at EUROFORMULA and its Director, Laurent FRADON, explained his point of view to us: “Paul Loup stayed in the running despite the problems encountered. He knew not to give up and fought to move up the ranking for the two races. The EUROCUP is a difficult championship and we have to give him time to get his bearings but I am certain that he will soon be battling for the podium. We are satisfied with Paul Loup’s performance.”

Next meeting on the 29th, 30th April and 1st May on the SPA FRANCORCHAMPS track for the second challenge of the EUROPCUP 2011.

First podium for Nelson Panciatici

Nelson_Panciatici_podium

The World Series by Renault championship took off in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 60,000 on the very technical track of Alcaniz in Spain.

Nelson Panciatici, comfortable with his new team KMP Racing managed by ex-driver Bruno Besson, started the weekend well with the best time in the first session of free practice on Friday. A good omen for the qualifiers for Race 1, during which Nelson made 6th time.

Feeling confident, the driver from Asnieres sur Seine did have a superb race and garnered the first podium of the season for the young team of KMP Racing. Nelson Panciatici overtook his opponents before prowling behind the Canadian, Robert Wickens, right up to the flag, to take second place.

During the second qualifiers, Nelson confirmed his level of performance with a 4th best time. Bruno Besson’s instructions for Race 2 were to reach the podium and start collecting big points.

Right from the start, Nelson Panciatici followed the rhythm of the first three without a hitch until to a fuel pressure problem caused him to abandon in the 8th lap.

The KMP Racing team’s disappointment was fortunately lessened by the appreciable progress of his co-driver, Anton Nebylitskiy who finished 6th.

Nelson Panciatici: “We immediately found the right rhythm. I passed practically all the sessions at the top of the time sheet, we are getting results in the qualifiers and the race. It’s good for morale! Even if our abandon costs us some precious points in the championship, I prefer to stay positive because we have a high-performance car which is important for what comes next. Mechanical breakdowns are part of the race, we have to accept that and there’s nothing we can do about it anyway!”

Bruno Besson, KMP Racing Team Manager, said: “We worked well during free practice and found a good set-up for the qualifiers during which gaps are very small and the least error or

problem can lose a lot of places on the grid. Nelson had a very good first race, no faults and he moved up well. For the second race, as Nelson was holding 4thplace with ease, waiting for his pit stop, the fuel pump broke which led to his abandon. Nelson is nevertheless well placed in the championship and I can’t wait to go to Spa Francorchamps to score big points in both races this time!”

The next meeting in the World Series by Renault is indeed on the mythical track of Spa Francorchamps on the 29th, 30th April and 1st May.

FREE ENTRY (AND MORE) FOR LADY DRIVERS AT THE CROATIA RALLY

They are not many, but in most cases really good. So good that some of them have their name written in block capitals in the history of motor sport: such as Pat Moss and Michelle Mouton in rally, Lella Lombardi, Maria Teresa De Filippis, Divina Galica in F1, Sarah Fisher and Danica Patrick on American tracks, and so on.

Yet for women it is increasingly hard to even take part in motor racing, a world that, like many others, is more male-oriented despite accident figures saying that women are on average better drivers. The organizers of Croatia Rally, to pay a tribute to women drivers, have decided to offer female crews free hotel accommodation and entry to their race – valid for the 2011 FIA European Rally Championship, and for which the entries will close on May 5th – in the hope to set a precedent and to contribute to the revival of female presences and of the dedicated international titles.

For this it is the intention of the organizers of the Croatia Rally not to limit their commitment to the free entry to their event, but they are already studying other initiatives to promote the presence of female drivers in rallyes in general.

GRAN REMONTADA DE DAVID SALOM EN ASSEN

20110417072002

Miki Monras claims commanding maiden win

Bortolotti seals second as penalty for Bratt gives Zanella first podium

Miki Monras claimed a commanding maiden win in the final race at Silverstone, leading from pole position and making the most of a series of incidents behind him to establish an early lead which he never looked like surrendering.
Monras‘ fellow front-row starter Mirko Bortolotti bogged down and lost out to Will Bratt at the start. Bratt however was later handed a drive-through penalty for not respecting track limits, and after failing to come in was then black-flagged. He finished second on circuit but was demoted, handing Christopher Zanella – who started from tenth – a maiden F2 podium in third.
There was drama right from the very start of the 21-lap race two with Briton Alex Brundle failing to get away from the line due to clutch issues, leaving the rest of the field to frantically try to avoid him which all but Parthiva Sureshwaren did. After a slow puncture in race once, Brundle leaves his home circuit after a luckless weekend and no doubt will be gunning to make amends next month when the series travels to Magny-Cours for rounds three and four.
The action continued on the opening lap with Spaniard Ramon Pineiro, who started fifth, spinning as he attacked Mirko Bortolotti at Stowe. He dropped down the order before working his way back through the field to 11th – just outside a second points finish.
19-year-old Monras pushed early on to establish a sizeable cushion while behind him Bratt and Bortolotti battled for second and third places. Swiss driver Zanella, a former Formula Renault 2.0 winner, meanwhile found himself in fourth place – just ahead of Tobias Hegewald in fifth – after an impressive opening few laps, firmly establishing himself as a driver to watch this season.
After starting a career best 14th, Bulgarian Plamen Kralev was battling hard in the midfield with German Julian Theobald. The two made contact on lap six with Julian retiring and Kralev continuing to finish 17th. Just behind Frenchman Benjamin Lariche was pressing Natalia Kowalska hard just outside the top 10 through Club before making his move stick a lap later at Stowe.
Back with the top three, Monras was looking untouchable while Bratt’s chances of securing a double podium this weekend quickly evaporated when he was handed a drive-through penalty for having four wheels off the track. After failing to notice the pit board he was subsequently shown a black flag, ending an otherwise promising weekend for the 23-year-old.
A few laps later Monras took the chequered flag for his maiden F2 win in only his second ever race and by a margin of more than seven seconds. Speaking afterwards the Spaniard said: "First of all, I knew I had to make a good start if I wanted to win the race. Yesterday it was not the case and I struggled a little bit; today it was better, a lot easier. I saw they were fighting a little bit behind on the first lap so I managed to pull a little gap, and after that I pushed and pushed. I knew it was important to get some good laps early on and build a gap until the end and that’s what I did."

Bortolotti, who now leads the drivers‘ standings, crossed the line third but was promoted to second along with Zanella in third, Hegewald in fourth and Mihai Marinescu rounding out the top five.

Behind them Jack Clarke had a relatively quiet drive to sixth ahead of series returnees Armaan Ebrahim and Kelvin Snoeks and newcomer Mikkel Mac. Benjamin Lariche rounded out the top ten, having passed Tom Gladdis on the final lap of the race.

FIA Formula Two Championship, Silverstone – race two results:
1. Miki Monras, 21 laps
2. Mirko Bortolotti, +10.668s
3. Christopher Zanella, +14.907s
4. Tobias Hegewald, +16.873s
5. Mihai Marinescu, +21.753s

BUENAS SENSACIONES EN LA PRIMERA PRUEBA DEL CEV

20110417065121

IRC Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Ingles day two

Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Ingles
Day two, 16 April 2011
Thrilling Canarias victory for IRC champion Hanninen
•First IRC win on asphalt for Skoda’s flying Finn
•Peugeot’s Thierry Neuville shines in third overall

Hanninen160411final

Neuville160411final

Defending Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion Juho Hanninen has moved to the top of the
IRC drivers’ standings with a sensational victory on a thrilling Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Ingles,
the second round of the 12-event series, today (Saturday).
Hanninen, at the wheel of a Skoda Motorsport Fabia, started the second day of the all-asphalt rally
in third overall, albeit a scant 8.6s behind team-mate Jan Kopecky as nine seconds covered the
top four drivers. Despite going fastest on Saturday’s opener, Hanninen remained in third as Thierry
Neuville shot ahead of Kopecky into the lead.
But when Neuville lost vital seconds on the next stage, Hanninen took a second successive fastest
time and powered into first place. With Kopecky 0.1s behind starting the final two stages, the battle
of victory remained tightly poised only for Hanninen to open up a slender advantage that he would
never relinquish by winning the penultimate stage.
Hanninen’s success, which marked his first IRC victory on asphalt, puts him joint top with Freddy
Loix, who finished fourth, on the list of all-time IRC event winners with six victories. It was also
Skoda’s first win of 2011, the Czech manufacturer’s 110th year of motorsport participation and
means Skoda now heads the makes’ classification ahead of Peugeot.
Kopecky made it a Skoda Fabia one-two and suggested he could have repeated his Rally Islas
Canarias win from 2010 had his pacenotes been more precise, particularly on Saturday’s first
stage when he lost the lead of the rally he had held since stage two.
Neuville claimed a hugely impressive third place in his Team Peugeot Belgium-Luxembourg 207
S2000, his first IRC event with new co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul. The 22-year-old from Belgium
reported losing precious ground on stage 10 after partly wearing out his tyres on the previous run
in the high ambient temperatures. As well as causing his car to understeer, Neuville reckoned they
contributed to his spin on a hairpin right.
However, it was Neuville’s best performance in the IRC so far and earned him the prestigious Colin
McRae IRC Flat Out Trophy. Awarded in memory of the late rally legend, the accolade is
presented on all rounds of the IRC to the driver who best embodies the spirit of the former world
champion.
Loix was the highest-placed Canarias rookie in fourth. The BFO Skoda driver was in the fight for
victory until he lost time on Friday’s final test when his Fabia’s side windows misted up and
restricted his vision.
Guy Wilks was one of four drivers to hold the lead of the rally but dropped out of contention with a
slow time through stage two on Friday, which he said was caused by a lack of confidence in the
set-up of his Peugeot UK 207. He started Saturday in seventh after a spin on Friday’s final stage
but fought back up to fifth with a series of impressive times.

Andreas Mikkelsen started the event under orders from his Skoda UK
Motorsport team to reach the finish following his crash on the season-opening
Rallye Monte-Carlo. Although his approach masked his outright speed, he was
nevertheless satisfied to have achieved his pre-rally aim. Finishing sixth
overall he received a further boost when he was able to fend off Rallye Monte-
Carlo winner Bryan Bouffier after a close battle.
Bouffier, who started the event at the top of the IRC drivers’ standings, was never
100 per cent confident with the handling of his Peugeot France 207 and his lack
of knowledge of the island’s demanding and abrasive stages held him back.
However, his haul of six points means he remains firmly in contention for the IRC
drivers’ title.
Bruno Magalhaes also lacked confidence at the wheel of his Peugeot Sport Portugal 207, a legacy
of the high-speed crash he suffered on Rallye Monte-Carlo. However, the IRC event winner
reached the finish in a solid eighth overall.
Giandomencio Basso bagged PROTON’s first points of the season in ninth overall on his debut
with the Malaysian squad. Toni Gardemeister, making his debut for his own TGS Worldwide team,
claimed the final drivers’ point in his Skoda, which he was using in competition for the first time.
PG Andersson dropped out of contention in the second PROTON when he suffered two punctures
in the same stage on Friday. He soldiered to the finish in 16th overall, scoring more manufacturer
points for his employer.
Joan Vinyes won the IRC 2WD Cup following a dominant display over Suzuki team-mate Gorka
Antxustegi. Angel Marrero was third to bag top IRC 2WD Cup manufacturer points for Honda.
Defending IRC 2WD Cup champion Harry Hunt recovered to sixth after being delayed by a fuel
pump fault and a puncture. He finished one place ahead of former IRC drivers’ champion Enrique
Garcia Ojeda in an M-Sport Ford Fiesta R2.
Canary Islander Jose Barrios claimed IRC Production Cup success in his Subaru Impreza after
Gustavo Sosa retired his Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancer.
Huge crowds flocked to the stages to the extent Friday’s final test had to be cancelled due to
concerns over spectator safety and their vociferous support was widely praised by the leading IRC
crews.
DRIVER QUOTES
Juho Hanninen (Finland), Skoda Fabia S2000, first overall: “It has taken a long time but finally,
without any snow or nothing like that, I have won my first Tarmac rally and of course I am happy
with that but also because it was a big fight for the whole rally. You really needed to keep your
concentration on this rally because nobody was making mistakes.”
Jan Kopecky (Czech Republic), Skoda Fabia S2000, second overall: “It was a nice battle until
the end. Juho was flying and was lucky on the second to last stage because he hit a barrier with
the back of his car pushing so hard. My pacenotes were not good on this rally in places and I think
I lost first place because of this but Juho deserved to win.”
Thierry Neuville (Belgium), Peugeot 207 S2000, third overall: “Juho and Jan were in the end
too fast but we tried to follow, enjoyed it and learned a lot. Sometimes I was never sure if I could go
on the same the pace but now I am sure. I only need some more tests with the car and then it will
be perfect. This is really good for the future.”

CEV Jerez – Clasificatorios – “Sensaciones positivas”

Mirko Bortolotti wins Silverstone season opener

Will Bratt second at home circuit as F2 debutant Miki Monras completes podium

1. Mirko Bortolotti celebrates on the podium after sealing a lights-to-flag victory in race one

Italy’s Mirko Bortolotti converted his maiden pole position into a commanding victory in the opening round of the 2011 FIA Formula Two Championship at Silverstone today (Saturday).

Bortolotti made a perfect start, as fellow front row qualifier Spain’s Miki Monras lost a position to Briton Will Bratt after getting bogged down off the line. By the end of the opening lap, Mirko had built a commanding lead of more than a second over the pair, who tussled for position in the early stages of the race.

As Bortolotti put in a series of fastest laps at the front of the field, a locked wheel from Monras allowed Bratt to build a small breathing space in his bid to maintain second position.

The British driver – who lives just a stone’s throw from the circuit in Banbury – cemented his podium place by posting a flying lap in the closing stages of the race, but not before Bortolotti demonstrated his supreme pace by setting the fastest lap of the race on his penultimate tour of the Silverstone Arena circuit.

Mirko Bortolotti said: “It wasn’t easy! First of all I made a good start, and the first lap was actually very good. I managed to get a gap between me and second, and after that I think they were starting to get busy behind me and that was my chance to get away a bit, and that’s what I did. Afterwards I had five seconds advantage I think, so I just tried to look after my tyres.I’m very happy with the result, which is very good for us – the first race weekend and now a pole position and a race win.”

Monras steered his Williams JPH1B Formula Two car to an impressive third position on his championship debut, whilst Romania’s Mihai Marinescu equalled his best ever F2 result in fourth place.

Spain’s Ramon Piñeiro fought his way to fifth position, ahead of Germany’s Tobias Hegewald, who returns to F2 in 2010 following a season in GP3. Hegewald shadowed Piñeiro for much of the contest, but was not quite able to find a way past the composed Spaniard.

F2 rookie Christopher Zanella impressed on his first Formula Two race outing to secure seventh overall, having passed Britons Jack Clarke and Alex Brundle during the race. Clarke finished eighth after struggling with pace in the latter stages of the race, while Brundle’s suffered an unfortunate end to what had been an impressive return performance as a puncture on lap 16 forced him to retire.

Russia’s Max Snegirev took advantage of a wheel-to-wheel battle between Johannes Theobald and Tom Gladdis to carve his way through from 13th in qualifying to ninth at the finish. Snegirev dived down the inside of the duelling pair, who went side by side on several occasions until Gladdis finally shook off his German rival. Theobald then went on to battle with Dutchman Kelvin Snoeks until contact between the pair caused his retirement.

A frantic final few laps saw contact between Korean F2 debutant Sun-Hak Mun and Bulgaria’s Plamen Kralev – causing the latter to retire.
