STRONG ENTRY FOR BELGIUM YPRES RALLY

STRONG ENTRY FOR BELGIUM YPRES RALLY … AND ALL THE OTHER LATEST IRC NEWS

Fans of the Super 2000 formula are in for a bumper weekend of action at the forthcoming Belgium Ypres Rally (June 19-20), with a record number of cars filling the manufacturer entries for this, the fifth round of the 2009 Intercontinental Rally Challenge. So far a total of 17 cars from seven manufacturers are being readied for the off, with a host of different nationalities represented.
Host country Belgium, one of Europe’s great rallying nations, leads the way with a six-strong contingent of talent led by former WRC star Freddy Loix, who topped the IRC points standings until the previous round in the Azores. Switzerland, Italy, France, Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom will also be represented amongst the crews.
For the manufacturers Ypres will showcase entries from runaway leader Peugeot with its 207 S2000, with strong competition coming from the new Skoda Fabia, Abarth Grande Punto and Volkswagen Polo, with the Proton Satria making its debut. Additionally the turbocharged ’showroom‘ specification Mitsubishi Lancer Evos will be out in force, ready to pounce on their non-turbo opposition.

TSJOEN SET FOR BELGIUM YPRES RALLY IN FIFTH KRONOS PEUGEOT

Pieter Tsjoen will return to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge on the Belgium Ypres Rally on June 18-20. A Belgian native, Tsjoen will drive a Peugeot 207 Super 2000 for the Kronos Racing squad, bringing the total number of cars being entered by the Namur-based team to five.
Now 35, Tsjoen hasn’t competed in the IRC since retiring from the Ypres Rally in 2007 When he was at the wheel of an Abarth Grande Punto: A result which culminated in him briefly quitting the sport and handing over his drive to countryman Freddy Loix for the remaining of that season.
He prepared for his IRC comeback by testing in Belgium on June 10, where he familiarised himself with his new car. He also practiced wheel changes alongside co-driver Eddy Chevaillier in the unfortunate event of his Peugeot suffering a puncture during the asphalt rally.
Marc van Dalen, the joint team principal of Kronos Racing, said: "Pieter is a good guy with a lot of experience. The road he tested on wasn’t completely representative of the stages he on the Ypres Rally but that won’t be a problem for him. His car will be the same as all the others and I think he can do a good job."
NEUVILLE TIPPED TO IMPRESS ON BELGIUM YPRES RALLY
Thierry Neuville is capable of producing a surprise result on the Belgium Ypres Rally according to his team boss. Neuville, who will be 21 by the time the event starts in Ypres on June 18, impressed joint Kronos Racing team principal Marc van Dalen during a test in Belgium on June 10.
Kronos is responsible for preparing the Peugeot 207 Super 2000 Neuville will use on the asphalt event, which is his prize for being selected as the BFGoodrich Drivers‘ Team representative on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier.
"I was surprised how well he did in the test because it was his first time in a four-wheel-drive car," said van Dalen. "He seems to be very mature for his age and providing he does what he is told then I really think he can get a good result because he understood very quickly how to drive these cars and what he must do."
Neuville, a German-speaking Belgian, forged a strong reputation competing in the one-make Ford Fiesta and Citroen C2 championships in his homeland. A panel of Belgian journalists, members of Belgium’s motorsport governing body and representatives of tyre company BFGoodrich and Kronos Racing selected Neuville for the drive.
WILKS AIMS TO BRING PROTON TO THE FINISH ON IRC DEBUT
British driver Guy Wilks is determined to get to the finish the Belgium Ypres Rally as he looks to increase his experience at the wheel of the Proton Satria Neo Super 2000, which makes its debut in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge on the asphalt event from June 18-20.
Wilks, a double national champion, will contest seven rounds of the IRC with the factory-backed Proton team, which could expand to run as many as three cars before the end of this season.
Although Wilks has previous experience of the IRC through an appearance in a Honda Civic Type-R on Rally Russia last year, the British designed and built Proton has only competed on three events.
"We’re comfortable with the car but I’m sure we’ll develop it and continue to better the set-up the longer the event goes on for," said Wilks. "We’re going to be going at a good enough pace to make the car work properly but we have to drive within ourselves because we just want to get to the end of Ypres with a good, solid result and put some mileage on the car because that’s one thing we haven’t got."
Wilks, 28, will be co-driven by countryman Phil Pugh.

HANNINEN IS THE FANS‘ FAVOURITE TO WIN IN YPRES

Juho Hanninen could produce a shock victory on the Belgium Ypres Rally on June 18-20, if the results of an online poll predicting the winner of the asphalt event are to be believed.
Event organisers have invited members of the public to nominate who they think will win round five of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge from a list of 11 drivers.
With the event fast approaching, Hanninen, the event’s top seed due to his FIA priority status, also heads the public poll with 27.2 per cent of the votes as of 2200hrs on Thursday June 11.
Hanninen, from Finland, has never won an event on asphalt before but impressed on the Tarmac-based Monte Carlo Rally in January, when he led in his factory Skoda Fabia Super 2000.
Freddy Loix, last year’s Ypres Rally winner, is next up with 26 per cent of the vote, while Francois Duval, another Belgian hero has attracted 20.2 per cent of the vote. Kris Meeke, who heads the IRC drivers‘ standings, is fifth with 5.3 per cent of the vote.
One factor that could work in Hanninen’s favour is his co-driver Mikko Markkula. Although Hanninen hasn’t competed on asphalt for several months, his co-driver Mikko Markkula entered the Tarmac-based British championship Jim Clark Rally in late May.

ALL-STAR FRENCH COMMENTARY TEAM ON EUROSPORT

Two of France’s great rally heroes will join forces to give their expert views on the IRC action on this weekend’s Belgium Ypres Rally. Jean-Luc Thérier and Jean-Pierre Nicolas will share the microphone and bring French-speaking fans a whole new perspective on what promises to be an extremely competitive event.
Thérier has the distinction of being the driver who scored the most points in the inaugural World Rally Championship, back in 1973. Sadly his achievement went unrewarded as the series was for manufacturers only until 1977! Synonymous with the successes of Alpine-Renault in the 1970s, he is an icon of the sport around the world.
Meanwhile Nicolas, teammate to Thérier in the 1973 season and the 1980 Monte Carlo Rally winner, will also bring his enormous expertise to bear on the coverage. "I’m really looking forward to teaming up with Jean-Luc again," Nicolas said. "The IRC is our kind of series and Ypres is always afantastic event for the competitors and spectators – I can’t wait to get started."
RALLY JAPAN TO MAKE IRC DEBUT IN 2010
Rally Japan is expected to make its inaugural debut on the IRC calendar in 2010, following discussions with the local organisers to create a permanent IRC event in this country from next season onwards. Japan was due to have been the 11th round of this year’s IRC series from October 22-24, but instead the Rally Hokkaido, a round of the Japanese Rally Championship from July 11-12, will form part of the IRC Supporter Events programme.

WTCC: ROUTE TO: BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC

ROUTE TO: BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC
The 11h and 12h rounds of the FIA WTCC will take place next week in the Czech Republic, at Brno’s Masaryk Circuit.
This is a traditional meeting for the championship, as Brno hosted the European Touring Car Championship from 2002 to 2004, and then the World Touring Car Championship from 2006.
BMW notched up eight victories out of the twelve races; only Alfa Romeo (Fabrizio Giovanardi’s double win in 2002), Chevrolet (Robert Huff won Race 2 in 2006) and SEAT last year have managed to break the German cars‘ supremacy.
The 2008 meeting saw BMW Team Italy-Spain’s Alessandro Zanardi claiming pole position and dominating the first race from lights to flag. The second race was one of the most exciting ever in WTCC; Gabriele Tarquini was able to resist Zanardì’s attempt to achieve double victory by a very narrow margin at the wheel of his SEAT León TDI.
Their breathtaking fight was one of the highlights of WTCC’s past season.

24 HOURS FOR MONTEIRO AND CORONEL
Tiago Monteiro and Tom Coronel face a busy weekend as they will take part in the Le Mans 24 Hours.
Monteiro will share an Oreca 01 AIM prototype with Brazilian youngster Bruno Senna and Stéphane Ortelli from Monaco; the car, run by the Team Oreca Matmut AIM, competes in the top LMP1 category against the likes of Audi, Peugeot and Aston Martin.
Immediately before heading to Le Mans the team spent three days of testing at the Paul Ricard circuit: "It was useful to gain confidence. Driving at 300 kmh at night is not easy and requires specific practice. It is demanding but gives you a unique feeling. We know we won’t be on par with the diesel cars and our aim is to take the chequered flag with both cars. It is a realistic aim on my come back to Le Mans," Monteiro commented.
Coronel will compete for the LMGT2 category at the wheel of a Spyker C8 car run by the Snoras Spyker Squadron. His team mates will be his fellow Dutchman Jeroen Bleekemolen and Járek Jánis from the Czech Republic.
During the current season Coronel has already raced the Spyker at the Spa 1000 Km where he and Peter Dumbreck achieved a brilliant fourth position in the LMGT2 class.
After Thursday’s last qualifying sessions, the Oreca 01 of Monteiro-Senna-Ortelli achieved the 15th position on the starting grid, while Coronel-Bleekemolen-Jánis placed their Spyker 11th in class.

Gleich zwei Autos hatte Duwo-Racing beim 12 Stunden Rennen in Spa eingeschrieben.

Formel 3 Euro Serie will beim Masters weiße Weste behalten

Streckenlänge: 4,307 Kilometer
Rundenrekord: 1:33,203 Minuten / Eric Salignon (2004)
Distanz: 25 Runden
Sieger 2008: Jules Bianchi

Brawn GP Formula One Team: Turkish Grand Prix

Jenson Dominates Turkish Grand Prix

After taking the lead on the first lap, Jenson dominated the Turkish Grand Prix and drove a superb race to bring his Brawn-Mercedes car home for his sixth victory of the 2009 Formula One season.
"I wish I could have had the whole team up there on the podium with me today" Jenson said. "This was definitely a victory for us all, everyone at the track, in Brackley and at Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth. Today we really showed what this car and engine can do and to beat our closest competitors fair and square is a great feeling. This is the first time that the car has been absolutely perfect for me and it means so much to the team to see just how good this car is."
Rubens had a more eventful race with the damage caused to his gearbox by clutch problems at the start leading to the team’s first retirement of the season. Rubens commented, "It’s difficult to have a day like this when you could see the pace of the car was fantastic but we will bounce back. Silverstone is one of my favourite circuits so I’ll stay positive and look ahead to the British Grand Prix in two weeks time."
Ross Brawn confessed that he was beginning to run out of superlatives to describe the team’s start to the season. "Once again, the team here at the track, in Brackley and our close partners at Mercedes-Benz worked extremely hard this weekend to improve the car. My sincere thanks to them all for their commitment and enthusiasm. We can now look ahead to Silverstone, just eight miles from our factory in Brackley, and take great pride to be leading the Constructors‘ and Drivers‘ Championships going into our home race."

“We are ready to deliver our second season”

With less than a month to go before the Superleague Formula show is back on track, the scene is set for an even more enthralling season of high-speed sporting action and intrigue. Alex Andreu, Superleague Formula President, answers questions about overcoming the global recession, the growing appeal of his championship and changes planned for the forthcoming season which features even more clubs and star drivers.
What impact have the current global economic conditions had on your plans for Superleague Formula?
“We have to bear in mind that SF has reached an important level of awareness and positioning with only six rounds in its first year. This is our main asset and all we have to do is to continue delivering a very good spectacle and product. This is what people want. We have a full grid in 2009 plus a star-studded driver line-up now including the reigning GP2 champion Giorgio Pantano.

AlexSF040609FotoJorgeAndreu_mockup

“As we know the global economic climate has changed considerably over the past six months and, like so many others, we’ve had to revisit our financial plans. Internally we have revised our shareholding structure to secure our financial future for both 2009 and 2010 but there will be no changes to the way that the series is run aside from substantial reductions in our overheads and operational expenses to reflect the economic changes. We are very conscious of the current situation and we are adapting to it. However, we have received a significant endorsement and support from race teams, circuits, suppliers, TV networks, etc. and this is not only helping us immensely to deliver 2009 season with very acceptable standards but encourages us to continue developing SF to reach the level and quality that everybody is expecting. Preparations are nearing completion and, with three new venues on the calendar plus three new clubs on the grid, I’m predicting even more drama and entertainment in 2009.”
How happy are you with the six event 2009 Superleague Formula calendar?
“I’m very pleased both with the schedule and with the huge change in the attitude circuits are displaying towards Superleague. Twelve months ago we were having a fight just to hold our races at certain venues and in just six races we have turned that around. As a result we are now being offered money to bring Superleague to circuits. Formula 1 is pricing itself out of Europe and organisers are seeking realistic alternatives. Magny-Cours, for example, has given us its traditional Formula 1 date at the end of this month.”
The Superleague Formula grid includes clubs from South America, the Middle East and Asia, are you looking to expand the series into those markets?
“Yes, our business plan has always taken us outside Europe… but only when the right financial conditions exist. We were offered a chance to race in Marrakech this year and have promoters in both Brazil and China knocking on our door. They are coming to us because they know we have a spectacular event with famous brands, great value and real passion which, at the end of the day, is what people want. Also we have had approaches from various cities interested in holding street races and we are exploring these possibilities that will take the racing to the people as well as a potential race in the US where soccer is a growing sport. We are broadening our horizons, in other words.”
Are you expecting more football clubs to join the existing Superleague Formula grid in 2009 and beyond?
“We have recently announced the addition of Olympique Lyonnais, FC Midtjylland and Sporting Clube de Portugal – all three are significant additions to our 2008 portfolio. Olympique Lyonnais is our first French club and, adding to the excitement, it will make its race debut on home soil at Magny-Cours. FC Midtjylland is not only our first Danish club but also the first from Scandinavia – an area that has a rich tradition in both football and motor sport. Lining up alongside FC Porto, Sporting is our second club from Portugal and that’s significant as Estoril was one of our best venues in 2008. Though, in the light of the current economic situation, we are looking to consolidate our business in 2009, we are also in negotiations with other football clubs around the world that clearly are impressed with our championship concept and keen to join the series.”
Will there be any technical changes to the cars in 2009?
“Our engine partner, MCT, has produced an upgraded version of the V12 SF engine that powers all our technically identical single-seater race cars and thus provides us with a level playing pitch. This year it will produce slightly more power and provide even more reliability. I’m pleased to report the revised engine was successfully tested recently at Magny-Cours and will be available for all our teams in good time for the opening race in France.”
Are all your race teams and drivers confirmed for 2009?
“I believe most of the teams and drivers are confirmed though not all have announced their plans yet. It’s already clear, though, that Superleague is now attracting an even higher caliber of driver. Last year’s grid featured former F1 drivers such as Antonio Pizzonia and many established single seater stars including Tristan Gommendy and Adrian Valles. This year’s line up is even more impressive with the addition of reigning GP2 champion Giorgio Pantano and more ex-F1 drivers such as Enrico Bernoldi. Moreover Superleague’s status is also attracting the next generation of top drivers: future stars such as John Martin and Pedro Petiz. I’m sure you will agree, it’s a great mix of youth and experience.”
What changes will you be making to the race format in 2009?
“For starters we will continue to work with many of the most respected names in motor sport including MCT, Elan Motorsports Technologies, Michelin and Hewland to deliver the very best on-track action. We will be announcing one exciting change to our race day programme but are sticking to the hugely successful reverse grid format used for the second race in 2008. It produced some really exciting racing and helped 13 of the 18 competing teams to reach the top three podium. In fact, no fewer than eight soccer clubs (AC Milan, Al-Ain, Beijing Guoan FC, BVB Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool FC, FC Porto, PSV Eindhoven and Sevilla FC) all experienced race victories during a dramatic inaugural campaign before Chinese club Beijing Guoan finally was crowned as the first Superleague Formula champions. This needs to happen to keep the fans entertained, so we will be sticking to the same concept in 2009. Commitment from our investors is underwr iting a total prize fund of $2m which remains one of the largest on offer in motor sport with a prize fund of $333,000 at each event.”
Can you confirm which television networks will be screening Superleague Formula races in 2009?
“Our main target is to establish live broadcast agreements with national terrestrial broadcasters in those countries where either we have competing football clubs or races on the calendar. This route will provide us with the widest possible audience and thus meet the commercial expectations of our partners. We are also experiencing an increased demand for high quality digital sporting products and this isn’t just limited to those countries with direct Superleague links. The series has awakened interest in places such as Japan, Australia and eastern European markets. On top of this we finalising contracts with international broadcasters and production companies for our Newsfeed to be included in sports magazine programmes for worldwide distribution.”
What other new developments are in the pipeline?
“We are always looking at new initiatives to recruit and excite new fans. For example, we are working on a state-of-the-art computer game that could be ready later this year and we have also introduced our own official pages on Facebook and YouTube.”

Kasper Andersen designs the livery for the FCM Car

Kasper Andersen designs the livery for the FCM Car

Superleague Formula racer Kasper Andersen is a man of many talents. The promising 24-year-old Dane not only is competing for his local FC Midtjylland club in this year’s championship, but he has also designed the livery that will adorn the club’s V12-powered single-seater race car when the club makes its SF debut at Magny-Cours in France later this month.

“I’ve raced lots of cars but this one is definitely going to be the most special. It’s a great honour for me to be representing FC Midtjyland in Superleague Formula and even more exciting as I’ve been given the chance to design the car’s racing colours,” said Andersen who warmed up for the forthcoming Superleague Formula season in spectacular style by winning a Formula Master race recently at Valencia in Spain.

“As all the Superleague cars are identical in terms of their design and technology, it was important to create a livery that both stands out from the pack and is easily identifiable to those FC Midtjylland fans following the on-track action,” continued Andersen. “Luckily I love working with the clever design software on my computer and the club’s black and red colours are very distinctive – they lend themselves to the racing car’s sleek bodywork. I’m very pleased with the results and I hope the fans will like what they see.”
FC Midtjyland President Bo Olesen is certainly impressed. He enthused: “Our racing colours look great. What’s more the crowd gave Kasper’s artwork a big ‘thumbs-up’ when we unveiled the car before a recent home match. Now we are hoping it goes as fast as it looks! We may be a small club but we have big ambitions.”

Superleague Formula
Superleague Formula is the fusion of the two of the world’s most popular sports – capturing the passion of football with the thrill and excitement of motor racing. The new concept features a field of evenly matched V12-powered, 750 horsepower single seater racecars bearing the colours of the world’s leading football teams. Traditional rivals on the pitch are doing battle at some of the world’s greatest racetracks. The series kicked off in 2008 with 12 ‘double-header’ races staged at six of Europe’s premier venues. Underlining the competitive nature of Superleague Formula, no fewer than eight soccer clubs (AC Milan, Al-Ain, Beijing Guoan FC, BVB Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool FC, FC Porto, PSV Eindhoven and Sevilla FC) experienced race victories during what was a dramatic inaugural campaign. Building on this success, an expanded grid will contest the 2009 championship, which starts at Magny-Cours in France on 27/28 June.

2009 MotoGP – Catalunya Preview

Lorenzo and Rossi ready for Catalonian challenge

Montmelo track

Montmel track

The Fiat Yamaha Team moves to Spain for the Grand Prix of Catalunya this week and after Valentino Rossi’s home race in Italy last time out it is now Jorge Lorenzo’s turn in the spotlight as the local hero. After a thrilling race in Mugello the pair now lie second and third in the championship and another exciting spectacle beckons this weekend at the high-speed Montmel track.
Mallorcan-born Lorenzo lived in Barcelona for much of his early career and after a brief hiatus in London last year he has now returned to live in his beloved home city. Following two wins and a brilliant second in Mugello the 22-year-old lies just four points off Casey Stoner in the championship standings and after disappointment on his last visit to Spain earlier this season he is determined to reach the podium in front of his fans this time out. Last year he was forced to miss the Catalunya round through injury after a crash in practice but he has won there previously in 250s and knows that home success is something special in front of the passionate and knowledgeable Spanish fans.
Montmel has been a happy hunting ground for reigning World Champion Rossi in the past and he has no less than eight victories to his name there, but he has finished second for the past two years and would like a return to the top step at what is one of his favourite tracks. Last year he made an impressive charge through the field from ninth on the grid to take the runner-up spot but he is keen to strike back with a win this weekend to add to his victory in Jerez a few races ago and claim back points on his team-mate, whom he trails in the standings by five points.
The Circuit de Catalunya is similar to Mugello in that it features one of the longest main straights in the world. The rest of the track is characterised by long radius, medium and high-speed sweeping corners, with two tight left-hand hairpins thrown into the mix. This variation combined with regular changes in camber makes the circuit particularly demanding on chassis balance and means that front-end feel is a key concern for every rider. After the limit on testing this season, the Monday after the race will allow the teams their first chance to test since before the first race and it promises to be a crucial day of development before the busiest stage of the season.
Jorge Lorenzo – "One of my favourite tracks"
"I’ve had a great season so far but it hasn’t all been perfect and I made a big mistake in Jerez when I tried to pass Stoner, so hopefully I can do better for my home fans this time! After Mugello and Le Mans we know that anything can happen and you just have to keep calm and focused. Now we’re going to my home, the closest place to my Island of Mallorca and one of my favourite tracks. I’ve always been fast there, right back to when I went there for the first time when I was in 125s and got my first second row start. My main aim this time is to have a better weekend than last year and to completely forget what happened. I improved on last year in Mugello so hopefully I can do the same again in Barcelona."
Valentino Rossi – "Hoping for a second Spanish win!"
"Mugello was disappointing but still we took some good points and now, entering one of the most important phases of the championship, this is very important. We still haven’t found the perfect answer to make my M1 exactly how I want but Barcelona is a good track for us so hopefully we can make the final step there, also since we will finally have a chance to test on Monday. Barcelona is, along with Mugello and Phillip Island, one of my favourite tracks and I always love racing there. I have taken one Spanish win so far this season so I am hoping for another this weekend. We need to keep focused and use what we learnt in Mugello to put us in the right shape. Finally I am hoping for good weather because I don’t think these flag-to-flag races in the wet and the dry suit me very well!"
Daniele Romagnoli – "Feeling very strong"
"Going to Barcelona, Jorge’s home race, lying second in the championship is absolutely brilliant and it gives us great motivation; we are feeling very strong right now after two good results in a row. This year the championship is very close and we need to be consistently on the podium in order to stay in touch. We’ve done very well in the last two races in the strange weather conditions but I think everyone would prefer a ’normal‘ race this time so let’s hope for some Spanish sunshine."
Davide Brivio – "Still on target"
"We’re still on target and close to the top of the championship but this weekend we need to try to gain some points on the two ahead of us in the championship. We have to work at our hardest this weekend. Usually we’re good in Barcelona but there are a lot of others who are also strong there and we know that it’s going to be a hard battle which we have to be involved in! On Monday we have our first test since the start of the season and it’s going to be a very important day which will hopefully give us some good information to help us over the second half of the championship."
